A 78-year old Molino woman died after being hit by car in Molino Thursday night.

According to troopers, it was not known if Peterson was crossing the road or walking in the northbound lane when she was was struck by the right front of a 1998 Plymouth driven by Sheila Cashmore, 21, of Pensacola.

Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene by Escambia County EMS.

It is not suspected that Cashmore was under the influence of alcohol; she voluntarily submitted a blood sample to by analyzed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Charges are pending in the crash after the completion of the traffic homicide investigation, the FHP said.

According to Escambia County Property Appraiser records, Peterson owns a residence at 5370 Highway 95A — the area of the crash.

The accident is still under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call. LifeFlight was called to the scene, but it was canceled before landing.

How horrible! My heart is so heavy for everyone involved. What a tragedy that Mrs. Mamie Peterson was taken from her family this way. I pray that God will comfort the hearts of her family, friends and community. From the comments it appears that Mrs. Peterson was an outstanding woman and she will be greatly missed. How horrible for the driver, Sheila Cashmore also. Such a young girl that will have to live with this the rest of her life. What a horrible cross to bear. However, I do agree with “Kim”. That is why they call it accidents. May God comfort Sheila Cashmore and her family and friends also. She is certainly going through a lot right now and will have many rough days ahead of her. I can not fathom losing a family member or loved one so tragically, nor could I fathom walking in the drivers shoes. Only God will see both sides through this nightmare. Many prayers for all involved.

Accidents are always sudden, unexpected and tragic, of course it hurts from both sides, I lost a sister in 2006 from a careless driver, supposedly he was a police officer, I’m still hurting and grieving, now I (we) have lost another family member,.Mrs. Mamie Peterson was my late granddad’s (Willie Jones) sister, I didn’t grow up around her but she was one of the aunt’s and uncle I did know, I looked forward to seeing her every year in McKenzie, Al for revival at New Oak Grove Church, she was an outspoken christian for the Lord, sassy without saying, and loved to sing, we always expected her to speak and sing at revival, I hope she has a great homegoing CELEBRATION, NOT FUNERAL, because this is what she would have done for us, I hope all the family and friends reach their destination to Florida safely, stay in prayer because God always has the final word, it hurts, but we are anchored, in Jesus,we are a strong family, keep on praying,Aunt Mamie we ALL loved you, wish we would have said it more, I know you are sleeping until Jesus comes, You Florida residents need to get together and have something done about the highway before it happens to you, you could be the driver or the victim, do it now, no more senseless dying. Amen.

Mrs. Petterson, was my sister in law, I have known her all my life, when I was small my father would take my mother and sister and brother to Mamie house in pensacola every sunday, she would prepared sunday dinner and we would have a good time. even though Mamie was married to Mr. Petterson she was allway our sister in law. because she was such a good person, she never had a harsh word to say about anyone. It saddend my heart that she left this world so tragic, no one deserve to leave in such a manner, she will be soley missed, and for the young woman who cause this tragic, at 7:30 in the evening it is not dark, to the point that you cannot tell the different between and person or animal, she was standing by her mailbox, it does not matter how dark her clothes were, if you were paying attention to the road and the speed limit , you would be able to react in time. I have travel that road closed to the midnight hour, and the speed limit is 45 and I try to obey the limit, I have pass deer and other animal on the road and also people on bikes, but I am alert to the fact that this is a dark road, and if you do not pay attention, you could cause a mishap, I have heard all of what happen, only you know what you were doing, from the mark in the road you ran off the road. what were you doing? texting, talking on the phone or were you upset because you had to work. As I said only you and God know the reason, and the truth will come out one way or the other. For the Petterson family, My prayers are with you, We love Mamie and we will missed her beautiful smile, soft spoken words. May God hold and wipe away all your tears in time to come.

Its so horrible the way my Granny died. I just can’t register it right now people. I have a lot of memories of a strong black woman who loved the lord deeply with all of her Heart people. I have been reading all the comments and some are just hurtful to me and some are very sweet my family. We lost a sound minded woman, who could roll with best of them at her age and younger. My Grandmother was smart, savvy and yes sassy. Please people until you get the true facts be mindful of what you say.

  8. Dustin on April 19th, 2010 10:41 am

Sorry to hear that this had to happen to both parties. After reading the comments from others on this, I would like to say that assumptions of the driver speeding or reckless in any form is pointless. You never know the circumstances which led up to that accident. No one commenting is a police officer or expert. The fact is both families have a lot to deal with. Prayers go out to both parties involved.

First of all people, learn how to write and SPELL!

I think it’s sad that everyone is so quick to point fingers at the driver for doing something wrong. Yes, it’s a tragic event – but not at the fault of the driver. Have you ever been on that road at night time? You cannot see a single thing even if you have your head lights on bright. Don’t you think this poor girl feels bad enough and you have to go and call her a killer? Wow, grow up people. I am sorry for your loss but why try to ruin the life of someone else for something that was not her fault? If you want to blame anyone, blame the city for poor lighting. This could have happened to any of us.

