One person was injured in a single vehicle rollover accident early Tuesday morning on Highway 97 just north of Gobbler Road in Walnut Hill.

The driver of a northbound Oldsmobile Intrigue apparently lost control, ran off the side of the road and overturned  about 12:45 a.m. The vehicle came to rest upright in the ditch.

The male driver was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital with what was believed to be non-life threatening injuries. There were no passengers in the car. The driver’s name and condition were not immediately available; the accident is still under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Atmore Ambulance also responded to the early morning accident.

Everyone is asking why there are so many wrecks on this stretch of highway. Well here’s my opinion. This is a long, boring, and, “lonely” stretch of highway, especially if you are traveling from 29 to the state line or vice versa. This makes it very easy to fall asleep especially if you are already tired and traveling late at night. I live up past Atmore and have frequently made trips to Pensacola to go bowling or see a movie or whatnot since there is nothing to do in Atmore!! I have traveled this road late at night on the way home and this is one LONG stretch of road if you are tired!!

Thank you, Lord for sparing another life on Hwy. 97. PLEASE, all of us that use that road , be careful. There seems to be multiple reasons that accidents keep happening but we have been lucky so far this year.

Not everyone has a day job, if so there would be no late night convenice stores, gro stores or even hospitals. Just saying, some people have no choice. Let’s not always assume the worse.

I have never in my whole life heard of this many rollovers on any road I’ve ever heard of. What is it about Hwy. 97? I have not heard or read of anyone who has voiced surprise at this. Rollovers are becoming more prevelant all over, but most seem to be on 97. Does anyone understand why this is?

You know what just bc the sun is not up don’t mean some people is not up for the ones that think drinking is done at night is WRONG…..weight before you speak not all about it first,,,This Man was coming from WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this man was on his way home from his job in Pensacola. He was not drinking, did not have a carload of friends in his car…he was simply coming home from work. And he is doing fine. Just learned a very good lesson, always wear your seatbelt.

i agree with ‘just a thought’…and even if he wasn’t working, what does it matter? we still have a LITTLE bit of freedom left in this world…and that’s being able to go when and where you please. ugh!

Been there – Some people don’t have the luxury of working 8-5 mon-fri and therefore have to travel at times you think they should be in bed.

Hwy 97 seems to be busy at night…or early in the AM I should say…keeps folks from getting a good nights sleep dont it…..he should have been home in bed…makes sense to me…does it to you ?
