What Are The Odds That You’ll Hit A Deer? Probably Higher Than You Think

Odds are, you or someone you know in North Escambia has hit a deer. If not, odds are you won’t have to wait long for that to change — maybe even on your next trip out to the store. In fact, a vehicle-deer collision happens every 26 seconds in the U.S.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, deer-vehicle collisions in the U.S. cause more than 150 fatalities each year. Last year, one North Escambia resident died after he hit a deer while on his motorcycle. Tad Fredrick Cann, 46, of Walnut Hill struck the deer about daybreak on February 9, 2009, near the intersection of Molino Road and Sunshine Hill Road.
In addition to actual collisions with deer, many North Escambia area accidents are attributed to drivers attempting to avoid deer.
The number of vehicles on U.S. roadways has grown by seven percent over the last five years. But the number of times those vehicles have collided with deer has swelled by much more than that.
Using its claims data, auto insurer State Farm estimates 2.4 million collisions between deer and vehicles occurred in the U.S. during the two-year period between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2009. That’s 100,000 per month.
The most likely state in which to hit a deer? West Virginia with a 1 in 39 chance. The least likely? Hawaii. Just 1 in 9,931 — about the chance of randomly picking one piece of clover that turns out to have four leaves.
The likelihood of colliding with a deer in Florida during the next year is 1 in 1,147 across the state. But in the North Escambia area, our chances are much more like those in Alabama — about 1 in 205. Deer-vehicle crashes were up 38 percent in the last five years in Florida and up 16 percent in Alabama during the same period.
The average property damage cost of these incidents was $3,050, up 3.4 percent from a year ago, according to State Farm.

Changes In Escambia’s Search For New County Administrator

There have been changes in Escambia County’s road to selecting a new county administrator.
Most notably, the job will now be advertised as a three-year position instead of the one year contract that has been offered by the Escambia County Commission. The commission has voted to spend an extra $3,000 to extend the application process through the end of the April; the selection process was due to be completed by the first of April.
About 50 people have applied for the county administrator job, while the current Interim County Administrator Larry Newsom has withdrawn his name from the candidate list. He will return to his division manager job when a new top county boss is hired.
Area Residents Among 10,000+ In St. Patrick’s Day Run

A record 10,600 runners took part in the 33rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day 5k Run Saturday, including many from the North Escambia area.
Matt Dobson of Jay placed first in the Male Masters 5K Speed Awards and seventh overall.

Northview Splits Doubleheader With PHS
March 14, 2010
Northview split a doubleheader with Pensacola High School on Saturday.
The Chiefs took the first game 13-1, while Pensacola High took game two 9-2.

In the first game, Dabney Langhorne was 4-4 with a run and an RBI. Heath Burkett was 2-3 with two runs. Austin Reid went 2-3 with a couple of runs scored. Brad Lowery was 1-3 with with an RBI. Taylor Martin was 1-3 with a double, and Austin Arrington was 1-2 wit two runs scored and an RBI. Pitcher Heath Burkett pitched five, allowing one run, three hits and striking out four.
Pensacola High 9 Northview 2
In the second game, Taylor Martin and Brandon Sheets were both 1-3 with a run scored. Brad Lowery was 1-3 win an RBI. Austin Arrington pitched three, allowing seven runs, six hits and striking out zero.
Deadline To Help Haiti With Buckets Of Hope Program
March 14, 2010
You have through the weekend if you would like to join area churches in helping Haiti with the Buckets of Hope program — an earthquake relief effort that is providing hope to the families of Haiti one 5-gallon bucket of food at a time.
As of late last week, over 1,100 buckets had been collected, according to Drayton Smith, associate pastor at the First Baptist Church of Cantonment. The buckets contain specific food items, including beans, rice, sugar, flour, cooking oil and other essentials. It’s enough to feed a family of four for about a week, plus they have the bucket to reuse to haul water, store food items or even move rubble in the earthquake stricken land.
The First Baptist Church of Bratt is serving as a collection point for the north end of Escambia County, according to FBC Bratt Student Pastor Tim Hawsey. In the Cantonment and central portions of Escambia County, the buckets are still be collected by the First Baptist Church of Cantonment.
The deadline to drop off the filled buckets at the First Baptist Church of Bratt is Sunday, March 14. More information is available from through the student ministry of the church.

