Two Century Correctional Officers Fired

February 1, 2010

Two Century Correctional Institution officers have been terminated for bringing forbidden items into the facility.

One correctional officer was terminated for bringing a Bic lighter to work for the second time, according to Gretl Plessinger, Department of Corrections spokesperson. Another, she said, was terminated for attempting to bring an MP3 player into the facility.

The lighter and MP3 player are among items not allowed on the CCI compound, Plessinger said. It was the second time the officer with the Bic lighter had attempted to bring one into the facility, she said.

Both corrections officers were still within their two year probationary period — the officer with the lighter was hired in late 2009, and the officer with the MP3 player was hired in late 2008.

Neither officer was charged with any crime.

The officers were on probationary status. They violated institutional rules. The violations were documented. If I’m not mistaken, during probationary status, employees can be terminated without cause. End of story.

i AM A OFFICER WHO HAS BEEN EMPLOYED AT CENTURY FOR THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS. i AGREE WE DO PUT OUR LIVES ON THE LINE, AND YES RULES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED, BUT THINGS ARE NOT FAIR AT CENTURY NEVER HAS BEEN. I BELIEVE THESE TWO OFFICERS FOUND THEM SELF CAUGHT UP IN RETALIATION DUE TO THE OTHER SITUATIONS THAT ARE GOING ON .I BELIEVE IF THE INMATES CAN GET CORRECTIVE PUNISHMENT THAN SO SHOULD WE. NO THEY SHOULD NOT GET A SLAP ON THE WRIST. BUT THERE IS PUNISHMENTS TO BE UTILISED BEFORE BEING FIRED. BECAUSE WE HAVE A WARDEN, ASSISTANT WARDEN, CAPTAINS AND ALL THEY WAY DOWN THE CHAIN OF COMAIN MAKING MAYJOR MISTAKES, AND ARE STILL EMPLOYED AT CENTURY I BELIEVE THEY WERE A TARGET. BUT i AM A FIRM BELIEVER WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND.

all of this is true but i do have to say this officer didnt mean for this to occur these sunglasses were sitting on top of his head he had laid them on there as we all do and just forgot about them he wasent trying 2 sneek anything in this i do know just due to the fact that this officer has never been in any sort of trouble with our great department before and just as many more have said and even a few that i may as well work with this was a fine officer who enjoyed his job and always done whatever was asked of him and done his job correct and carried himself in a correct form and was a good example for our department all i can wish is that the department will look and find more officers just like this officer we will miss him greatly thank you all have a wonderful day !!!

As the fiance of a correctional officer….. I sit and wait every night wondering if Im gonna get a call because hes been hurt or killed due to something an inmates freind or family member or WORSE another officer brought in or done!

Some of the things on the lists may sound trivial , but its proven when a human being is “locked up” they find things to do…… and the human is conditioned to be inventive. Its amazing what some of those inmates can come up with……wether it may be something to entertain themselves or worse something to do harm to other inmates or gaurds!

There are somethings that are mistakenly forgotten in ones pocket…….but there are always bad apples in ANY work place and they are gonna break rules either for simple defiant attitude or for monetary gain.

Only problem is in a “work place” such as this…… Rule Breaking can equal someones life!

I have two nephews that work there and they are not allowed guns. These are men that put their lives on the line everytime they go to work. They can’t share what they see and hear and have to carry that in their mind even when they are off duty. The language alone can drive a person crazy and I have another nephew that quit there because of the language and things he saw and to this day he has not told me any of it. Another nephew left there and is a guard somewhere else. So they need the rules to be followed because you never know when some inmate might do something stupid.

This is a response to most of the comments made. I am a former employee of the Department of Corrections, I worked there for almost 15 years and retired for medical reasons. The bic lighter is not allowed in the facility not just because it can start fires any lighter will do that and inmates do have lighters (cheap lighters). The mp3 player was affixed to a pair of sunglasses and is also not allowed. As for the remark about the headphones, Inmates have handheld am/fm radios with headphones. They wouldn’t destroy the only thing that lets them hear music, besides dental floss is stronger! These inmates have 24 hrs a day 7 days a week to just think of ways to get away with things. We have to be smarter, more alert and teach the young officers about what information senior officers have come across. Officers are supposed to be alert and you can’t be alert if you’re listening to music, reading a magazine (also not allowed) or congregating in groups gossiping about anything. Officers are bored and not being trained properly. Their training is written by suits in Tallahassee who most have never worked in a facility or even entertained the idea of entering a facility. Rules are being broken all the time either by officers or all the way up the food chain.
Yes sometimes it does seem like a prison but if you’re watchful and alert you can stop some problems with inmates before it begins. And yes wild bill this is a different career choice it’s not for everyone. Some don’t know how to use the power the have as an officer, and some get corrupted by it and wind up loosing their job.

i agree with what they did, as they said, rules are rules and they knew the rules when they started to work there. There are tons of other people waiting for jobs that can follow the rules

  10. Wild Bill on February 2nd, 2010 7:42 am

Never understood why someone would want to work in a prison in the first place? I mean as a prison employee, you are basically a prisoner yourself while at work. Sure you get to go home at the end of the shift, unlike the actual prisoners, but while at work you are locked up like everyone else. Not trying to offend, just seems like a strange career choice to me.

