Fire, Chemical Spill At Masland Carpets

A Wednesday night fire at Masland Carpets in Atmore and a chemical spill were quickly contained.
The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m and was quickly extinguished by the Atmore Fire Department. A potentialĀ hazardous materials situation was turned over to Masland for cleanup.
Authorities said a mishap causedĀ powdered bleach and a dioxide to be mixed, and the combination spontaneously combusted.
The entire facility was evacuated during the incident. Workers were able to return to the building in about 45 minutes, and the overnight shift reported to work as normal.
There were no injuries reported.
The Atmore Fire Department, Poarch Creek Fire Department and the Atmore Police Department responded to the incident.

One worker was transported for chlorine inhalation and chemical exposure to the skin. Good job by masland getting him to medical help…but the only shower facility was located where the fire&chemical spill was. The worker should have been stripped and showered right away. Maybe they can installl another shower downstairs? Good job other wise
Everyone was back in the building in less than an hour, safe and sound,good work Loumeek White and Michael and all the guys who were hearding us up to make sure everyone was accounted for!!!!!
