Homeschooled Kids & Company visited the West Florida Railroad Museum in Milton recently.

Once a fully functioning train depot around the turn of the century, now stands a historic museum offering our group a look into the past. We received a guided tour through a 1951 L&N freight car, a 1934 Frisco caboose, a 1951 Pullman boxcar, and ending with a ride on an outdoor 1-1/2 inch scale model railroad.

hskids11.jpgThe bridge tender’s house contains a functioning HO scale model layout of the Milton Railroad Service as it once was around the 1940’s. The group enjoyed watching the numerous trains move along the track while noticing the tiny details in the scene. Some of the kids noticed a tiny scale model of a person swimming inside of the water tank used to refill the steam engines.

The cargo loading side of the depot is full of relics such as original conductor’s caps, railroad signs, track repair tools, baggage trolleys, fire suppression bulbs, and lots more. The passenger side of the depot is full of antiquated treasures like a telegraph machine. We ended our tour with lunch in the 1929 L&N Dining car and a trip through the gift shop.

HK&C would like to thank the volunteers, who operate the West Florida Railroad Museum, for spending the afternoon with us, especially our tour guide Mr. George Wilson. The museum is celebrating it’s 100th year anniversary with a festival on October 17th and 18th. They will host heritage vendors and exhibits, a Civil War Reenactment, historian Mr. Raymon Melvin Turpentine, basket weaver Mr. Ned Wenick, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida, and many more. Admission through the museum is based on a tax-deductible donation to support the museum. This would be a great outing for the whole family and railroad enthusiasts. For more information call (850) 501-6249 or visit www.wfrm.org.

Child Porn Sentencing Delayed For Former Century Correctional Sergeant

October 5, 2009

Sentencing has been delayed for the former Century Correctional Institution sergeant that pleaded guilty to federal child pornography charges.

blackpauledward.jpgPaul Edward Black, 42, of Century, entered the guilty plea in federal court back in July. He now faces a term of up to ten years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a lifetime of supervised release. He was scheduled to be sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Casey Rogers, but the sentencing was continued until mid-November after a motion was filed by Black’s attorney, Thomas S. Keith.

Keith told the court in a motion to continue sentencing that Black is undergoing counseling at Cordova Counseling as a condition of his release. About a month ago, according to the motion, Black’s lawyer asked the counselor to provide a detailed evaluation of Black to possibly be used at the sentencing hearing.

Black’s motion asked that sentencing be continued until October 19 to allow the doctor time to complete the evaluation report.

Deputies seized a laptop computer, desktop computer and 56 CD’s from Black’s residence while he was at work at the Century Correctional facility. When sheriff’s investigators later interviewed Black at CCI, he admitted to searching the Internet for child pornography, according to federal court documents, and admitted to specific search terms that he used such as “teen”, “lolita”, “PTHC” and “Bambina”.

“A forensic review of his electronic media located images and videos of child pornography on his laptop and desktop,” federal court documents signed by Black state. “A review of the compact disks (CD’s) revealed the same.”

Arrest Warrant Issued For Century Man After He No-Shows In Court On Indecent Exposure Charges

October 5, 2009

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Century man who failed to show up in court on charges that he showed private body parts to three people — including two underage juveniles.

newtonronaldberlan.jpgRonald Berlan Newton, 48, of Blackmon Street, Century, was due to appear before Circuit Court Judge Jan Shackelford on one charge of indecent exposure and two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior by a person over 18 on a victim under 16 years old. He was released on $21,000 bond.

When he failed to appear, the judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

Newton was arrested September 2 after allegedly exposing himself to an adult female and two female juveniles. Newton, according to the arrest report, approached the woman and asked for change for a $20 bill. As the woman went to get the change, according to the report, Newton, who was dressed in a white robe, exposed himself. When questioned by deputies, Newton denied the accusations against him.

Anyone with information about Newton  is asked to call the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at 436-9620.

