Deputies Release Sketch Of Walmart Rape Suspect

January 5, 2010

Escambia County deputies have released a composite sketch of a suspect that kidnapped a woman from an Escambia County Walmart before raping her.

walmartsuspect.jpgThe incident was reported about 11:25 last Friday night in the parking lot of the Ensley Walmart on Highway 29.  The woman told deputies that she was having car trouble in the parking lot when the man put a knife to her throat and forced her into the back of a van.  She was driven a short distance before her attacker raped her. She was driven back to Walmart and dropped off, told that she would be killed if she reported the attack to authorities.

The suspect is a white male believed to be 30 to 40 years old. He had brown hair with some red mixed it, and a mustache and goatee. The suspect had a thin build, smelled like cigarettes and had sunken cheeks, according to Sgt. Ted Roy, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

“The suspect vehicle is believed to be a newer model dark blue minivan, most likely borrowed due to the suspect being unfamiliar with the controls,” Roy said. “The vehicle is possibly a Ford Windstar, Dodge Caravan or a Chrysler Town and Country with windows throughout.”

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (850) 436-9630 or Crime Stoppers at 850-433-STOP (7867).

this sketch is very nice and all, but it would be very helpful to the public if we could see a sketch of what he might look like without the mustache and goatee. no doubt he shaved immediately after the crime. hope he is caught. if you know someone that matches the description and has recently shaved off his mustache and goatee, it could be reasonable for that person to be investigated. and did they ever catch that guy who was impersonating a police officer and assaulting women from a few months ago?

The cameras are about as good as the security guy, I’ve seen the security guy nappin, guess so are the cameras.

Ever notice how these things ALWAYS (pun intended) seem to happen at Walmart? Not Target, Winn Dixie, Publix or even Kmart. This is exactly why we (most of us) don’t want Walmart here in Niceville! They are a trashy corporation with trasy stores that attract trashy people who commit crimes.

“You must be super, hyper vigilent these days and never depend on anyone else for your safety.”

People, you need to get a grip on reality! This was a crime, and the perp is a low-life, but things like this have been going on since time began and the only difference is that we get it fed constantly to us by media.

Good, honest, humane people outnumber the scum by thousands to one, so don’t get all scared about the world. It’s no worse now than it ever was, the only difference is we are all more aware of bad events that happen.

Hold your head high, live your life, do what’s right and have faith in your fellow man. You’ll find that good conquers evil every time.

First, the security cameras on the front of a store are not for the customers protection, they are there in event the store is robbed, and aids with obtaining a possible shot of the criminal..his escape can lead them to his entering shot and possibly provide a good ID….Second, Most always the security guard is in his vehicle sitting way out near the incoming road by the gas station at the Ensley store, . and he is not there for your protection he is there for Walmarts.
I once lost my purse in the store and when they sent the PO on duty to help me he asked me what I wanted him to do…….DAH…? Now why in the world would that store be interested in the customers safety? They rarely have anyone there to help a customer……But on the other hand they are not in the business of protection.. Customers are a dime a dozen to a company as big as Walmarts.

i just meant i hoped that they would be more aware of their surroundings when approaching any parking lot or their cars. So many times we are in such a hurry (me included) and we just rush out to our cars without really looking around. No offense taken!

have no fear, the pensacola news urinal just ran a story about this incident after lunch…within hours this guy will be behind bars!!!

    lol…

    seriously…be careful out there…

I wish more of you hated Walmart and boycotted. That would leave me better parking spots and shorter checkout lanes. :poke

As for females needing to be more careful….. We ALL need to be more cognizant of our surroundings. There are always crooks and creeps looking to take advantage of anyone who demonstrates vulnerability.

very unfortunate for the lady involved but i dont think its walmart’s fault.any body that ever saw one of those walmart rentacops and would count on them in time of need then your just not too bright.sure their there but yeah thats about it.get your concealed carry lic. then get a gun you can shoot proficently.

  10. AL on January 5th, 2010 2:45 pm

by the way, observer, my apologies if I jumped the gun. As a thriver that is a major hot button for me.

an observer wrote : ….i hope she and all females are careful from now on.

STOP that train!!!!! Maybe it is just the phrasing of that thought, but it sure comes across as “if she had been more careful this wouldn’t have happened” . … welcome to America where women aren’t locked away like kept animals. This wouldn’t have happened if some jerk didn’t decide to steal something either because he couldn’t afford to buy it somewhere or is too inept to have it given. This poor lady has every right in the world to think she IS being careful by shopping in a lighted parking lot with “security” patrols.

  12. an observer on January 5th, 2010 1:30 pm

I’m surprised he even drove her back to her car….this gives her more time to get a better description of him and the van. Usually when something like this happens, they drop them wherever and leave them…they don’t the “courteous” thing and drive them back to thier cars where they took them from. She’s lucky, this time….i hope she and all females are careful from now on.

