(With Photo Gallery.) A Molino woman and a McDavid man were injured in a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 29 and Molino Road tonight.

Deborah Archer, 57, of Molino, was westbound on Molino Road in 1996 Chevrolet pickup when she ran a stop sign and traveled into the path of a 2003 Chevrolet driven by John McCall, 46, of McDavid, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. McCall’s car struck the driver’s side door of Archer’s pickup. Archer was not wearing her seat belt and was  ejected from the driver’s side window of her vehicle, according to the FHP.

Archer was transported by LifeFlight to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola in serious condition. McCall was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital where he was treated for a broken collarbone and released. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The FHP says charges are pending against Archer.

The accident shut down  Highway 29 northbound for over an hour while the wreckage was cleared. The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the call.

I have a petition in place at Scott’s Pharmacy to have a traffic light installed at the intersection of US 29 and Molino Road SR 182. Please either stop by to sign the petition, or you can sign it online at:

    http://www.gopetition.com/online/32294.html

Online, you fill out the information yourself, and at Scott’s Pharmacy, you just sign the petition and it is optional to give your e-mail address, address, or phone number. Please don’t sign both of them. We are at the top of the list with DOT for something to be done at this intersection. I have been in touch with them for a couple of weeks now. Please pass the word, I will also be putting one at Fran’s diner, with her permission. Eager to sign here you go, it’s online and at Scott’s Pharmacy in Molino, as there was another wreck there today. That is 3 wrecks in less than 3 weeks. Please take time to sign online or at Scott’s Pharmacy. I appreciate all signatures, as something needs to be done about this as soon as possible, before more people are killed, crippled for life, and spend weeks recovering in the hospital. It is time for a change in Molino, people fly through Molino going 80 miles an hour in a 55 mile an hour zone. This will change things, but we need many signatures. Thanks for taking your time to sign.

Since Hwy 29 in Molino is a federal highway maintained by the state. I would suggest the best chance of getting anything done would be to contact State Representative Greg Evers, State Senator Durell Peaden and U.S. Congressman Jeff Miller. These are the people that Kevin White would have to go to, to get anything done, since each of these men have some degree of control over every penny that DOT gets, they will be willing to listen to them more than anyone else. Why not contact them yourself, since they will be contacting you in a few months asking for a vote.

    Thank you BRY!

I am the closest dwelling at this intersection. I live on the West side of 29. First off, there have been 2 wrecks at this intersection in the last 2 weeks. Secondly, I have begged to have the speed limit decreased prior to Chestnut Road, as they have many accidents there also. We need a 45 mph speed limit from 29 to Chestnut, and we need a light. I will get a petition started probably won’t do any good, as this is a state road. I would like you all to not particulary blame Deborah, she has cancer. I don’t know if she can wear a seatbelt or not. Let’s all pray for her, as she really needs it now. We need some help here Mr. Kevin White, you know you can do something about this. I have seen numberous elderly people cross into the median, and just sit there, as they are scared to pull out. We need a light and we need the speed limit decreased…PERIOD on the West side. The speed limit is 45 on the East side, but not the West side. I have grandchildren and dogs, and people speed by my home, knowing they can’t stop when they reach 29 heading east. Most of them have it floored when they turn off of 29 heading west. It is a racetrack here now that the road has been repaved. I have offered to let State Troopers and LEO’s sit in my drive, they can make a lot of money off tickets, as I was almost hit, turning into my driveway, not long ago, a truck decided to pass me, my blinker was on to turn left, as I was about to turn, he floored it, and I saw him in my side view mirror, and didn’t turn, or I would have been T-Boned. I will see if Scott’s will let me put a petition there, for all to sign, it would save a lot of lives and the heartache families go through, when their loved ones are in ICU for weeks and even months recovering. Again, everyone pray for Deborah, I am, and will continue to do so. She needs a lot of prayer…..

  5. Speed and Concerned on November 20th, 2009 9:19 am

Years ago I bugged the Transportation Department to not post the speed of 65 through Molino as they were going to do. I live on 29. At that time my daughter was getting on the school bus then. I told them we (parents) might as well be putting our kids on the buses on the interstate because if they posted 65 these people would not be able to stop in time to see the flashing red lights on a school bus. Our driveway is just beyond a hill (as we call it) and too many people coming over it would just speed by the bus as my daughter would be getting on it. Then the News Journal got involved and interview myself and a friend of mine who also lived on 29 with the same problem. So to make a long story short, the Transportation Department thought it over and then posted the 55 speed limit and put up a bus sign right before my driveway so people would be more cautious. I still see people not even slowing down when the speed limit changes from 65 to 55 entering Molino. I have seen so many near misses at the intersection at Molino Rd and 29. I know how hard it was for me to get them to NOT post a 65 speed limit through Molino and I hope that it won’t be as hard for all that want a traffic light in this intersection. You have to keep on them eveyday. Its best to talk to the Transportation Engineers. At least they listened. Call them everyday and complain as much as you can. But I’ve been told that putting a Signal light there would make too much congestion on Molino Rd.
I wander how much the Molino Fire Department has getting on 29 when they have a call.. Good Luck

  7. Just Me on November 20th, 2009 6:11 am

If people not stopping for stop signs cause the accidents, what makes you think they will stop for a red light?

  8. Deni on November 19th, 2009 8:30 pm

Does anyone know how Deborah is doing?

