FWC Officers Rescue Stranded Dog From Escambia River Log Jam
December 21, 2009
Two officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission managed to save a small dog that had become stranded on a long jam under the Escambia River Bridge on Highway 4.
Officers Steve Hoomes and Gary Ridaught were patrolling near the Escambia River at Fisher Landing in Century. The officers heard barking from the river and investigated. They located the source of the barking under the Highway 4 Bridge where a large number of logs had created a log jam. A small dog had somehow become stranded on the logs piled against the bridge pilings.
With the recent rains, the river was extremely swollen and the current was swift. There was no way the dog could swim the distance to shore. The officers sought the assistance of a citizen who arrived at the boat ramp with a small boat. They maneuvered the boat to the log jam and “rescued the very wet, but grateful dog”.
The officers were unable to determine how the dog wound up stranded in the middle of the Escambia River.
The dog was not wearing a collar, so after a quick drying off, the officers took it to the Humane Society for assistance in locating the dog’s owner or finding it a new home.

You do a great job.
When I first got on here, I didn’t know it was just one guy doing
this, I thought I had somehow got into something that was
a small paper off of pnj.

We will have another story about Lulu coming up in the next few days. We’ll have a photo too. Stay tuned…
Tears…..with a smile all over my face.
What a story.
I write and would love to make a short story about Lulu and all the
ppl who took part in her success to find a loving home!
?
Thank you Gina. We tried our best to get her so we could make sure she was taken care of, but could never get her to come to us. You make my heart proud. Take good care of her, and give her lots of love, because she is a sweetie.
Our family adopted this little Yorkie-mix Saturday. Her new name is Lulu. She is very friendly and loving. She is getting along well with her sister, our Miniature Schnauzer, Snickers. I am grateful for the Officers who rescued her, the citizen who lent the boat and the Godwin’s for feeding her and making her shelter. I just wanted everyone to know Lulu’s happy ending.
If the dog in question is the one I think it is, it has been down at the river for at least a month. My husband and I and a few more people have been feeding her. She was very skiddish, and we could not get her to come to us when we called her. My son even built a tepee type house for her to get in out of the cold and rain. I am so thankful she has been resuced. I hope someone will adopt her and take real good care of her Thank you gentlemen for rescuing her.
i live off hwy 4, right by there, and i am missing my dog.. she’s a small female pitt. my other two dogs go to the river all the time, but she didn’t come home with them. how do i find out if this is my dog.. escambia county in pens. or brewton?
great story, makes my heart smile! job well done, by all!..thanks, william, for sharing.
The dog may have been swept away from a home upstream. I hope the owners will read this. It will bring some joy for the Holidays to have the dog back (I’m assuming).
