‘Golden Cow Dung Award’ Presented To Ernest Ward Teacher

February 27, 2010

Ernest Ward Middle School Family & Consumer Science teacher Kathy Ellis received the second annual “Golden Cow Dung Award” by members of the Ernest Ward FFA. The award featured a large piece of cow dung, painted a golden color.

(Cow dung, in case you did not know, is what you are probably thinking it is. It’s that natural byproduct that cows drop in the field.)

Ellis received the award from the school’s FFA members as a “thank you” for supporting FFA.

Friday wrapped up National FFA Week at Ernest Ward. “Lead Out Loud” was the theme of National FFA Week this year as more than half a million members around the nation participated  in National FFA Week activities at the local and state levels.

EWMS FFA sponsor Cynthia Wilson said the group wanted to thank Ellis for her continued support of the organization. She also said she wanted to thank the area farmers and other member of the agricultural community that support the FFA.

    Kathy,
Congratz!!!! On your golden award so what if it is dung. You have always supported and been there for the students and it shows. You are an awesome teacher. Students have so much on their plate that it is beneficial for them to have some good clean fun and to know that adults can have a sense of humor as well. No matter what the prize is…. a pail of milk, churn butter, hamburger, t-bone steak, or dung we appreciate everything you do for them.

FYI,Where is your sense of humor? If she is pleased with the award, who are we to say it was in bad taste?

I thought this was a bad idea last year and I still think it’s a bad idea. It’s just not in good taste. There are so many many more things in better taste that they could do to show their appreciation. A gift certificate, perhaps? Some starter vegetable plants? A bouquet of flowers? If this “golden cow dung award” is what they give a person they appreciate, what would they give a person they didn’t appreciate? There’s no good place to put this “award”. I’m sure it still smells and who would want it in their home or office? It’s just not classy.

Only at EWMS could I be honored by this award! I love my students and feel blessed to support their clubs, teams, and THEM! Thank you FFA for this impressive chunk of gold! It’s a conversation starter for certain!