  13. LStevens on January 5th, 2010 12:45 pm

PNJ finally posted the story, today. geesh took long enough. somebody knows this guy…

  14. LStevens on January 5th, 2010 11:45 am

That’s exactly why I have my concealed weapons permit, train with my gun and always carry it when I’m out! You must be super, hyper vigilent these days and never depend on anyone else for your safety. Its a hard lesson to learn and sadly most only learn it the hard way. Prayers for this woman.

Why on earth is the PNJ ignoring this story? Do they have problems with the credibility of the story or what? I’d like to know.

    Hangin’s too good for him!

    well, you get my drift…

  16. concerned on January 5th, 2010 11:30 am

all those in favor of a walmart boycot, great! Walmart says they support our troops and the military, but if they really did they would sell american made stuff not comunist inport crap from china. no one seems to have much money right now and we are all making budget cuts at home.
Budget cuts do not mean safety cuts. personal safety should be a top priority for all businesses! what does the walmart “Vice” squad do other than drive around the parking lot? I hope the lady can recover from this trauma,.

  17. concerned on January 5th, 2010 11:11 am

I will boycott Walmart. No problem with that. Plus I don’t have anymoney either.
I hope and pray that sweet lady will recover. I just can’t imagine what it must of been like for her. I think we trust people to many times, when we should’nt. Its not like the old days when everyone watched out for one another.
I do hope this is another wake up call for all of us to not shop late at night or never shop alone.
Stay safe all and have a great day. ohh I heard it might snow thursday. How cool is that.

  19. JUDY C. MASEK on January 4th, 2010 11:16 am

seems to me, that walmart has given many a false sense of security all of this time….most people have heard that walmart has cameras on the parking lot and probably have believed that their safety was being securely monitor…rude awakening!….maybe a trusty can of mace (in the hand) is in order, when walking thru the parking lot, day or nite….however, just to be fair, i will recount an incident that ocurred in a wallymart parking lot a few years ago..during the daylight….mobile hwy, i believe….a mother-daughter scam team, apparently…..as my step-daughter was sloooowly backing out of her parking spot, a “young lady” walked by the back end of the vehicle, bumped it, fell the ground wailing away that shed been hit by the car backing out….then, along comes the excited “mother”, adding to the drama…to make a long story short, had it not been for the parking lot cameras, the incident may not have been so easily resolved….needless to say, the scheming pair took off when the officer went inside to review the video….just sayin’……

  20. wonder on January 4th, 2010 1:17 am

Why do they not have cameras in the partking lot not just on the buildings. Also did they look on the cameras of the people going into the store this is very up close right above the door.

    REGARDING:
“I’ve been tracking our expenses and the result is we are spending LESS by staying out of Walmart”

I also spend less by staying out of Walmart. They have all those things I didn’t know I wanted until I went in and saw them.

David thinking I need another printer, guess I may have to chance Walmart again

  22. David Huie Green on January 3rd, 2010 11:41 pm

    REGARDING:
” We were parked right in front of the surveillance camera about 6th and 8th car. The police were called and the so called surveillance cameras are useless- it would not even pick up tag numbers, faces,etc-don’t know why they have them. ”

I don’t know any details you don’t give, but using all cameras together and over time should have given them a much better picture. After all, the car came from somewhere and went somewhere. If they were driving around looking for easy marks, there should have been several minutes or even hours of footage showing them. Surely at some point they would have been near enough to a camera to get a good image of the people and their car.

    David wanting all criminals stopped

I am so sorry for this woman, and I do hope they find this man or should I say idiot soon. A real man wouldn’t rape a woman…

  24. spay and neuter your pets on January 3rd, 2010 7:27 pm

How sad, I pray the scumbag gets caught. The woman is blessed to have not been brutally murdered as well.. My heart goes out to her. That Walmart has become a pit. I never go to that one after dark. The Walmart on Creighton is less than 10 minutes farther away, much nicer and the parking lot is better lit.

  25. Beth on January 3rd, 2010 7:15 pm

I hope this woman is able to recover. It is hard to be 100% safe all the time. If a person is too comfortable with their surroundings they are more likely to be less careful. I do not go shopping at night by myself, because I know there a ton of crazy people. But I do go during the day by myself and sometimes with my young daughter. It really doesn’t matter what time you go, if someone wants to hurt some else bad enough they are going to do it whether it’s day or night.Just don’t get too comfortable anywhere and don’t trust people you don’t know. I hate to even say that but it’s true.

  26. none of your business on January 3rd, 2010 5:41 pm

    Yes it’s just that fast.
Ppl tell you you have to be careful, like your being irresponsible. These
ppl are artist at what they do, and very practiced. If they want something
    you don’t have a chance.
If we would all boycott walmart for a while, maybe they would beef up
security, at least enough that no one would be grabbed and raped.
I suppose there will always be pick pockets and oportunists.

