Teen Driver Hits House

January 14, 2010

A teen driver was not seriously injured when he hit a tree and house this morning in Walnut Hill.

The 16-year old male driver was  southbound on Juniper Street when he lost control of his Ford Mustang, struck a small tree and spun around into the porch of a wood frame house at 105 Juniper Street. The car missed a propane tank on the corner of the house by just inches in the 8:10 a.m. accident.

The driver was transported to Atmore Community hospital with minor injuries. No one in the house was injured, and there was no significant damage to the house.

The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Atmore Ambulance responded to the call.

The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Pictured: The driver of this Mustang hit a tree before hitting the porch of this house Thursday morning on Juniper Street in Walnut Hill. The damage to car visible in the photograph was caused by the tree, not the house. NorthEscambia.com photo, click to enlarge.

That is true! You can always replace a car but not a life! Thank goodness the good lord was watching over him! :) )

Let me get this right; from now on we are not going to be allowed to blog unless:

    1) we were there
    2) the person in the story is a relative
    3) it is not their vehicle

    Okay.

    1/4 mile is what…roughly 1350 feet?

That car, even for a lowly mustang should be able to do mid high 15’s @ mid 90’s in decent air in the 1/4 mile. So if he was more than 600 feet from his driveway, he had time to accelerate to excessive speed.

Seeing as the car is newer, and seemingly in well cared for shape, I doubt that a mechanical failure is to blame, therefore it must have been driver error.

Now…Driver error entails Texting, talking on phone, playing with radio, speeding, being wreckless, driving the car beyond its limits, or in some cases, all of the above.

While I had no problems not getting in trouble with my sports car…a majority of teens simply cannot handle a sports car, they are responsible enough to drive a sports car. They shouldnt be allowed behind the wheel of a sports car legally. I went to Tate, and it was common for some kid to get ahold of something even mildly quick…then take it and put it in a ditch, up a tree, into another car…etc

Yes, you can wreck a freakin Civic….but it takes alot less effort with a sports car.

  4. i dunno on January 16th, 2010 12:18 am

    No….he wasn’t speeding…..or cuttin-up……or anything like that……..whatever……….

  9. I.MOE on January 15th, 2010 3:15 pm

Look hear man if you got some negative 2 comment, then don’t comment at all. What if this was yo first cuzin in this accident and people was leaving negative comments???yea thank of it that way. But…Anywayz im glad you ok cuz

  10. Serena on January 15th, 2010 1:25 pm

FYI….there are a lot of teenagers that have a mustang that go to Northview. Therefore, if he shouldn’t drive a mustang then the other students shouldn’t drive one. The bottom line is that the car can be replace, but never a life. Thank God you are okay, DJ. This family has been through enough with accidents within the past couple of years. I cannot understand why, or even want to understand why (in some people’s mind) that someone cannot simply say Thank God, he is okay, but can leave negative comments. Yes, it may be true that one can voice their opinions, but God give us since when, where, how, and why to voice them. May God bless everyone and remember this can happen to anyone!

    A simple what-if….

What if some kids were playing next to the house….?

What if it were your kids, or some kids in your family that were next to the house?

Car skids 2 feet to the left…the whole thing goes up in a fireball.

  12. SW on January 15th, 2010 11:46 am

    Good grief.

The kid wrecked his nice new car. No one was hurt, thankfully. Other property damage was minimal, thankfully.

Increased insurance rates, probably; possible ticket from trooper; hurt feelings. Hopefully, some lessons were learned.

How many times has this story been played out in our lives?

  13. Nolan Taylor on January 15th, 2010 11:26 am

    im glad your ok dj!

