Deputy Knocked Down By Teen, Manhunt Follows

January 19, 2010

Deputies surrounded a Cantonment neighborhood Monday afternoon after an Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputy was knocked down by a young teen suspect.

The problems started a little after 12:30 Monday when deputies responded to the area of  Wegner Avenue where a couple of teens were reported to be threatening other kids with a gun. One of the teens was taken into custody without incident, but the second pushed a deputy and fled on foot.

Deputies created a perimeter around the neighborhood, a short distance from Allen Memorial United Methodist Church. A sheriff’s K-9 unit was called to the area to assist in the hunt for the teenage suspect.

He was captured a short time later by a homeowner when he tried to break into a neighborhood home. The homeowner held the teen until officers could take him into custody.

Further details were not immediately available.

    None of your business,

Not at all, in your situation. I was actually refering to whitepunk on drugs’ comment on the other article. I made a mistake and posted my comments all in one rant. But, it sounds like he has already laid out his plans to ambush a would be intruder. If that situation ever does happen to him, the state attorney will have an open and shut case of premeditation. There is nothing wrong with having a plan to protect yourself and/or family. The point I am trying to make is if you are going to defend yourself, you had better make sure you are acting under the color of the law or you could be possibly be charged with a crime. Most likely you wouldn’t be. But you can’t predict how the S.A. offfice will react to a particular situation unless it is well within the guidelines of self defense or the castle doctrine. Just because someone enters your house is not enough. You have to have a reasonable and well founded fear that you and/or family are in imminent danger of great bodily harm and/or death also.
Scenaro: Someone is coming through your bedroom window. You do not see a weapon. You do not tell him that you are armed and for him to leave. You just shoot him on site. During the investigation, you find out that it is your neighbor that was drunk and didn’t realize he was at the wrong house. He just thought he had locked himself out of his house. No criminal intent. Just an honest mistake. That exact scenario has happened before. You probably would not be charged for shooting him, but you would have to live with that death for the rest of your life. I agree you should have a gun for home defense. But, you had better be ready to answer for your decision to use it, if you ever have to. Protect yourself and good luck.

    DOUG
Then tell me, is is premeditated when they come IN my house over and
over, and one home invasion and when we ran them off, they went
down the street and tried it on sonya and david our neighbor.
The officers told us we better get cameras on the place and guns to
    protect ourselves.

    SO WE DID!

Now if they come in and we kill them, is the premeditated and or just
    protecting ourselves.

    ?

In response to Cantonment Deputy. This was not mean’t as disrespect in any way. I still would like to see more patrols in the area. If you look at the news in the last few days there is a lot of trouble around the Cantonment area and I believe a more visible presence would help. It did in Brownsville.
To all the ones who want to shoot first, what would you say if it was your kid, brother or nephew?

AM, Those deputies would be happy to patrol your area more often, if they were not busy handling all of the other calls or had more deputies to help carry the load. Call your Sheriff and talk to him about his lying about putting more deputies in the Cantonment/Molino area. Crime has doubled in Cantonment over the past few years and they still have only two-three deputies on duty at a time up here. Getting more deputies up here is the only way we are going to see a more visible presence. To all of you who are wanting to shoot first and ask questions later, I’ll tell you this. You had better make sure you are within the law or you will be locked up for manslaughter or worse. It sounds to me like some of you will fall into the premeditated murder category. That carries the death penalty in this state. Good luck!

i am glad he was caught w/o the use of a gun..the home owner did a good job..What is this ..shoot 1st ask questions later..GEEZ..i do agree all the kids w/guns..i does start @ home..Parents should be held accountable for leaving a gun around or even if thier kid has a gun…I am lucky ..out of 4 kids ..none has been in trouble w/the law!! yet i see the kids that mine went to school with…getting in serious trouble w/the law….1 is in jail for 15 yrs..he was 18 when he went in..(armed robbery) another is playing w/the rotating jail door…from disorderly conduct to kidnap & rape..& is still waiing for court dates on 3 other charges..yes 1 charge has to do w/a gun..yet another sits in jail for murder…im just a small town MOM….who has been blessed..my kids could have turned out for the worse…wasnt the MOM i should have been..but i still have a 13 yr old @ home who is doing GREAT!!! Excuse me whitepunknotondope “Too bad the homeowner didn’t shoot first and ask questions later. A missed opportunity!” Are you not the same one that said 11 months in jail was too harsh for the donkey killer? Now you want someone to kill a kid. Wow, I think we are in real trouble here.

