January 8, 2010

The Escambia County Commission has named Larry Newsom as the county’s interim county administrator.

Newson currently serves as Escambia County’s manager of traffic engineering. He will begin his new duties on February 7, the day after the non-renewed contract of current Administrator Bob McLaughlin. Thursday night, the commission voted 4-1, with Marie Young voting against, to officially not renew McLaughlin’s contract.

Also Thursday night,  commissioners voted unanimously to name Joy Blackmon as an interim assistant administrator.

A national search for a permanent administrator will begin in Monday with the goal of hiring the a permanent administrator by April.

Newsom and Blackmon will return to to their respective jobs once a permanent administrator is hired.

As Traffic Engineer you informed me several years ago that the Traffic Light at the corner of Olive and Cody was approved and the county was waiting for funding. Then Late last year you responded to the Homeowner Association and again said the light was on schedule with the engineering complete and the money available. Supposedly the construction was to be completed by the end of 2009.

I know it became contingent on the road work on Olive and then the development of a new housing project on Olive. Well there is now no road work being done and even the sign for the housing project has been removed. So, it is time and there is definitely a safety concern for the light.

Some mornings the traffic is backed up passed the entrance to Mazerick Plantition and almost back to the two housing areas befored Olive. It is hard to get in or out of the housing areas. But more importantly, there is the safety problems. There have been some accidents but a lot of near accidents. There are a lot of elderly citizens in these housing areas and their lives are being endangered.. There is a continous increase in the number of cars using Olive and Cody/Jernigan to get to and from work and the University of West Florfida.

Do we have to wait until there is a death at that corner? Please get us a light as has been planned and promised.

Again, I ask that you or the individual now filling the Traffice Engineer positon take the necessary action to install a light. If we keep wainting for what might take place there will never be a light at the location as approved.

    Thank you,

Maybe this is what’s really behind Wilson Robertson’s delay vote on consolidation. How does the county expect to find someone who is willing to take the county administrator job if it would be around for 6 or 7 months after he or she is hired. That’s saying if consolidation was approved by the voters.