  14. bobbie on January 15th, 2010 10:53 am

Hmmm…i thought you did have a blue car when you were 16

  15. Elmer Fudd on January 15th, 2010 9:01 am

Like it or not, the cold hard fact is this kid made a mistake, or this car wouldn’t look like it does. Just like the young lady a few weeks ago that ended up in the ditch on Greenland road. THE FACT IS THEY MADE A MISTAKE, OR THE END RESULT WOULD BE DIFFERENT, YOU WOULDN’T BE READING ABOUT IT ON NE. Their parents or someone needs to sit them down and figure out what the mistake was, to the best of their ability and try to explain how to prevent the next accident. Folks, the big problem I see here is that I think most people don’t realize we are talking about life and death here, not dropping a fly ball in baseball or a fumble in football. Both these kids could have very easily ended up in the funeral home if the circumstances had been a little different. A friend and I actually saw a accident happen on highway 4 several years ago, it didn’t look that bad to us, the car wasn’t going all that fast, but the driver was killed, he hit just right to break his neck. I backed into a parked car more than forty years ago when I was sixteen. Like both these kids, it wasn’t my fault, it was the neighbors fault for parking his car in his drive way. I remember the feelings I had about my accident, embarrassment etc. I might have backed into more cars or worst if my parents hadn’t sit me down and made me understand that it was my fault. I think most of the people on here want to prevent a young person from ending up a fatality in a needless accident, sometimes you have to hurt a teens feelings about driving. But if it saves one teens life, it’s more than worth it.

  16. NoNo5.0 on January 15th, 2010 9:00 am

What I see is a young driver that had more car than he had driving skill. Speeding? We cant say for sure, but generally speaking you dont lose control enough to skid sideways into a tree and still have the momentum to slide through a yard, and into a house.

A mustang GT isnt exactly a high performance machine, but it absolutely isnt a sports car that can straighten curves…however it has more than enough power to get the driver in big trouble.

Id venture a guess that there was a bad case of oversteer going on here and the driver was ill equipped to counter the oversteer, and simply lost it. A couple days of performance driving school, such as Bondurant Driving School can be invaluable to someone who drives aggressively….and wrecklessly.

I drove a Corvette from the day I turned 16, through HS, and then another 3 years, 5 in total..never got pulled over, never had any accidents. Defensive driving, knowing your own limit as a driver, and the limit of your car…goes a long way. Because as I was told when I got my first car. Being Careless will make you carless. Corny, but true.

Morgan, you need to spend a little more time in English class, honey!

  18. me on January 15th, 2010 7:27 am

If you have ever been down this road then you would know that this kid had to have been speeding. Short road with two pretty big curves. If it is on northescambia.com then it is our business. Everyone has a right to an opinion. If you don’t like them, then don’t read them.

    REGARDING:
“Cars are not made out of the same materials they once were. One can be dented just by leaning on it with ones elbow.”

That’s a design feature. In the old days, the car would survive a colision with minimal damage ut the people inside received the energy of the collision and were killed. Engineers decided people were more important than machines and designed for energy absorption by the cars rather than by the children inside them.

It’s expensive but cheaper than replacing a son.

An Adult usually has had many years of driving . And It’s always, always those that have connections with the driver GET VERY UP SET AT FOLKS Who suggest the teen or young adult was speeding, talking on a cell phone or be honest trying to get the most weeeee out of his ride.
Hey folks can just check the public police report and that’s the end of the truth. I real don’t give a rip. I am very happy he got out of it unhurt. In fact he proably won’t do it again for awhile.

  29. khADIJah on January 14th, 2010 4:55 pm

tHANK god no one was hurt no matter how badly the car is damaged the driver is what is really important in reality he must have had an angle over his head …

  30. Angi on January 14th, 2010 4:52 pm

I agree with EMD on vehicles aren’t made like they use to be, here a few months ago my husband had drove my brand new 2009 car to brewton to wal-mart, as he was leaving he was driving in front of the store coming down to the stop sign nearest the building. He stopped at the stop sign, while waiting on a car that was coming and was going to turn in, but unfortunately while he was sitting still at the stop sign, this lady didn’t go up far enough to turn in and so she ran right into the front of my car. Almost $1,000.00 worth of damage, so it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you’re going, these vehicles of makes today aren’t very good and can be alot damaged… However I know that people do drive at a high rate of speed on these roads, but one can’t really assume what was actually done and the cause, unless one is there themselves…

  31. atmore on January 14th, 2010 4:04 pm

  33. EMD on January 14th, 2010 1:54 pm

Cars are not made out of the same materials they once were. One can be dented just by leaning on it with ones elbow.

Over 15 years ago, I backed up and scraped against a gas line marker, that I didn’t see and even that far back had $800 worth of damage.

The worse case scenario is not always what actually happened.

  34. whitepunknotondope on January 14th, 2010 1:51 pm

Just what do you think the speed limit on this side road is? To cause that kind of damage little boy had to be moving along pretty fast.

  39. Angi on January 14th, 2010 9:18 am

Oh my goodness, that tree must have not been real small to have done this kind of damage to this car. Glad to here that no one was hurt seriously, hope everyone involved will be ok…
