Escambia Students To Receive Health Report Cards This Week
December 14, 2009
Children in Escambia County Schools will receive a student health report card this week.
The health report cards contain the results of in-school health screenings for students in the first, third, sixth and ninth grades. The students in those grades were screened for Body Mass Index (BMI), vision and hearing; and six graders were also screened for scoliosis. In the case of vision and hearing results, parents were notified earlier this year if their child’s results needed further physician evaluation.
Among the 41 schools that will send home school health report cards this week are the North Escambia area schools Bratt Elementary, Molino Park Elementary, Jim Allen Elementary, Ernest Ward Middle and Tate High. The remaining schools are expected to send home their student health report cards in January.
The BMI on the student health report card is a measurement of body fat based on height and weight and is used to screen for health problems associated with an unhealthy body weight. The measurement of students’ BMI in first, third and sixth grades is required by the State of Florida.

If you don’t like government control, get them out of the government schools.
I 100% agree, the schools should be more concerned in teaching our children instead of worrying about their weight. I too take my child to the doctor and that is why I pay the doctor not the school to send me a report…
I send my child to school to learn. I send my child to the doctor when there is a concern about weight or anything else. It is not the schools place to tell me my child is too fat or too skinny, that is what I pay the doctor for. The school district should stop worrying so much about weight and figure out a way to actually teach these kids.
I think this is a great thing. Your child doesn’t have to share their information. Bullies will be bullies with or without this report – you need to talk to the administration (and parents with the school as mediators), and if that doesn’t work go to the school board. If the bullying is that serious, don’t “come close” to pressing charges, do it.
Many parents don’t notice their little angels may not be healthy – little angel behaves so much better when they get the extra Coke or they dont’ have to argue over McDonald’s vs a home meal with veggies.
Last year, my child brought her health report home which showed she had a slightly high BMI, which I already knew. What I found ironic was that they were given a ‘treat’ for bringing the signed report back to school. The “treat” was….you guessed it….candy!! Maybe it should have been a carrot?
Obese kids grow into obese adults. Obesity causes numerous health problems and conditions. These Health Report Cards should be used by parents in the same manner Academic Report Cards are used, as a measure of the success each child is acheiving and as a tool to demonstrate where each child needs improvement. If you want your child to stop being picked on because of their weight, take the steps necessary to encourage your child to become more fit and healthy instead of complaining about how they are being treated.
i think these r STUPID!! Lets see how bad we can make our kids feel about thier wieght!!! Trust me..we know if our kids are over wieght or not….why does it have to go in writing??? Kids have enough to worry about these days!!!! by doing this..kids are getting picked on more…which has lead to a lot of Bullying..to the point i wanted to beat up 5th graders(KIDS R 2 CRUEL) thats where the schools need to focus on..i have came very close to “pressing BATTERY charges on kids for messing w/MY kid……MY OPINION!!!
