Man Charged With Stealing $2,000 In Alabama Hours Before He Was Robbed In Century

March 5, 2010

The 18-year old victim in a gunpoint robbery last week in Century is now facing charges in Alabama for stealing the money that was later stolen from him.

knightdavante.jpgDevante Aaaron Knight, 18,  of Hecker Road, Century, was arrested is being held in the Escambia County (Fla.) Jail awaiting extradition back to Escambia County (Ala.) to face larceny charges stemming from a purse snatching incident.

An Escambia County, Ala., warrant was issued Wednesday for Knight’s arrest after he allegedly snatched a purse containing $2,000 in cash from an 85-year old woman last week.

The day after the purse snatching, Knight was himself the victim of a robbery where the $2,000 was stolen.

Knight told  Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office deputies that he was in the yard of home in the 100 block of Zion Street talking to another Century man. That’s when the suspect asked to borrow a dollar from the Knight, and the Knight agreed. The suspect then reportedly walked into a trailer, returned outside and told the Knight “Give it up”.

deputycar10.jpgKnight said that he remembered being hit in the head with the gun and hearing gunfire, but he did not think he had been shot. The victim them walked to the nearby Dollar General store on nearby North Century Boulevard. That’s where Knight located his aunt. The aunt transported the Knight to his home in the 200 block of East Hecker Road and called 911. Knight was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment of a head injury.

The suspect was able to steal the entire $2,000 allegedly taken from the 85-year old woman.

According to the sheriff’s office incident report, Knight was treated for a laceration to his head that was not the result of being shot.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the suspect for aggravated battery using a deadly weapon and robbery with a firearm.

Sad when you can’t keep what you stole.

At least there’s plenty of 85 year-olds to prey upon.

David feeling sorry for robber/robbed, ignoring the horror the elderly lady may have faced

Stop with the comparisons. It’s really getting annoying. A crime was commited (a really stupid crime in which he will be prosecuted). But I’ve read news of crime occuring in Jay over the years just as I have Century. Each town has it’s issues that have to be resolved. I personally don’t live in south Central LA (and I don’t have a criminal background). Just as in every city/town across the country we have people who make stupid decisions. But I’m really tired of hearing about Jay. It was about ya’ll last week. Time to move on. Ok. Thanks.

I don’t live in Jay, but I have family there. Jay has always been relatively crime-free. I’ve heard of few, if any, robberies, rapes, burglaries, homicides (until this past weekend), or other serious crimes. Of course drugs are everywhere and I’m sure Jay has it’s share. Jay disbanded it’s one-man police department years ago and it is rare to see a sheriff’s deputy when you pass through there. None are needed. The people there usually stay to themselves for the most part, You rarely hear of people from Jay coming to your town and starting trouble. There may be a lot of “rednecks” that live there, but most are quiet hardworking people, many who farm for a living. Century, on the other hand, is one of the most crime-laden towns of it’s size anywhere. Just a quick glance over the headlines here on northescambia.com will prove that. Not sure what the difference is, but two towns of similar size, a few miles from one another. One is like Mayberry and the other is like South Central LA.

Why- Thanks for taking the worlds right out of my mouth.
N>H>F wants to call someone a low life to do that to someones mother. He is someones son. And Jay has no room to talk because the person that was shot in jay was a son of someones also, and has a mother.

    The article states:
That’s when the suspect asked to borrow a dollar from the Knight, and the Knight agreed.

Wow, royalty right here in our own neck of the woods. A modern day Robbin in the Hood.

As Forrest Gump would say, “Stupid is as Stupid does.” I was wondering where an eighteen year old from around here would even get $2,000 to flash around, and now that’s been answered… He stole it from a defenseless old lady. What a piece of trash. On the flip side, who is the robber that took Knight’s stolen cash? If there is a warrant issued, surly there’s name to go along with it.

    I agree completely, Bill.

  20. bill, big b little ill on March 5th, 2010 1:25 am

The sad part to this story is the 85 year old lady. The rest of the story is down right funny. Now if they catch the other thief, maybe they can share the same jail cell.
