Thousands Of Feet Of Oil Containment Boom Stolen

May 12, 2010

Thousands of feet of oil containment boom has been stolen from Escambia County waters.

Yesterday, Lance Thayer,, an employee of First in Rescue Safety and Training of Deer Park, Texas, reported 3,400 feet of orange oil containment boom missing from the south end of the Bob Sikes Bridge on Pensacola Beach, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

The boom is valued at about $68,000, according to Thayer.

Thayer,  who has been contracted by BP  to assist in the oil clean up, said that more boom is missing from the Three Mile Bridge area also. Thayer told the Sheriff’s Office that it is not uncommon for boom to go missing and then the thieves try to resell it or lease it at another location.

The boom is owned by Eagle SWS Environmental Co. Thayer stated the company checked the surrounding waterways to see if the boom had broke loose but was unable to locate it.

People are so stupid! Do they think they won’t get caught trying to sell it? HELLO!? Your just some random idiot with a few thousand feet of boom! Plus, everyone already knows its missing! Wow, sometimes I wish we were all monkeys. There would still be really, REALLY stupid ones, but at least we could throw poop at them. Ha!

    Oh…. and J.R…..

    $68,000 for 3400 would equal *** $20 *** a foot… not $2.00… that seems pretty high to me…

Hahaha, Wondering….. not much use for it up here in Walnut Hill.

Cruised over to Lulu’s on the Intercoastal Waterway last weekend and saw boats pulling boom all up and down there… we also saw truckloads of new boom and volunteers pulling it out of the boxes and laying it in the water… we thought about offering to pull a few pieces for them but didn’t end up having time.

Man, as much of that stuff as we saw, I think I’d investigate whether the boom companies had anything to do with the well blowing up….

So this stuff is only costing $2.000 a foot? Clearly we can jack the price up a little higher than that.

Sad to say but some people actually make a living by stealing. I guess there is a market for just about anything. I agree that if they are arrested they should be out in the water restoring boom for a long time. They also need to help with clean-up. Somebody out there knows who these people are. TURN THEM IN.

PunkDope… it’s already out there on the water…. they just hook a rope on it and pull it away with a boat. Lots of inlets and places for them to take it, pull it up out of the water, fold it up and stick it in a small box truck. It’s not heavy….

The penalty should be 2 to 6 months of community service working to contain the oil. Get’em !!

How in the world can someone make off with that much boom? How would you transport that? I don’t reckon Jim Bob threw it in the back of his pickup….
