Florida Jobless Rate Falls For First Time In Four Years; Escambia, Santa Rosa Improve

May 22, 2010

For the first time in four years, Florida’s unemployment rate has declined, falling in April to 12 percent. That’s down from 12.3 percent in March. Alabama’s unemployment rate held steady at 11 percent.

Escambia County saw a dramatic dip in unemployment — down from 11.5 percent in March to 10.6 percent in April. That represents 1,309 unemployed people headed back to work in a month.

Santa Rosa County also recorded a nearly full percentage point drop in unemployment — falling from 10.3 percent in March to 9.4 in April. Santa Rosa County gained 612 jobs during the period.

The unemployment rate in Escambia County, Ala., dropped slightly from 12.6 percent to 12.2 percent — a gain of 48 jobs.

Coinciding with the unemployment drop, consumer confidence in April improved from the previous month, according to a University of Florida report. Nationally, unemployment inched up in April to 9.9 percent, up from 9.7 in March and 1.0 percentage point higher than April 2009.

Governor Charlie Crist signed Senate Bill 1736 this week, extending eligibility dates for the Extended Benefits (EB) program. The EB program provides unemployment compensation to job seekers who have exhausted all other available benefits and meet all requirements. This program utilizes federal stimulus funds provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and will bring an estimated $128 million in benefits to approximately 107,000 Floridians.

    ” . . . . Obama to snatch up to 75% of your income . . . . ”

Of course, he can’t pass any laws by himself, it requires the House and the Senate to pass the laws and the judiciary to support them.

Unlikely since voters tend to vote out people who vote for such thngs.

And if they did it, I would protest by working even less than I already do, if that is even possible.

It does not matter if that’s a private concern or governmental body of some sort. If you’re retired? So what; your gross will go up by the amount of insurance you get. ”

As soon as our government got involved in health care, they decided some had too much and had to cut back or pay more for it than they already were. Nobody who is not a Senator, President or Congressman should be allowed to have more than anybody else.

    I love our government.

    Most entertaining.

This is supposed to be part of the new Health Care Bill.

I contacted my Congressman about House bill HR3590 the health care bill
Just passed. I asked for a summary of changes.
The aid directed me to go to www: thomas.gov ; enter HR3590 in the search
    box and look for summaries.

Starting in 2011 (next year folks) your W 2 tax form sent by your employer will be increased to show the value of what ever health insurance you are given by the company. It does not matter if that’s a private concern or governmental body of some sort. If you’re retired? So what; your gross will go up by the amount of insurance you get.

You will be required to pay taxes on a large sum of money that you have
never seen. Take your tax form you just finished and see what $15,000 or $20,000 additional gross does to your tax debt. That’s what you’ll pay next year. For many it also puts you into a new higher bracket so it’s even worse.

This is how the government is going to buy insurance for the15% that don’t
have insurance and it’s only part of the tax increases.

Not believing this I researched the summaries and here’s what I’m reading:
On page 25 of 29: TITLE IX REVENUE PROVISIONS- SUBTITLE A: REVENUE OFFSET PROVISIONS-(sec. 9001, as modified by sec. 10901)
Sec.9002. “requires employers to include in the W-2 form of each employee
The aggregate cost of applicable employer sponsored group health coverage
that is excludable from the employees gross income.”

Joan Pryde is the senior tax editor for the Kiplinger letters. Go to Kiplingers and read about 13 tax changes that could affect you. Number 3 is what I just told you about.

Thank you President Obama, you are slowly undoing the damage caused by ex-President Bush and the republican party’s careless management of our country.

David sadly Washington politicians have turned into party gang wars. The few good ones are over shadowed by Republican vs Democrat gang wars while we the people just have to wait till the dust settles. More and more government control as resulted in less quality leadership of the country.
Where most of us grew up in a family that was diehard republican or democrat people have failed to see that parties do change from time to time on what they stand for. Merit and record don’t count for much, it’s which way is the wind blowing today.
We don’t have politicians that read laws or bill before passing them, they have become lazy and just go with the flow. What a novice idea that they could interpet illegal as illegal when it comes to people crossing our border. When They allow a president from Mexico to stand up in Washinton and critiicize the law in AZ and they stand up and apluade knowing that if you cross into mexico illegally you could face a firing squad.

“History has shown the the economy goes up and down in cycles. Nothing to do with who is in office, it’s just life”

Herbert Hoover wondered how he single handedly caused a world wide depression. People still curse Republicans for Hoover’s Depression.

Roosevelt supposedly got us out of the Great Depression, about ten years later and several years after other countries had gotten out, in fact so many noticed the coincidence of WWII that some hated to see the war end, thinking the war was the reason they were doing so well. What’s a few million deaths as long as you’re personally doing well?

It’s always interesting to see the proposal to cure all ills is to put more of life under governmental control, followed by recognition of how they mess up on their jobs, followed by proposals for even MORE governmental control.

David thinking it would be nice if we really did understand
how interconnected everything is, but frustrating too
unless politicians are at the center of all good things

Judy, I think so. History has shown the the economy goes up and down in cycles. Nothing to do with who is in office, it’s just life. But watch out, the way things are now we could have another labor pain at any time. Just think of the business that may go under from this and when they have no more use for those clean up crews.
