Toddler Dies After Being Backed Over In Driveway

April 21, 2010

Authorities in Alabama are investigating the death of a toddler struck by a vehicle in a private driveway.

According to Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Grover Smith, his department responded Saturday to a report from the Atmore Police Department that an infant had been struck by sport utility vehicle backing out of the driveway of his Freemanville Drive home about 7:15 p.m.

The 18-month of child, Kemonte Williams, had been transported to Atmore Community Hospital by private vehicle and then transferred by LifeFlight to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile. Williams succumbed to his injuries Monday morning.

The Sheriff’s Office said there were other children in the yard at the time a family friend was backing out of the driveway. Williams reportedly walked behind the Ford Explorer. That male family friend and Williams’ mother transported the child to the hospital in same Explorer that hit him. The identity of the driver was not released.

The case is still under investigation by the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office and the Escambia County (Ala.) Department of Human Resources. No charges have been filed; deputies said it appears the incident was a tragic accident.

Freemanville drive is located just northwest of downtown Atmore, south of I-65.

This is such a horrifying tragedy, I am so sorry to hear of this baby being killed by being ran over. My thoughts and prayers are with this grieving family; it is true that accidents do happen in a split second. But it is also a fact that parents need to pay alot more attention to their children. I know the person that backed over this baby, did not intentionally do this and I know they probably just about can’t live with themselves knowing that they did this. God Bless you all, and littleone Rest In Peace. You are in Gods Hands…

As a parent that has lost a child, I know the pain that this family feels. May God bless you all and comfort you. There is no one to blame, accidents happen and God puts us all where we need to be when we need to be there. Only God knows why this little angel was selected so early. I pray that God comforts this family and their friends.

Oh how sad. God bless all involved! Accidents like this happen… The friend is probably going through a rough time, along with the family!

Before any of you start blaming parents and such, please think about the complete picture here. There were other children in the yard and the baby walked behind the explorer. It could have been any one of the children and could have been more than one if one of the other children ran after the baby.

I went to church with a gentleman that was going to bushhog his property and his son walked behind the tractor as he went to back up and the same thing happened. This man still hasn’t nor ever will forget that horrid day.

I pray this family and friend find comfort in this situation. May God be with all of you!