TO CURIOUS…my son is exactly where he should be….in prison…….he did the crime (nonviolent) so, hes gotta do the time…..and, his judge was very fair in sentencing him….hopefully, this will be a turnaround for him…i will say, in defense of the guards, that when he initially arrived at the facility, he told me that the guards were, for the most part, respectful to the inmates….btw, hes not in the prison located in century
BILL…it wouldnt be “hearsay” if he was the one who heard the conversation exchange between the inmate and guard, with his own ears..
as a footnote: my husband used to work in florida prisons/jails for years…so, i have heard my share of stories about what actually does go on behind the walls..

  13. curious on February 1st, 2010 3:49 pm

to cvan, rebel, nobicshere and pinky , i also know several people that work @ the prison in century and you need to get your ducks in a row before you open your mouth.1) some do go by the rules and if they do not maybe they need to step back and ask themselves some questions and if they are putting others in harm they might need to get another job. 2) the state would not fire anybody over a pair of sunglasses on a first time offense. your pal is not telling you the correct story, maybe they had mp3 built inside them, there is such. 3) they have gotten rid of people w/ drugs, think back several months when the officer was involved in drug bust. she is gone 4) your son did not get incarcerated by being innocent or was he framed

  14. bill on February 1st, 2010 12:24 pm

    Nobic,

I’m really sorry that your son’s in prison. It must hurt you a lot. Thank God i’ve never been in jail at all. Other than going with a preacher friend of mine, in atmore. I met a young man that was in for murder, said that if he got out he would have no problem doing it again.Met some that could talk a slick story that would make you wonder why they were in at all. Most acted just like some normal guy on the out side.
Now is your son going by a prisoners story or does he know for a fact. Fact not here say. Just like prisoners stick together, so do the guards. If a gurad can’t depend on the other guards, then he’s in trouble.

  15. noBICShere on February 1st, 2010 11:42 am

the blatent disregard for following set rules could literally cause bloodshed and/or loss of life for the guards and other inmates…”you aint in kansas, anymore” once you step into a prison facility….speaking of guards w/integrity, though…my son just happens to be in prison, as i speak…unfortunately, he was named as a witness, by another inmate who had lodged a complaint against one of the guards for some type of alledged inappropriate verbal exchange…he “thought” that he was doing the right thing by telling the truth, as he had heard it…ooooh no….wrong!…it was made perfectly clear to him (later) that, “you dont hear anything and you dont see anything”….no longer do i counsel/advise him to be “truthful”…sad, but..true……… for the rules for the game of life are all different now, until he gets out…i do, however, tell him A.) FOLLOW THE RULES, B.)USE “YES SIR, NO SIR” (SHOW RESPECT TO THE GUARDS)…AND, C.) STAY UNDER THE RADAR

  16. dnutjob on February 1st, 2010 8:37 am

Rebel, if your employer told you you could’nt do something at work or if you did you would be terminated would you do it? Evidently these 2 guards who went through training, so therefore should know what is expected of them, did not care enough about thier job or safety to break these rules. They have stiff FDLE regulations and I for one who work around prisoners am glad for these rules.

  17. bill on February 1st, 2010 8:23 am

integrity, honesty, good work ethic and proud of who we are and where we come from.

    AMEN TO THAT, Brother

  18. storm on February 1st, 2010 8:13 am

And to Bill… no they didn’t need to cut two jobs. Every shift is having to force workers to work doubles…we cannot get them trained fast enough. Maybe Americans need to return to the the old way ……. integrity, honesty, good work ethic and proud of who we are and where we come from.

  19. storm on February 1st, 2010 8:06 am

i work at this facility as an officer and can tell you rebel that you are a case of opening your mouth before you think about what you say. These officers have been trained and should know we have rules for a reason. Every person there puts their life on the line when they enter a prison facility. And to have officers that disregard these rules puts us more in danger. I know the officer with the lighter had been warned several times not to bring it in. The bic lighter has a part in it that can be used as a cuff key. And these officers had done several more things that did not follow the guidelines that we ALL must follow. Breaking the smaller infractions is only the start…then what smuggling cell phones and dope (something we have to deal with way to often). For all the good officers…JOB WELL DONE!!!

  20. bill on February 1st, 2010 8:00 am

People break rules all the time, just because it’s silly to you, usually someone could see the need for it. But these two, sounds like they just made an example out of them. Maybe just wanted to cut two jobs. Who knows.

  21. Who's Who on February 1st, 2010 7:33 am

If you can’t follow the rules, thats the price you pay (FIRED) Its simple just follow the rules.

  22. Kim on February 1st, 2010 7:18 am

FYI: There is a part in a bic lighter that can be used to make a cell key.

  23. letmespeak13 on February 1st, 2010 7:03 am

Rules are rules. It seems silly but if a person cannot follow a simple rule what else will they do, not lock a door? etc. These people are grown-ups and should know better. A lighter could be used to start a fire by an inmate and a MP3 player will have ear phones that an inmate could use to strangle someone.

  24. rebel on February 1st, 2010 12:58 am

They got the lighter & player, but the drugs will slip right on by……….Russia ain’t got crap on the bs Americans are puttin up with…….no lighters in a grown persons pocket…..give me a break. I’d a kicked your butt for tryin to take my lighter. The gov supplied tobacco products to it’s people years back, we got addicted, & now they dictate where we can use it. How have ” we the people” got to this point???? This officer has gone thru alot of training, guards societies best, & gets fired for having a lighter in his/her pocket?????? Give me a break!!!!!!!
