Negotiations To Continue Between Mediacom And WEAR

January 1, 2010

Mediacom cable television customers can breathe a temporary sigh of relief if they were worried about a new year without their favorite ABC programming and football. For just over a week, WEAR TV 3 will remain on Mediacom as negotiations continue between the cable TV company and Sinclair Broadcasting, the parent company of WEAR.

Sinclair and Mediacom have agreed to continue negotiations over retransmission fees for at least eight more days — until January 8. Several Congressmen had petitioned the FCC to intervene in the dispute — especially since WEAR will air the January 7 national championship game between Texas and Alabama.

Sinclair had previously set a deadline of midnight December 31 to pull their programming for about 100,000 Mediacom customers.

A similar dispute between the two companies resulted in Mediacom customers without ABC programming for about a month in 2007.

William, I hate to be so ignorant about this broadcast stuff but a couple of questions.

Will some other station that broadcast in this area be able to pick up the programing on channel 3 and broadcast? Or is these programs just gone?

    Thanks

It’s always Sinclair that doesn’t want to pay their expenses. I don’t recall hearing about the other local network stations balking about the fundamental expense of having their programming rebroadcast so that cable subscribers can watch their programs. And what’s up with the congress critters taking sides with one business over another???