My daughters car would not crank at the same walmart app. 2 years ago and their was 1 car parked inbetween us and this was app at 2 pm and she got out of her car and came to mine and someone drove by, got out and opened her door and grabbed her purse and cell phone- just that fast! They had to be watching us. She had not locked her door because she walked to my car and was going to go right back and get her stuff. We were parked right in front of the surveillance camera about 6th and 8th car. The police were called and the so called surveillance cameras are useless- it would not even pick up tag numbers, faces,etc-don’t know why they have them. Security guard was on the other side of parking lot and didn’t see anything. We were there and did not see everything. These people know what they are doing. We think we saw the car driving away but never seen the person.

  28. none of your business on January 3rd, 2010 5:08 pm

    oops Sorry my bad!
I see it was a guy who said his family stopped shoping walmart!
    Sorry

  29. none of your business on January 3rd, 2010 5:07 pm

I’m with the girl that doesn’t go to walmart anymore.
She is right publix’s is much nicer and so is their merchandise. The last
three things I bought from walmart didn’t work anyway.
CHINA IS MAKING BILLIONS ON CRAP THAT THEY SEND US
    THAT DOESN’T WORK.
I bought a can opener and it didn’t work. I am again using my can
opener that is from the 40’s that say’s Made in the USA. lol
I bought a stanley coffee thermos in Walmart, and after two weeks
it wouldn’t keep the coffee warm. It was made in China. My husband
now carries our 1950’s stanley thermos, that says Made in the USA,
and it works perfect. I just thought the new ones looked new and it
was time. But the old one works, so thats what we will use.
I bought three meat thermometers in there. JUNK! all three.
None of them worked. All the little hands were bent when you
took them out of the package.
Walmart Sucks, and China should be nuked!

We all have to be careful about everything anymore.
Being taken to the cleaners, having our wallets stolen, like I did.
Having our phone stolen, like someone did my daughter at walmart.
Rapes, Perv’s, Peepers. Gees Where will it END!

  30. Careful shopper on January 3rd, 2010 4:22 pm

If this woman was in the parking lot having trouble with her car at this time of the night then the Security Guard should have seen her. I go to Walmart’s all the time late at night and shop. I am very careful when I leave the building to go to my car. If I park real close I will ask the person at the door to watch me while I go to my car… Or if I can’t get a close parking spot then I ask the Security Guard to walk me to my car… They have never refused to do this. It is up to us to make sure we are as safe as possible… No-one else is going to do it for you. If you ASK! They will not volunteer, but that is what they are there for- YOUR SAFETY…

  33. Molino Man on January 3rd, 2010 9:19 am

Our family stopped shopping at Walmart about six months ago. Got tired of it.

We now shop at Publix and Target in Pensacola for most of our groceries every couple of weeks. We will stop in to Piggly Wiggly, Winn Dixie or Southern Family Food Fair in Atmore to pick up sale items

I’ve been tracking our expenses and the result is we are spending LESS by staying out of Walmart. Plus people at the Target and Publix are nicer, the merchandise is better quality. The meats and produce at Publix put Walmart to shame. Publix has a butcher and a butcher shop in the store. Walmart shrink wraps the meat at a factory somewhere and sprays it with something to make it pretty and shiny.. Yum,

  34. Chris Maloney on January 3rd, 2010 9:15 am

I worked at the hwy 29 store for almost 5 years and yes they do have functional cameras in the parking lot. Unfortunately, its not going to be anything close up. Remember those cameras are on top of the buildings, its at night, the incident probably happened 100-200ft from the camera, and I don’t think those cameras are very high resolution. The authorities might could figure out the make & model of the van but I seriously doubt a tag # is possible unless he drove right in front of the building. Although I do hope they prove me wrong on all this.

I think with her description and at least a make & model of the van this guy will get caught pretty soon.

  35. concerned citizen on January 3rd, 2010 9:13 am

cameras or no cameras I am not going to be there by myself at night. unless it is absolutely necessary. I am afraid even when my husband is with me. I hope they find him and bring him in. It’s a sad world when you can’t even go shopping without being afraid of being attacked.

  36. bill on January 3rd, 2010 7:58 am

I wonder about the cameras as well. I do know that cameras don’t stop crime. I also wonder how much of this store has been left out. Just the story its self had a few holes in it. Did he handcuff her, tie her or have some way of keeping her in the van while he got into the front to drive. No matter how he did it, I hope he is caught. Even if they do, you can’t unrape the deed has been done and this poor woman will never be able to forget it.

My first thought, too. What about surveillance cameras?? Also, I know during the day, Walmart has a *security* car patrolling the parking lot. How about at night? They are open 24/7, correct?

  40. Brenda on January 3rd, 2010 12:58 am

I saw this report on WEAR-3 also. Umm, correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Wal-Mart have tons of surveillance cameras in the parking lot? Where’s the video?
