Missing Elderly Man Found Safe

February 14, 2010

clydecarrol10.jpg  An elderly Cantonment man has been found safe, about 21 hours after he was reported missing following a funeral in Alabama.

Escambia County (Ala.) Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said Clyde Rufus Carroll, 78, was located at about 10:30 this morning on Alger Road north of Butler Street in Escambia County, Alabama, about 20 miles from Wallace where he was last seen.

Lambert said Carroll had driven down a dirt road to an oil well just south of I-65. When he turned around, he ran the van he was driving into a ditch, nearly rolling the van onto it’s side, Lambert said said. Carroll was cold, but otherwise appeared to be in good condition. He was transported by ambulance to D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton to be evaluated.

Carroll volunteers for Faith Chapel Funeral Home in Cantonment. He was last seen about 1:30 p.m. Saturday at a funeral in Wallace, about 20 miles north of Flomaton. It appears that he took a wrong turn when he left the funeral in the Faith Chapel van.

Thank you Beverly, for sharing that.

You all cannot be blamed if you did not know of his medical condition. When my friend and I chatted with Mr. Carroll, he carried on a very intelligent conversation about relatives my friend and he might have in common. My friend was as shocked as I to learn he had dementia. I saw no sign of such when we spoke, and I am an RN (retired), have a dad and a friend who had Alzheimer’s, and have attended an Alzheimer’s support group for the past few years, and still do sometimes. I am glad he will still be there. He has a very kind manner, and seems so very peaceful. He made me feel at ease. My friend and I thought he was delightful. He still is, I am sure.

Our prayers were answered and we are “thankful” to all who particiapted in the search for Mr. Clyde. Mr. Clyde has been employed with Faith Chapel Funeral Home since April 2006 and not until Friday did we at Faith Chapel know he had any type of medical condition. We would never have placed him in the capacity of driving a vehicle on a funeral service had we have known of his medical condition. We would not have put him or any one else in danger of harming themselves or someone else. Mr. Clyde is the #1 Greeter on the front door, there is not hardly a person that comes through the doors he doesn’t know, and always greets them with a smile. He is always walking around with a smile on his face, never complains and always asking what he can do. He will have a job as long as he wants or as long as his health will allow him. We love having Mr. Clyde with us and he is definantly a part of the Faith Chapel Family.

He is a wonderful guy, but he is a lot tougher than you might think. He is a surviver and can hang with the best of ‘em….but thank God anyway!

    To Thinker,

I also carry a jacket and water everywhere I go now. Even in the spring. It was warm the day we went on the river. It sure wasn’t warm that night. It was on Mothers Day Eve, the year that plane went down in Escambia Bay when we went out on that boat, ran out of gas and broke the only paddle on the boat. We had to tie onto some willows just as darkness fell. Go prepared!

    Thank You, God.

Thank you prayer team and all others who prayed. Thank you North Escambia for posting the story, the picture and the updates. Thank you, Amber, Michelle and Jim. Thank you Deputy Lambert.

Poor Mr. Carroll. I am so sorry if you were cold. My family and I were stranded on the Escambia River many years ago, and shook like folks in seizure, all night long. If your muscles are sore, I pray God heals them quickly. But, perhaps He just kept you warm. I prayed he would, and then received an email from someone that prayed the same thing I did…. for you to be kept safe and warm. There two agreed, so…….

I just really, really thank God that you are home safely. I know your loved ones are keeping you warm.

Thank you Lord for taking care of Mr. Clyde. Thanks also to all the ones who looked for and found Mr. Clyde. GOD IS GOOD.

  14. FYI on February 14th, 2010 2:55 pm

I’m glad they found him and that he’s ok. I hope they don’t let him drive or go off by himself anymore though. It’s too dangerous and might not turn out as good the next time.

  15. Thinker on February 14th, 2010 1:46 pm

Mike Lambert is one of our best deputies. How did he ever find the guy?

This reminds me how I often, but not always, carry extra warm clothing in my car in the winter, on my longer trips. It’s a good thing to do. There are so many miles of wooded and seldom traveled roads, and an accident or break down can lead to a difficult survival situation.

Thank you so much NorthEscambia.com for posting Clyde’s photo and information on Saturday. If you had not, the persons that found him would have never known. He might still be out there.

You were the only news organization that we could find that cared enough to run the story. We are forever greatful that you helped bring our family back together.

I’m so glad you’re still with us!

  23. Steve on February 14th, 2010 11:40 am

Clyde is a great guy, one of the finest people I’ve ever met. I worked with him at Reynolds Hardware #2 and I don’t think I ever saw him in a bad mood… always a smile and a handshake or pat on the back. He knew EVERYBODY!

God bless ya Clyde, I hope your way home is safe.

A lot of folks read this site, please keep an eye out for Clyde. It’s cold outside. I’m sure law enforcement has a BOLO out on him, the guys on the north end probably all know Clyde from the funeral home.

A prayer request has been sent out to a prayer chain of many people, plus one more whose late husband shared this man;s name. I prayed that he would be safe and warm. A few mins. after I sent out the request, I received a response from my best friend who prayed exactly the same thing. I hope more will join us. I can’t believe there are no more commenters. I guess folks are all tried from sliding around in the snow and having snowball fights.

I hope that many have seen this call for help and are paying attention to the vehicles the and elderly men they see out and about.

May God grant His supernatural peace to his loved ones as they wait.

  37. EMD on February 13th, 2010 7:06 pm

Oh no. I have met and spoken with this man after a funeral a year or so ago. He seems like such a nice man. I sure pray he will be found, and in good condition. Please, everyone, keep your eyes open for him. Please don’t just read and forget about this.
