Century Cold Weather Shelter Closes; Others Are Open In Escambia, Santa Rosa

January 9, 2010

The cold weather shelter in Century has closed, but others shelters are still open in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

On Thursday and Friday nights, the EscaRosa Coalition For the Homeless had opened a cold weather shelter in Century’s Habitat Building  (the former Carver Middle School) on East Pond Street. But due to low utilization, the shelter has been closed. Officials are prepared to reopen the shelter if the need arises, according a release from Escambia County.

Escambia County cold weather shelters are open at:

  • East Brent Baptist Church, 4801 North Davis Highway (operated by Red Cross)
  • Waterfront Rescue Mission on Main Street, Pensacola
  • The Salvation Army on North S. Street

Shelters in Santa Rosa County are open at:

  • Ferris Hill Baptist Church located at 6848 Chaffin Street in Milton
  • Billory Baptist Church located at 8162 Stillwater Cove in Holley

Persons utilizing the shelters are asked to bring pillows, blankets, personal toiletries and any prescription medications.

In reference to the closing of the Century shelter due to “low utilization” …it is hard to notify the needy by word of mouth. I know we made phone calls to neighborhood church members, and customers to ask them to pass the word around when we received the notice of the shelter opening late Thurs afternoon.

If the Town of Century would formalize a shelter plan and advertise it via media, and flyers perhaps once people know that it’s there then they will use it. There’s no doubt the need is there…it’s just difficult to get the word to those truly in need.

It’s about time a shelter open in our area. There should be an organized plan for shelters in each community,I.e. Walnut Hill, Bratt, Byrneville, and Century.

I noticed in Milton the other day that they open cold weather shelters when temp is 40 degrees and below. There needs to be a plan for shelters in the northend of the county , all the time. People need to know where the shelters are, and when they are open.

Good start…but we need an organized plan!
