Major Flooding In Atmore

December 14, 2009

flood10.jpg

A flash flood warning is in effect for Escambia and North Baldwin counties in Alabama. Atmore’s entire downtown area has been blocked off due to flooding.

There is major flooding in Atmore tonight and most of Atmore is impassable. Highway 21 and Highway 31 are both shutdown.

People have been rescued from homes and cars as a result of the flooding.

All Atmore firemen and volunteers have been called onto duty to stand by due to the flooding condition.

The National Weather Service says very heavy rain is falling across the area from a series of thunderstorms training across the area. An additional two to three inches of rain may fall across the warned area during the warning period.

The line of showers is also causing heavy rains to fall in the northwest corner of Escambia County, Florida, near Nokomis.

Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road. When encountering flooded roads, make the smart choice…turn around, don’t drown.

    puddin,
i just made my way from the BP there at medical park dr and hwy 31.. i went to main st, to craig, and on to rockaway creek road.. i couldn’t see far down church but it didn’t look that bad. sgt jimmy jay said the standing water was beginning to recede in that area anyway.

puddin, it was flooded over there about 5:30 this afternoon and it has rained a lot more since then. Hopefully by morning some of this river will be gone.

Atmore needs to fix this problem. I was coming down 31 from Bay Minette several weeks ago and when I went through the light towards United Bank and the water was just standing and I only knew this when I hit the water. There is NO drainage in the area. Just standing water. The water was this deep all the way past Chuck Stevens car lot. I am just glad that nothing happened to my car. Atmore or the County or whover is in charge of this road needs to do something before someone gets seriously hurt.

Do you know where 31 in Atmore closes? I have to go to work at Masland and I live close to the hospital?

Six cars under water in front of Westside Salvage junkyard water was almost to the roof , and the state wants to send more water to that culvert when they build a turn lane to the carpet mill? It can’t handle a bad rain now.