Flood Warning For Escambia River
March 14, 2010
The Flood Warning continues for the Escambia River near Century from Monday morning until Wednesday evening.
Early Sunday, the stage was 16.4 feet. No flooding was occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
The flood stage is 17 feet. The Escambia River is forecast to rise above flood stage by Monday morning and continue to rise to near 17.2 feet by early Tuesday morning. The river will fall below flood stage by Wednesday early afternoon. At 17 feet, considerable flooding of lowlands will occur.
Council On Aging Caregiver Support Meeting Thursday
March 14, 2010
Council on Aging of West Florida will host a Century Caregiver Support Group Meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m.
There is no cost and the public is invited. Reservations are not required. The meeting will be held at Century Care Center at 6020 Industrial Blvd. The group meets on the third Thursday of each month at the same time and location. County residency is not required to attend.
The support group is part of Council on Aging of West Florida programs designed to reduce stress, increase coping skills, provide strategies for effective management of care giving tasks and enable caregivers to provide high quality care in the home. The programs are sponsored by Council on Aging of West Florida, the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Northwest Florida Area Agency on Aging. For more information, call 432-1475.

Stop Crape Murder: Don’t Cut Back Your Myrtles

Crape myrtles are a favorite tree along the Gulf Coast. It seems that every yard has at least one tree and landscapers frequently rely on these flowering trees for street plantings and commercial properties. Crape myrtles are low maintenance plants that reward us with colorful flowers throughout the summer months.
Flowers are not the only virtue of this tree. Many varieties have beautiful bark and growth habits that can be enjoyed all year if trees are not heavily pruned.
Unfortunately, many crape myrtles receive unnecessary pruning every winter in the form of topping or hat-racking. The practice of topping trees is so common that many people believe it to be needed in order for the tree to flower heavily. This is not always true.
Crape myrtles bloom on new growth which will occur without any pruning. Trees will continue to flower without topping and we all can then enjoy the natural shape and shade that the trees provide. Less pruning also saves the need to dispose of all the trimmings and may reduce your need for pesticides to manage unsightly powdery mildew or sooty mold. If you are pruning because your tree is too large for it’s spot, consider removing it and planting a tree or shrub that fits that spot.
There is a crape myrtle for any spot. Crape myrtles cultivars range in size from 1 foot to over 20 feet tall. Shop carefully so that you purchase a suitable plant for your landscape. The publication Crape Myrtle in Florida will help in your selection process.

Red Flag Warning Today

The National Weather Service in Mobile has issued a red flag warning for this afternoon.
Breezy and dry westerly winds have allowed for relative humidities to drop below critical levels over the northwest Florida Panhandle. A red flag warning has been issued for the northwest Florida Panhandle for relative humidities at or slightly below 35 percent combined with breezy westerly winds of 15 to 20 mph.
Precautionary/preparedness actions…
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now…or will shortly. A combination of strong winds…low relative humidity…and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.
Hay Trailer Fire Slows Traffic
March 13, 2010
A hay trailer fire delayed traffic on Highway 97 for a short time Saturday morning in Molino.
The Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and the Florida Division of Forestry responded to the burning hay and resulting small grass fire about 11 Saturday morning. The trailer was on Pilgrim Trail, just a few feet off of Highway 97. The was minor damage to the trailer, and there were no injuries.
Once firefighters extinguished the majority of the fire in the large rolls of hay using water, they were required to use rakes to pull smoldering hay off the trailer to finish their job.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic.
