Call Him Mr. Personality: Update On Orphaned Donkey

January 13, 2010

The donkey orphaned when his mother was shot by a Cantonment teen back in May continues to do well.

Kyle Mason Driver started an 11 month, 15 day sentence last week for shooting the mother donkey. [Read more...]

Panhandle Equine Rescue volunteer Lindley Paxton Barden took over for JB’s mom, keeping the days-old donkey inside her house, sleeping next to him and caring for him round the clock.

Now Barden has officially adopted JB, and changed his name to Burrito — Spanish for little burro.  She provided this update:

jb11.jpgBurrito is now eight months old. And although he remains small in stature, he is HUGE in personality! He is in all ways a donkey, as stubborn as they come. The cold weather has really brought out the prankster in him; he will cock his head and look me in the eye, even as he tries to bite a chunk out of my coat sleeve.

He loves breaking the ice in the water buckets, but also enjoys terrorizing his mother! To make (or should I say help) him behave, you have to make him think that acting good is HIS idea . He has taught me more about being wily, yet patient, than any animal I have ever known.

He still lives in the stall-and-paddock area with his bunk-mates, the Cow Boys, but a change for him is coming. I am now double-fencing four acres, to be inhabited by Burrito, Bobbie and Charlie Brown, and the two hogs and three dwarf goats (also PER rescues). The gang will still sleep in their stalls at night, but during the day Burrito will have some new friends and lots more room to run and play!

What a funny boy! How great that you are able to help all those needy animals. The world needs more people like you in it. Give that little Burrito a hug from all the animal lovers on the North end to let him know that not everyone up here lacks respect for God’s creatures and will shoot at anything that moves!

Thank God to ppl like you for loving god’s creatures and being so gentle and
kind, I wish I could meet you.
Everybody around here kills everything that moves.
Hunting Day and Night. I have been shot at and so has one of the
neighbor ladies husband and 5 year old child, and their dog was
    poisoned.
I was begining to think no one up here loves animals.
I guess I just don’t live by the right ppl.

You have a kind heart and I am glad this donkey found his way to you. You have been a good mom to him in place of the natural mom he should have had. Wonderful job..caring for young orphaned animals can be quite a challenge and requires alot of time. You are a wonderful lady. God Bless You.

What an adorable Donkey! I’m so glad to see that he’s found a loving home, especially after the tragic death of his mother. I’m sure he’s so happy.

To Susan Davis, please do not insult Burrito (ha)…he is just adorable…so thankful that there are caring humans for innocent animals and children…God surely intended for there to be angels on earth such as Ms. Barden

Aw he is so adorable, It is so good of Lindley to have taken over and to take care of Burrito; he looks like he is so loveable. Thanks so much for sharing his photos with us…

I would kiss that donkey right on the nose! He is so cute! It amazes me how people can be so cruel to god’s creatures. So glad he has a great new “momma” to care for him. You go, girl!

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE ON BURRITO. ANYONE WHO HAS EQUINE FRIENDS KNOWS THAT THE COLD WEATHER WILL BRING ON THE LONG HAIR OVERNIGHT. HE LOOKS HEALTHY AND HAPPY.

  15. FYI on January 13th, 2010 12:31 pm

I think Burrito is adorable! Thanks to Burrito’s human Mommy for taking such good care of him and loving him. I bet he doesn’t come inside your house anymore though, even if he wanted to! :-)

Cute pictures, especially the one on the front. Though I must admit, I thought it was a story about democrats at first.

  17. Lindley Paxton Barden on January 13th, 2010 10:59 am

Hi—Burrito’s Mom here! For a note on the “needs grooming”: It doesn’t matter HOW MANY times (a day or week) that I clean up my little donkey, he looks like that nasty picture again within hours! He is just like a young boy . . . if he can find a mess (spilled water/mud, Cow Boy “pies”, anything), he will ROLL in it. (Although I didn’t send William any of B’s pictures illustrating his more “basic” instincts, I do have a lot of them!) So I really do look forward to Spring, when his long baby hair will shed out and he might stay cleaner!

I spit my coffee all over my monitor when I saw that picture on the front. It so ugly it’s cute, so cute it’s ugly. Kind of looks like that Miley Cyrus my kids like.

  19. Cunningham Family on January 13th, 2010 8:42 am

    What a CUTIE!

  20. Roll Tide on January 13th, 2010 8:38 am

  21. Roll Tide on January 13th, 2010 8:37 am

Is is just me, or does that smile at the camera picture in the middle look like Donkey on Shrek got a bleach job? Just sayin.

  22. jennifer on January 13th, 2010 8:37 am

    To whitepunkondope:
He is not an ugly critter…..he is a precious sweet donkey baby! Obviously you have no love for animals. You are ugly for the way you speak of J.B.

  23. River Rat on January 13th, 2010 8:35 am

Mr. Personality is not one ugly critter! He just needs to be groomed and right now it is to cold for it.

  24. whitepunknotondope on January 13th, 2010 7:19 am

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a donkey with such long hair.

Will he maintain his white coat as he gets older?

  28. Butterfly on January 13th, 2010 4:40 am

That is so precious, thank you for all the work you’ve done to bring him this far!
