Updated: A Little Snow For North Escambia?

December 4, 2009

There’s a slight chance we’ll see some snow in the North Escambia area Friday night into Saturday morning. If you are willing to travel a few miles north or northwest, you might get to see a few inches of the white stuff on the ground.

We’ll start will rain Friday night, but forecasters say that it could become mixed with sleet or snow by morning in the North Escambia area. The further north you are in North Escambia, the better your chances of seeing a little white stuff. But don’t expect it to stick to anything; forecasters are calling for any snow that falls in our area to melt as soon as it hits the ground.

But 1-3 inches of snow is being forecast by Saturday morning in a line west and northwest of I-65. A winter storm advisory has been issued as close to North Escambia as north Baldwin County. The map above shows the winter storm watch.

Forecasters caution that any shift in a cold front or an approaching low pressure could greatly alter their forecast. We’ll keep you updated on NorthEscambia.com with the latest on our chances for seeing a few snowflakes.

It would be nice to see a little snow. My little girl is a year and half old, and she is very bright. I would love to see her react to snow. I’m sure my Lizzie-girl would look at it, just as she looks at everything else that interests her, and say, “Wow!” This would be so fun! I would like to see a White Christmas, but I’ll take any snow we can get!

Several people emailed me today asking for the link to a story we did in March of this year. That’s when we took off with the radar running in the car on a “Snow Chaser” mission to Montgomery. Here’s the link:

William, Thanks for putting up a weather site. Since we are so close to Ala. most of our weather is like theirs. It’s good to be able to look a couple of days ahead.

It does NOT need to be freezing at ground level for it to snow. The happy temperature Ski Area Operators out West look for is 35.5 degrees. It’s what we call “Cement” snow. Wet and icy. Below freezing is what we call “Powder”. What determines snow is the cloud temps aloft. The higher you go,the colder it gets. I have seen it snow many times at 36f degrees.

This cold snap is quite a relief from the heat and humidity of Florida summers.
