A school bus driver and four students were injured when a heater or radiator hose failed on bus this morning in Oak Grove.

The bus driver was transported to Atmore Community Hospital to be treated for burns primarily to her legs. Four students received very minor burns and were evaluated by emergency personnel. The students were not transported to the hospital after the 8:45 a.m. accident.

hose11.jpgThe bus, number 18-06, was on North Highway 99 near Gobbler Road at the time of the incident. The bus driver was able to bring the bus to stop and call for help. An unknown number of Ernest Ward Middle School students were on the bus; the uninjured students were transported to school on another bus.

Students said when the hose burst, it sent hot antifreeze into the bus passenger compartment. The injured students were all near the front of the bus. Antifreeze could be seen running down the stairs of the bus and dripping onto the ground after the incident.

The parents of the injured students were all contacted by emergency personnel or Ernest Ward Principal Nancy Gindl-Perry. Perry arrived at the scene shortly after the accident, even loaning her shoes to one of the injured students.

Atmore Ambulance, the Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and  the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident. North Highway 99 was closed for about 30 minutes as victims were evaluated.

    REGARDING:
” I too wonder about the fire wall on the bus, was the hose in the engine compartment or was the hose inside the school bus under the dash?”

The same fluid which cools the engine flows into the inside of the bus to run the heaters and defrosters. There are valves which can shut off flow into the bus in warmer weather but you still need it to defog the windows when it gets too humid.

I don’t know the specifics since she wasn’t back on her bus this afternoon to grill. (bad when you’ve already been boiled and someone wants to grill you)

David for flawless hoses, valves and heaters

I think the safety of our kids is of the most importance possible and to design a vehicle that could potentially spray antifreeze on them is irresponsible and negligent. It doesn’t matter how many times it’s inspected, making sure that it is in good repair doesn’t negate the fact that it is designed so that in case of failure of this hose, ANTIFREEZE WILL SPRAY INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT SPRAYING OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR DRIVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have owned many vehicles and I’ve had a few heater hoses to burst. What I have never had is antifreeze spraying into the passenger compartment. Why would any vehicle be designed so that something like this could happen? It just doesn’t make any sense to me.
Thank God the driver and kids are ok.

I don’t have a clue about school busses. I too wonder about the fire wall on the bus, was the hose in the engine compartment or was the hose inside the school bus under the dash?

I’ve seen some burns from busted hoses and caps removed under pressure. They can be bad. Hope none os these were serious.

Sure hoping that everyone is doing alright, this is just aweful… prayers with you all involved.

In most vehicles, the radiator coolant circulates through a “heater hose” that runs from the engine to a “heater core” in the passenger compartment. It sounds as if one of these “heater hoses” burst and sprayed hot engine coolant into the passenger compartment.

I am one of the parents of an injured student, and yes i was called immediatly!
Thankfully my daughter had only minor injuries. So glad to hear Mrs.McCann is doing well.

Glad everyone’s going to be ok, but I’m confused on one issue. How did the antifreeze reach the passenger compartment? I’m picturing a wall or firewall between engine compartment and driver/passenger area. Did it come out of the system where the ventilation or A/C blows? (do they have A/C?) We’re in SR county and I think the buses are newer and more modern and my child tells me the bus doesn’t have A/C, but only has a fan that blows on the driver.

More importantly, I agree the driver did an excellent job maintaining composure and all who helped reacted well.

To Mary: did the school notify the parents of the kids on that bus?

    The article plainly states:

The parents of the injured students were all contacted by emergency personnel or Ernest Ward Principal Nancy Gindl-Perry. Perry arrived at the scene shortly after the accident, even loaning her shoes to one of the injured students.

  22. molinojim on April 15th, 2010 2:46 pm

You have to admire that even being burned she was able to stop safely and get help for the students and her self. I do not know the lady, but she sounds like the type of person we need more of. Hope she is as ok as she can be under the situation. Hope you get well soon.
