How Many Census Forms Have Been Returned In Your Community? We Have The Numbers

April 5, 2010

As of Friday, about 56 percent of Americans had taken part in the 2010 Census. But the mail participation level in most North Escambia area communities has been lower.

Below is breakdown of the percent of citizens taking part in the Census in the North Escambia area.

Area towns and cities:

  • City of Atmore: 50%
  • Town of Century: 48%
  • Town of Flomaton: 55%
  • Town of Jay: 55%
  • City of Pensacola: 53%

Area communities (not including the towns and cities above):

  • Atmore:  52%
  • Barrineau Park: 56%
  • Byrneville: 54%
  • Cantonment: 52%
  • Century: 54%
  • Cottage Hill: 54%
  • Flomaton : 55%
  • Gonzalez: 61%
  • Jay: 55%
  • McDavid: 55%
  • Molino: 55%
  • Walnut Hill: 56%

The mail participation rate is the percentage of forms mailed back by households that received them. The Census Bureau developed this new measure in 2010, in part because of the current economy and higher rates of vacant housing. The rate excludes households whose forms were returned to us by the U.S. Postal Service as “undeliverable,” strongly suggesting the house was vacant. According to the Census Bureau, there will be a followup on all forms returned as undeliverable to ensure everyone is counted.Source: U.S. Census Bureau

Water Improvement Project Improving A Decade Of Water Woes

April 5, 2010

Work is progressing on a Century water improvement project that will mean an end to the water woes of residents on Backwoods Roads that have waited a decade for help.

watertower10.jpg“It’s going real fast,” Century Mayor Freddie McCall said of the $1.58 million project that upgrades the town’s water system in the Backwoods Road, State Line Road, Highway 4A area.

The entire project includes a new half million gallon elevated water storage tank to improve system reliability and fire protection, two natural gas operated back-up generators to improve system reliability for the existing water treatment plants, 16,000 feet of six-inch water main and a booster station to provide fire protection, improve pressure and system reliability in a portion of the existing water system franchise area.

The bulk of the six-inch water main is installed and will soon be tied-in to the existing water system, McCall said.  Construction on the new elevated water storage tank at the intersection of Academy and Henry streets should be completed this week, and the tank will soon be painted.

The construction of the booster station is the last significant portion of the project remaining, the mayor said.

“There’s no time estimate yet on the booster station, but we are progressing,” he said.

With engineering fees, the project totals about $1.58 million. Of that, $1.39 million is from a federal stimulus grant awarded by the state; the balance is from a low interest loan.

Residents of Backwoods road have complained about poor water pressure and poor water quality for 10 years. They are currently served by just a two-inch water main.

Business Is Booming: Humane Society Store Expands Hours

April 5, 2010

Business has been good at the Junior Humane Society’s Thrift Store in Cantonment — so good, in fact, that they are expanding their hours.

Initially open just four days a week, hours have been expanded to include everyday except Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

jhsthrift.jpg“Some days when we came to open the store, we had customers already lined up and waiting for us,” said Frankie Van Horn Harris, director of the Junior Humane Society. “Hopefully, being open on more days and for longer hours will help our customers and help JHS.”

The store opened for business October 2009 after weeks of planning and hard work by a group of pet-minded and dedicated volunteers. Through the store, JHS volunteers have found a way to help the animals they care about so much and the community at the same time.

Store proceeds benefit JHS activities, such as finding homes for homeless cats and dogs. The store features of clothing for all ages, shoes, office furniture, kitchen supplies, books, toys, pet supplies and other items with new merchandise arriving almost daily.

Opening the store, as well as the store’s success, are a dream come true for Harris. “It’s something I didn’t think I would ever see in my lifetime, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do as a fundraiser,” she said.

The Junior Humane Society’s Thrift Store in Cantonment is located at the corner of Highway 29 and Neal Road in Cantonment.

Area Sunrise Services Celebrate Resurrection

April 4, 2010

sunrise10.jpg

Easter morning sunrise services were held at many locations in the North Escambia area Sunday morning.

Several Molino churches came together for a community Easter morning sunrise service at Aldersgate Methodist Church, celebrating with music and a message.

In Century, Abundant Life Assembly of God held a sunrise service in the park. In Flomaton, the Flomaton Ministerial Association held a sunrise service at the First United Methodist Church of Flomaton with several local churches in attendance.

In Atmore, a community Easter service was held at the First Presbyterian Church of Atmore; and in Cantonment, a sunrise service was held at St. Monica’s Episcopal Church.

The sunrise services celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, an important event to the faithful.

According to the Bible:

Matthew 28:1-20

Resurrection Morning
1 After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb. 2 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached [the tomb]. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his robe was as white as snow. 4 The guards were so shaken from fear of him that they became like dead men. 5

But the angel told the women, “Don’t be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here! For He has been resurrected, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell His disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead. In fact, He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there.’ Listen, I have told you.”

8 So, departing quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to tell His disciples the news. 9 Just then Jesus met them and said, “Good morning!” They came up, took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus told them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see Me there.”

The Soldiers Are Bribed to Lie
11 As they were on their way, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 After the priests had assembled with the elders and agreed on a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money 13 and told them, “Say this, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole Him while we were sleeping.’ 14 If this reaches the governor’s ears, we will deal with him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been spread among Jewish people to this day.

The Great Commission
16 The 11 disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped, but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
