Olivia’s Super Sunday In Miami

February 7, 2010

It was a super Sunday in Miami for the Bush family as they spent a little family time a short distance from the Super Bowl. But the big game for the family was not Sunday night, it will be Monday as daughter Olivia undergoes brain surgery at Miami Children’s Hospital.

We first introduced you to Olivia Bush back in early December. Olivia Bush, 6, is blind, able to see only a little light with her left eye. She has a shunt to drain fluid off of her brain, and has frequent seizures.

After a six hour surgery on Monday, doctors think Olivia could see a significant improvement in her life. During the surgery, doctors will remove a portion of her brain — basically taking out the bad, non-functioning portion and leaving behind the good, healthy tissue.

Just before Christmas, Olivia and her family traveled to Miami Children’s Hospital hoping to find a cure for her seizures. While in Miami, Olivia was monitored by a 35-lead EEG and a video camera with doctors hoping to capture data from a seizure. On the Tuesday night before Christmas, she had a seizure that was captured on the EEG and video, according to her father Tad Bush. That information has allowed doctors to schedule Monday’s surgery.

“I am so excited about this!  I am so happy that if all goes well, Olivia could finally be seizure free! Maybe no more meds?  Praise the Lord!” said Olivia’s mom Amber Bush.

Sunday concluded a few days of family time for Olivia and her parents. Trips to the museum, the zoo and churches. Tonight will be their final family time prior to Monday’s big surgery. Churches in the Atmore and North Escambia area, as well as one in Miami, gathered in prayer for Olivia.

“So, now we are in Miami and the Super Bowl frenzy has already started.  We got to see the Saints buses and police entourage pass by,” Amber said Thursday. “You would have thought it was a funeral procession by all the people stopping to look.  Ridiculous to me…but I could care less about football.  Them being in town just made our hotel cost a lot more.”

NorthEscambia.com will publish an updated story on Olivia next week.