THE COMMENT WAS RIGHT AND IT WAS WRONG. YOU DON’T WANT TO KILL ANYBODY, ESPECIALLY A KID, BUT MOST OF THE “KIDS” NOWDAYS, WOULD NOT THINK TWICE ABOUT BLOWING SOMEBODY’S HEAD OFF. I BURIED A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE LAST SUMMER, ALSO A FIREMAN, BECAUSE SOME PUNK PIECE OF GARBAGE KID BLEW HIS HEAD OFF FOR NO REASON. LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING, ANYBODY, INCLUDING A KID, TRIES TO KILL ME, OR POINTS A GUN AT ME, AS GOD AS MY WITNESS I’LL KILL HIM DEAD. IT’S THE KID’S FAULT, YET IT’S NOT THE KID’S FAULT. HE CHOSE TO DO THIS OF HIS OWN ACCORD, BUT THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM STARTED MANY YEARS AGO IN THE HOME, WHERE HIS PARENTS SHOULD HAVE RAISED HIM BETTER. THAT’S THE PROBLEM THESE DAYS, THE PARENTS. THEY DON’T RAISE THEIR KIDS TO CHOOSE RIGHT FROM WRONG AND KNOW THAT THERE IS A CONSEQUENCES FOR WHAT THEY DO. SOME OF THE PARENT’S FAULTS IS THAT THEY THEMSELVES HAD NO RAISING EITHER. SO ALL OF THIS TROUBLE, AND ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS FALL ON WHO?, US, THE PUBLIC. OTHER PEOPLE DEALING WITH KIDS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH IN THE HOME MANY YEARS AGO.

“It would be best if the deputies would patrol the area more often ”

If you would like (or need) more patrols in your neighborhood, call the Sheriff’s Office @ 426-9630 and tell them that. Tell them the specific problem too (i.e. kids on skateboards at 4 to 6 pm, red car circling block with lights off, or whatever your specific concern is). If you know where the offender lives, or his or her name, tell them that too.
The Deputies are more than willing to address your concerns, but they need the information.

Cynical that’s pretty strong missing an opp. to kill someone. The problem is with parents, or lack of parents. If they were taught at home instead of street or gang taught, sure would help soon. I know how you feel, but I also hope that you never get that opp. to kill anyone. I do think you should defend yourself and family. I just think that having killed someone that it would be hard for a person to live with. A good loving person that is.

“Not even considering the risk that comes with gunfire around teens, why would you wish the death of a child on the conscience of a LEO?”

You surely must not have read the same story I did above:

“The problems started a little after 12:30 Monday when deputies responded to the area of Wegner Avenue where a couple of teens were reported to be threatening other kids with a gun.”

I don’t wish to see anyone, teen or adult, die without having their life right before God, but you have to know that these kids already had a gun and were threating another couple of kids. The world has changed consideraby since I was a teen and parents would severely discipline teens for things, not nearly as serious as this. But there does come a time when we have to defend ourselves, our families, and our homes. I hope he can be “rehabilitated”, but in the meantime, I have my gun, loaded, and I intend to protect myself, whatever that takes……

Yes, he was wrong, but may be there is a mother that does not know what little jonnie has been up to. Where she can now get a hold of him and straighten him out the old fashion way.

Sorry cynical, you may be a bleeding heart liberal who believes in rehabilitation of scum but I’m not.

I believe in swift and permanent judgement at the human level.

If it is the ones I see everyday driving past pace pkwy they are on skate boards in the middle of the street and won’t move over until you are within a couple of feet. Then they give you the look like why should I move for you. It would be best if the deputies would patrol the area more often but the real responsibility lies with the parents. Where are they at and what kind of punishment will be given by them?

  16. Cynical on January 19th, 2010 9:53 am

“Too bad the homeowner didn’t shoot first and ask questions later. A missed opportunity!”

A missed opportunity to KILL a kid?

    That’s just STUPID.

Not even considering the risk that comes with gunfire around teens, why would you wish the death of a child on the conscience of a LEO?

Don’t we have enough men with guns carrying PTSD on their shoulders around here without adding one more?

    Thuggery can be cured.

    Death is permanent.

What’s the point. because he is a teen (but old enough to know better) they will slap him on the hand and let him go. The next time he may kill or rape. They laugh all the way to the police station.
