Century To Begin $371,000 Drainage Improvement Project

The Century Town Council voted Monday night to add $230,000 to a $141,000 grant for a project that will improve drainage in an area south of the old Century High School.

The complete $371,000 project was designed prior to Hurricane Ivan, and it sat “shovel ready” since that time.  The project will improve stormwater  drainage in an area bordered roughly by Hecker Road to the north, Mayo Street to the west, Baptist Church Road to the east and a concrete ditch between Mayo Lane and Church Street to the south.

Acting on an opinion from the town’s attorney, the council voted to use the $230,000 from a fund that contains $1.6 million from half cent sales tax and local option sales tax funds. The town requested the attorney’s opinion to make sure the money could legally be used for drainage projects.

I’m not sure how the town decided the area that needed help with drainage but water runs through yards between Church Str and Front Str. Also, we have a problem with water backing up and coming in the back of the pharmacy during heavy rains. We put in a sump pump which helps a lot, but still floods sometimes. Many of the drainage ditches between Pinewood and Mayo and
Mayo and Jefferson seems to have never been cleaned real good since Hurr Ivan. The area definitely needs help with drainage but the area needing help is much larger than shown on the drawing.

GOOD Start … Town Council and Mayor of Century. This is a project that many can benefit from in this area as it has been needed for a very long time. If they do a good job it will last for fifty plus years and will probably be the base for more drainage to route to from within the city. So make sure this will be a job well done from the start.
To the Citizens of Century, we will have some inconvenience to deal with but it will be worth it in the end. So be prepared and I am sure the workers and the Project overseeres will thank you.

Heres a tip for Century officials look across the state line. There is a pile of culvert stacked behind our business that will never be used. the town of Flomaton squandered 3/4 of a million dollars to install this “free” pipe under the town.then the state of Alabama still had to do the majority of the work.It wouldnt hurt to ask because in the ground it works alot better ,on top of the ground its nothing more than eyesore.By the way happy birthday northescambia and keep up the great news coverage.Thanks,A.W.