Fish And Wildlife Officers Cite Deer Depredation Permit Violators

October 5, 2009

Last week, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties worked a week-long detail targeting violations of the agency-issued deer depredation permits and the illegal taking of deer at night with a gun and light.

A deer depredation permit issued by the FWC allows farmers to kill deer out of season to reduce severe or persistent damage to valuable crops.

Eight officers and three lieutenants worked until midnight each night checking nine deer depredation permits and 18 hunters.

The FWC issued two citations for possession of untagged deer removed from a permitted field.  Two citations were issued for hunting license violations on the permitted field, and another 13 warnings were issued for various violations of the deer depredation permit restrictions.

Officers also checked an additional 55 users near activated deer depredation permitted fields resulting in one arrest for DUI, two arrests for taking deer at night with a gun and light and two arrests for operating a vehicle off a named or numbered road in a management area.

The FWC did not release the names of those that received citations.

MOPS: Mothers Of Preschoolers Tackle Mommy Issues

October 5, 2009

Diaper changes, runny noses, sleepless nights, first steps and learning to use the potty are just a few of the common threads that bring a group of moms from Atmore and North Escambia together twice a month for a group called MOPS.

MOPS — Mothers of Preschoolers — is for women with children from birth through kindergarten.

“It’s a time when your children are being taken care of by other loving people and you get some amazing mommy time,” said proud MOPS member Angela Attalah of Bratt. “We eat, visit, listen to a speaker, have a discussion time about the speaker’s topic, and then do a creative activity. The speaker will talk about practical things in your life, everything from budgeting to dealing with depression.”

Topics can range from those runny noses to fun things to do with kids on rainy days, handling mommy anger, meal planning, coupon shopping and more.

Children are welcome at MOPS meetings; they are involved in MOPPETS, a volunteer children’s department serving children from birth through 11. There is also a homeschool classroom for children 7-11.

MOPS of Atmore meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.; the next meetingMeetings are held at the Grace Fellowship Church on Highway 31 in Atmore. For more information, contact Janalyn Pomeroy at (251) 937-5793.

Deputies Seek Help Solving Molino Burglary, Finding Stolen Guns

October 5, 2009

Sheriff’s investigators are asking for the public’s help in solving a Molino burglary in which several guns were stolen.

crimewatch.jpgLast month, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to reported burglary at mobile home on White Ash Road in Molino. The victim’s neighbor called deputies to report that the back door of the mobile home had been pried open; the neighbor was watching the home while the victim was out of town.

During the burglary, a gun safe containing several guns and a flat screen television were stolen.  According to a police report on the incident, crime scene investigators attempted to recover fingerprints from the scene, and they were able to observe fresh tire marks from the back of the mobile home to the road. It was raining heavily at the time the crime was reported, so deputies were unable process the tire marks behind the trailer.

A Remington rifle,  SKS assault rifle,  Beretta 12 gauge shotgun, AK47, SK rifle, Colt .45 caliber pistol, Marlin rifle and the gun safe that contained the weapons were among the items reported missing.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call  Crime Stoppers at 433-STOP or the Escambia Sheriff’s Office at 436-9620.

Thousands Pack Annual Jay Peanut Festival

October 4, 2009

jay-peanut-festival-06.jpg

Thousands of people attended the 20th Annual Jay Peanut Festival  Saturday and Sunday at Gabbert Farm in Jay.  The weather was great as people packed the festival on Saturday, but rain put a damper on the event Sunday.

jay-peanut-festival-12.jpgThe festival featured something fun for everyone including arts and crafts, antiques, inflatable rides, rock climbing wall, pony rides, hay rides, train rides and much more. The Gabbert’s 1930’s Farm Museum was also open for tours.

There was plenty of food available…kettle corn, BBQ, hamburgers, roasted corn, apple dumplings and more.

And, of course, peanuts were the star of the festival, and this year there were plenty of green and boiled peanuts as well as fried, roasted and candied peanuts.

The event is dedicated to the memory of Melissa Caroline Gabbert, who died of cancer in 1990.