I live at the end of 95 A on the North end…. 95 A is a VERY dark rd. I have OFTEN had to jerk my car over from people walking or pets near the road way. You cannot see them till you are up on them…… and the new halogen lights are horrible! When they are coming at you they blind you…. and my eyes are good.

This is tragic and my heart aches for both families involved.

  13. Me again on April 18th, 2010 1:22 am

To make matters worse, the Halogen lights that some are putting on their trucks and cars literally blind the oncoming drivers……………………Springfever

Thank God someone else hates those lights! I have complained to my doctors and they have all said that they haven’t heard anyone else complain. However, I know that for people who have migraines, they are dangerous because they cause a sudden harsh pain in the eyes and head. I hope that someone realizes this and bans those darned things. You can’t see a thing when they’re coming at you.

    M. Weaver: They did not release how fast she was driving, so you can’t say that if she was going 45, she would’ve been able to react properly. If you don’t see the person until you’ve already hit them, it doesn’t matter how fast you’re going, because you wouldn’t slow down at all if you didn’t see them first. Sure, if she were doing 45 AND SAW THE PERSON IN TIME, she would’ve been able to react. The report clearly indicates that the woman was wearing dark clothing and there were no street lights in the area.

Also, “enforced” is spelled with an E.

  20. Michael on April 16th, 2010 8:18 pm

I live on this road and have always said that there would be a number of bad accidents with the speed everyone travels on the road. If not the pizza drivers speeding, there are the city buses and trucks flying down the road.

The trucks speed at 4 and 5 in the morning and one day we’ll see one lose control and crash into someone’s house. I would love to have a movement to ban trucks on 95A and make them travel down Hwy. 29 only. The distance will be slightly longer, but the safety would be invaluable.

God bless this woman and her family. My deepest sympathies to her friends and loved ones.

FIRST , I AM VERY SORRY TO HEAR THIS TERRIBLE NEWS. SECOND , OUR PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE PETERSEN FAMILY. THIRD, THERE ARE STREET LIGHTS BY HER HOME , IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH AND NORTH OF HER HOME. THE PROBLEM IS PEOPLE DRIVING SO FAST! THE SPEED LIMIT IS *******45****** NOT 80! NOTHING IS BEING DONE TO SLOW THESE CARS DOWN . I CALL THE SHERRIFF’S OFFICE AND HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICE WEEKLY TO REPORT THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE NEARLY BEEN HIT JUST GOING TO MY MAILBOX!! THE SPEED LIMIT IS THERE FOR A REASON.IT MUST BE INFORCED OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. IF THIS CAR WAS DOING 45 , SHE WOULD HAVE HAD THE TIME TO REACT PROPERLY.

  22. Springfever on April 16th, 2010 6:48 pm

How tragic , My condolences to the Peterson family. My heart goes out to the young woman also. These awful scenarios will replay themselves over and over until the pedestrians realize that drivers cannot see them on a road without streetlights. I am certainly not blaming the victim here but it is hard enough for drivers to drive safely on a road w/little or no shoulders. To make matters worse, the Halogen lights that some are putting on their trucks and cars literally blind the oncoming drivers. Many times with the winding roads, a vehicle will have to drive near the edge of the pavement when coming around a curve just to make sure the oncoming traffic doesn’t hit them.. My prayers go out to all involved. May God comfort all of you during this difficult time..

    REGARDING:
“This is a tragedy. But people need to wear light colored clothing down these dark roads.”

I used to walk along the road at night wearing dark clothing. People would get right beside me and blow their horns. I thought they were trying to scare me. I finally realized they didn’t see me until they were right on me.

David for glow in the dark clothes

  24. Hudson Girl on April 16th, 2010 12:50 pm

Hwy 95 is a very dangerous road. It’s so dark that you can barely see your hand in front of your face at night. We need more streetlights on this stretch. My brother Donnie Hudson was killed unintentionally on 95A and Adams Road while riding his bike at night. That was almost 8 years ago. You can’t see anyone until you’re right on top of them and then it’s too late. My thoughts and prayers are with the Peterson family and also with the driver.

This is a tragedy. But people need to wear light colored clothing down these dark roads. The peole that live down that road know that road is dark as a tomb. They need more street lights there too. The speed limit is only 45mph for goodness sakes. That’s not the problem. People do need to stop walking down this road. And drivers do need to take more sufficient care for pedestrians.

All the traffic flys through this hwy from beginning to end and theres no room to walk ,with steep curves ,and high grass with snakes and glass and liter and other stuff with no respect for motorist…BEWARE!!!!! Since it’s right there at her house, I would have assumed that she was checking her mail.

    People,
PLEASE pay attention when you are driving in ANY area at night. There aren’t going to be flashing lights on people that say “Hey, I’m here!”
Unfortunately, there is a lot of speeding through here and a lot of careless driving. I’m not saying that was the cause of this accident, just pointing out the truth of this roadway. We ALL need to be more careful, whether walking or driving.
