Over 150 Cats Seized From Man’s Home; Nine Dead Cats In Freezer

March 28, 2010

A Pensacola man is facing multiple counts of animal cruelty after deputies and animal control officers seized over 100 cats from his home.

Larry Kruger, 61, is being held in the Escambia County Jail on $41,000 bond after the animals were seized from his home on Bet Mark Road, just north of 10 Mile Road.

There were eight dead cats found in Kruger’s freezer, and most of the more 161 cats seized Saturday will likely be euthanized because they are sick.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Department said Kruger may face additional charges as their investigation continues.

Lady in Fl said… “what do y’all think I should do about at least 10-15 stray”

You may want to call animal control and see if the will bring out some traps and catch them. Or buy a have a heart a trap yourself, catch them and call them to come out and pick them up.

    Lady in Florida,

You might try asking the vets in the area.

what do y’all think I should do about at least 10-15 stray WILD kitties that come out of the woods by my property at night and crap all over the yard, mate, etc?? I live out in the country in Walnut Hill. I hate to shoot them but that may be my next move. I know the animal shelter prob. won’t come get them, or even be able to as they are wild and run at the first sight of a human. I could not even have a pet cat of my own because of all these wild critters, and I am a very responsible pet owner who spays/neuters my pets and give them medical care and immunizations! does anyone know of an agency that could help with this matter? Thanks

To Jim, (Bellville, IL): Tell your brother to get a DOG! Cat problem solved.
Cat’s reproduce at a very fast rate. If you don’t take care of the problem when a “stray” first shows up in your yard, you’ll be regretting it.
My 60 pound dog keeps the local cats out of our yard.

Animal control in Escambia County Florida….what a joke!!! By brothers’ neighbor has more than 10 stray’s (cats) that do nothing more than come in his yard and mess it up…He say’s you cannot stand the smell outside in his-own back yard. He has spoken to his neighbor about it, but they do not want to see the cats euthanized, and the Escambia will not come out and caught the animals. They will take them if you trap them, but they will not expend funds to what is perhaps an environmental and health issue in a neighborhood until it gets to a situation like the one in this article. You can not do any harm to the animals…but the health and welfare of the people paying taxes in the area are secondary.

  12. Vote Judge Ackerman out... on March 29th, 2010 7:49 am

Those of you who are dissatisfied with Judge Ackerman’s performance will have the opportunity to send him that message this November in the election booth.

The 170 cats seized from Kruger’s house were euthanized at the shelter. The cats were so emaciated and sick and will suffer no longer now. Hoarding is a serious mental condition and Kruger will need intensive, long term treatment. These cats were living in a hell hole and numerous attempts over the years by Animal Control to enforce the cruelty laws were railroaded by JUDGE DAVID ACKERMAN.

KUDOS to Escambia Co. Sheriff’s Dept for stepping in and ARRESTING Kruger on numerous Animal Cruelty Charges….CRIMINAL charges..

Does anyone know why so many folks are spelling NONE ………NOONE. I see it over and over in here, and not from just one person. I really want to know. Is this a new spelling of a word that means “not any?”

    NONE = NOT ANY

    NOONE = ????????????????

“Our legal system is badly broken. Judges hand out light sentences thinking they are “helping” individuals like this but in reality the judge only makes the matter worse. Judges need to have a better understanding of mental illness. People who are suffer from OCD, and hoarders can not be fixed overnight. It takes time, often lots of time and therapy. I hope this man gets the help he needs as placing him in jail will only exacerbate his condition and probably trigger a mental break from the increase in his anxiety. I hope this goes well for him.”

You doubt the judges ability, but you are able to diagnose and recommend a fix from this brief article?

this poor man noone seemed to want to help him they just thought of the animals. that is probably why he loves his cats so much they didnt try to be cruel to him they just loved him as he loved them. people worry about the cats health what about the mans health? As far as judge ackerman its sad that he probably was one of the few that understood the man had a problem and has been doing a job seeing scum be let go on crimes against humans for how long? and maybe when he did sentence him in his mind maybe he thought he would get better or maybe someone would also try to help this man. this man is guilty of loving his animals and being sick hiself and we are guilty for not caring for another human to try to help them understand that loving a few cats are better than loving a hundred and for not helping him get control over his cat issue.

Seems kind of heavy duty when you realize that the Marine who strangled his gf/s dog is out walking around…
I think the Marine is a lot more dangerous. And not because he’s a Marine..

I would like to hear as Paul Harvey use to say “the rest of the story”. My mother would feed any stray that came up and as Frank said they multiplied. Plus I think they invited their friends over also for a hand out. If the fellow has mental problems (and it sounds as if he does) I hope the court system or family/friends can get him help. Maybe Lakeview Center could help.

  19. anydaynow on March 28th, 2010 10:56 am

Cassandra-yes, behavior such as this is caused by a specific mental health disorder that these people have through no fault of their own.

old man say i like cat it taste like chickin.

  21. JUDY MASEK on March 28th, 2010 10:40 am

i tend to think that this man has some underlying mental illness issues and that that aspect should have been ruled-out before the judge set such a high bond…unless it was obvious (from the scene) that he was breeding/keeping them there with some sort of ill intention.

Casandra, you are right on with your remarks. Frank, there is help out there for people who can’t afford to have their pets spayed or nuetered. Please follow Rowdy’s advice.

  24. Rowdy on March 28th, 2010 8:46 am

And I’d like to know why something wasn’t done about this guy YEARS ago. His “problem” with animals goes back to 1995. Perhaps Judge Ackerman can explain why he went soft on him at least Twice. Now guess who’s stuck with the bill… not to mention cats that will lose their lives.

  25. Rowdy on March 28th, 2010 8:45 am

Frank…. please contack Jury-Duty.org and see if they can help… or contact the Junior Humane Society. There’s got to be a way to keep this from getting worse…

  26. rollingwiththetide on March 28th, 2010 8:12 am

Why would any one in their right state of mine put dead cats in a freezer!?

  27. FRANK on March 28th, 2010 8:07 am

I had a stray come up that looked starved and fed her, then two weeks later she was 5. I did not have the heart to have her killed and could not afford to have her spayed now I have 12, and she has left me, the “old hussie”. Now I have 12 strays that need fixin’…The old hussy saw a sucker with a heart and shot an arrow through it. Now I will have to KILL 12 or 12 will be 50 incest kids running around, SO, mama’s left me with a broken heart and a yard full of kids.

  28. Casandra on March 28th, 2010 7:25 am

This poor man is probably a “hoarder” and mentally ill. I’d venture to guess that he has no business being in jail. Rather, he should be receiving proper medical care.

This is so sad. Those poor poor animals. This is why your suppose to FIX YOUR KITTY’S!!! If you can’t afford to then you shouldn’t have them.
