NHS Quarterback Club To Meet This Afternoon

April 19, 2009

nhsquarterbackclub.jpgThe annual meeting of the Northview High School Quarterback Club will be held Sunday afternoon.

The group will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday in the gymnasium’s weight room. Officers for the 2009-2010 year will be elected.

The following was submitted by NHS Quarterback Club member Joey McCall.

When I think about some of the great organizations, clubs, and teams that I have been privileged to be a part of I can’t help but think about the elements that made them successful: Leadership, Purpose, Direction, Participation, and Dependability. There may be more but without any one of these, the team will never reach its full potential.

For the past several years the quarterback club has struggled to attract and maintain membership. If I was to solicited feedback as to the reasoning for this lack of participation I suspect I would get a multitude of answers. However, one reason I doubt I would ever get is that parents do not want to do what they can to help provide the best experience possible for the athletes of Northview High School that participate in football and other sports that the quarterback club supports. I venture to say that most of my responses would be more of a personal nature in which feelings about faculty, coaching staff, play calling, player placement, or player playing time would be at the forefront of people’s thoughts. However, the quarterback club’s primary purpose is to support the needs and issues of the team.

We have good people in this community that have always worked hard to support athletic programs in our schools and in our community. Golden Eagle and Blackcat pride burn in our hearts and minds as memories of what true school spirit looks like and how it can unite a community. But now, Chief pride is what should stimulate us to get involved. We have an opportunity right now, to put together our own “Stimulus Package”. A package that will bring pride back to Northview football, a package that will provide needed equipment, training, and travel for our team, a package that could influence decisions and change, and most importantly a package that can ultimately etch into the minds of our kids memories that will last a lifetime much like the ones you and I enjoy and relive every opportunity we have.

Please join us in supporting our kids, our school and our community. Join the quarterback club on Sunday, April 19th, and become involved.

Regards,

Blog: Have You Seen Susan Boyle? You Can’t Judge A Book By…Well, Just Watch The Video

April 18, 2009

If you’ve missed the TV news or all the email forwards the past few days, you might have missed Susan Boyle.

susanboyle.jpgWho is Susan Boyle, you say, and what does she have to do with North Escambia? A few days ago she was an unknown, simple looking woman from a village in Scotland that’s about the size of North Escambia. Today, she’s been on every news show because of a surprise performance in Britain’s Got Talent, an American Idol like show across the Pond.

The crowd laughed and Simon Cowell, a judge on both American Idol and Britan’s Got Talent, rolled his eyes when Susan first took the stage. Judging the book by the cover, as the old saying goes, Susan’s performance was going to be laughable. Jumping to conclusions will come back to bite you sometimes.

When Susan Boyle opened her mouth, it was nothing short of amazing. Enough describing it…watch the entire by clicking here to visit YouTube. We at NorthEscambia.com wanted you to hear it and join the millions that have heard and been amazed Susan Boyle.

And by the way…we know that most NorthEscambia.com readers are American Idol fans. We can actually see our traffic drop on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when Idol is on, with little spikes during the commercials. So go ahead and laugh at Simon.

Unemployment Continues To Rise; 19,000 Out Of Work In Escambia, Santa Rosa

April 18, 2009

Florida’s unemployment rate jumped to 9.7 percent in March 2009, the highest since 1975. That’s just one-tenth of a percentage point higher than last month, but nearly double the number of people out of work from a year ago.

unemploy.jpgIn Escambia County, the unemployment rate for March was  9.5 percent, or 13,115 people out of a job. In Santa Rosa County, the unemployment rate was 8.5 percent, or 5,865 people.

Statewide, 893,000 were jobless out of workforce of 9,210,000.

State officials said stimulus money was working to improve the job outlook for unemployed Floridians.

“More than $1.5 billion in federal stimulus funds are flowing into our state to assist unemployed Floridians,” said Agency For Workforce Innovation Interim Director Cynthia Lorenzo. “These funds are providing enhanced unemployment compensation benefits and expanding job placement and job training programs to help bolster the economic recovery of Florida’s families.”

Florida’s workforce system is benefiting from $165 million in federal economic stimulus funds that the state and local workforce boards are using to provide training for unemployed Floridians and help businesses improve their workers’ skills. Those funds include $43 million for youth services, including summer jobs for several thousand young people statewide ages 14-24.

The Agency also has available nearly $1.4 billion in federal stimulus funds for Florida’s unemployment compensation program including increased benefits for unemployment compensation recipients. Payments of an additional $25 weekly in Federal Additional Compensation were initiated on March 19, 2009. To date, $55 million in Federal Additional Compensation has been paid to Florida’s recipients.
