Escambia Deputy Found Not Guilty Of Aggravated Assault

February 26, 2010

An Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been found not guilty on two counts of aggravated assault for allegedly pointed a gun at two people in Pensacola in August, 2009. Deputy Joseph Dejoie, a 15 year veteran with the Escambia Sheriff’s Office, was accused of threatening two brothers with a pistol in an alleged road rage incident on Cervantes Street.

The incident began around 3:15 p.m. August 3 in the 800 block of Scenic Highway after Dejoie, who was driving an Infiniti G35, stopped suddenly in the middle of the road, causing the driver of a Jeep Cherokee to slam on its brakes, according to Pensacola Police. The driver of the other vehicle – Dylan Johnson, 21, of  Pensacola – honked his horn at Dejoie. This resulted in an exchange of profanities and insults between occupants of both vehicles, which continued westbound on Cervantes Street, according to police reports. Dejoie is accused of pointing a handgun at Johnson and his 15-year-old brother, a passenger in Johnson’s vehicle.

The brothers told police they turned north on 19th Avenue to escape, and called 911 to report the incident. Dejoie also called 911 at about the same time to report that he believed the brothers were armed.

Deputy Dejoie was on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.

It’s called vindication. The system works. The Deputy was cleared. Enough said.

Billy…..as for me, myself and I….I just know that job title don’t make the person…If they found him not guilty, then fine…I don’t hate anyone…but I do know a few cops, have lots of respect for them and the danger they place themselves in daily but they are only human..not perfect nor am I.

He was acquitted by a jury of his peers. That means the S.A. could not prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. That has nothing to do with the Judge. In a jury trial, the judge is there only to make sure procedures are followed, mediate for the attorney’s, deliver sentencing instructions to the jury and sentence the defendant. Cop or not, the system works.

The citizens of our county found him not guilty………….why are you upset. You think that he is automattically guilty because he is a police officer……..that means that you are the person that you hate.

    morning Big B

Yes your right bill, you just never know.
Even if the cop WAS wrong, do we really know if the judge was
going to throw the book at an officer and ruin his long career over a regular citizen.
I think we as readers of this story can only hope that justice was
served! Thats really all we ever can do.

Deputy Dejoie may not be guilty. But then he may have been. Who knows? Sometimes it’s really hard to prove who’s telling the truth.

    Let’s see…

    1) if the deputy gets convicted we all would be on here slamming the ’sorry’ cops

    2) he gets acquitted and we are on here slamming ’sorry’ cops

    What gives?

If a normal citizen threatened someone with a gun like this they would get the 10-20-Life treatment.

An off duty cop gets a paid vacation.

I honked my horn the other day at a kid not paying attention at a red light. He gave me the universal sign language, I just waved back, no universal sign just a wave. He got very angry just because he wasn’t paying attention. When you put two together with this additude you get road rage. Then you usually have two moving vehicles flying down the road jepardizine everyone on the highway, or like I witnessed in cantonment where one driver gets out of his car and was met with the muzzle of a pistol when he got to the window of the other driver. The guy out of his car cooled off rater quickly. Could have ended very badly. Keep you cool, and your health.