  9. Lynnette on November 19th, 2009 3:25 pm

Please note there is a caution light at this intersection, not just a stop sign. I don’;t remember what year the light was put in but it doesn’t seem to help. There are several accidents there about every year. I don’t know if a full traffic light would help or not. Might slow down traffic a little bit.. The caution light certainly doesn’t.

    REGARDING:
“The State can put a stoplight in Cantonement so the trucks can get out on 29 and not have to wait at the mill. It is about time they put one at this intersection to try and save lives and injury to the people of this end of Escambia County.”

I suspect the reasoning related to the traffic light for trucks leaving the paper mill involved the fact that pulpwood trucks were pulling out anyway and drivers weren’t always noticing them in time to avoid hitting them. This way the only ones hitting the trucks are those too involved in their cell phone conversation or texting to notice the huge truck right in front of them and the red light above them.

David thinking driving would be safer if everybody paid attention

I’ve lived in Molino for over 28 years and repeatedly tried to get a light put at that intersection. One person calling everyday won’t change a thing but if several people jump in and call our district 5 man we might get something changed. we also need lights at Hwy 29 and Hwy 97 (atmore cut off) in molino and Barrineau and hwy 29

I was behind two trucks speeding up Highway 29 this afternoon. They seemed to be racing a semi truck. I was doing 60 in “downtown” Molino and was being passed like I was sitting still. I am not suggesting that speed was a factor in this accident, because I have no clue about that. I am just stating that the speeding on Highway 29 is out of control. Troopers used to monitor pretty well, but they have probably cut back due to budget cuts as well. I don’t think it is only the Molino Road crossing. Barrineau Park road is bad as well, but it is more open and you can judge alittle better the speed of the vehicle approaching on Hwy. 29. I worry about the school buses that have to cross Hwy 29 and I REALLY worry about the kids who are on the school buses that stop on the Hwy to pick up kids. I am going to start calling *FHP when I see the aggressive speeders.

  16. Deni on November 18th, 2009 6:35 pm

I agree with you Mr. Rodgers. We all get a wandering mind sometimes. And we’ve all had close calls. There is a caution light there. And there is a good speed limit in place. And the troopers seem to stay on top of speeding drivers. I see them pulling people over there all the time. This woman obviously made a huge mistake. We only know just the small details, there is probably so much more to her story. I’m sure she realizes her mistake at this point. As for the intersection, I think it’s just become too busy…and it needs a traffic light. BTW I disagree with the fact that it would congest Molino Rd. Besides, I think alot of us are willing to be patient and deal with something like that at this point.

  17. seatbelts on November 18th, 2009 6:15 pm

Look at the car. Look at the truck. Which one looks the worst? Seat belts save people. I hope when people look at this they will wear their seat belts. I hope that the lady in the truck will be O.K. also.

  18. Ruthy on November 18th, 2009 4:54 pm

I live in Molino, and pull out onto Hwy. 29 every day with my Suburban full of my school kids, and two friends’ kids. I HATE this intersection, but have no choice! The absolute worst time is when it is foggy. You are totally at the mercy of everyone that is FLYING up and down 29. And many times they do NOT have their lights on. Not too long ago, I was inches from being CREAMED by a silver car with NO LIGHTS on, doing at least 65 mph or more. How are we supposed to see them??? You cannot, so you look 4 or 5 times both ways with your windows down and radio OFF and LOOK, LISTEN, and then PRAY and smash the gas to quick get into the middle and hope no one else just did the same thing without their lights on and meets you in the middle! Someone start a petition!!! The county apparently had enough money to REPAVE all of Molino Road WEST, BUT NOT ENOUGH TO PUT UP A TRAFFIC LIGHT TO SAVE THE LIVES OF US TAXPAYERS?????? Hmmmm????

  19. Mr. Rodgers on November 18th, 2009 4:47 pm

I glad to hear that most people aren’t really blameing.
We are so busy this day and time that our minds wonder. We think since it hasn’t happen, it won’t happen. I know for a fact I am guilty of a wondering mind. By the grace of GOD I haven’t had an accident.
It is a bad intersection, always has been. Maybe a caution light would help Commish. Robertson.
I hope all involved are healing. And counting their blessings.

  20. Obey the Traffic Laws on November 18th, 2009 1:08 pm

First of all I hope both will recover soon. We all established this is a bad intersection and has been for years. When I moved here 21 years ago I called and asked why there wasn’t a light at this intersection, and was told it would leave Molino Road to congested. Meaning the lights would be set to have it green for the North and South bound traffic longer than on Molino Rd west and east. Residence would not be able to get out of their driveways or the side streets.
I thought it was a good idea to put lights there, that maybe just maybe it would slow down this traffic on 29. But putting a light there may be worse also, with trucks going so fast down the incline they may not be able to stop in time for a red light and then what, a horrible accident then.
I can’t imagine anyone running a stop sign at this intersection just knowing the traffic and the speed that some drive. Your talking people going at least 65 at a posted 55. I have seen people do it and think their nuts.
I don’t know what to suggest about this problem other than people need to pay attention. Its bad enough that people at the stop sign never yield to the right of way to people who are turning onto Molino Rd. I am beginning to think that No one is this area knows what yield means.
I would like to know also if she was wearing a seat belt like someone said, how in the world was she ejected? Was it by the impact?
My prayers go out to both of them and hope for a speedy recovery.
Lets all just slow down and pay attention and Look up the word YIELD in a driver’s manual.

  21. seatbeltsplease on November 18th, 2009 12:40 pm

Note: driver of the car was wearing seat belt —- released from the hospital!!

  22. Gobblez on November 18th, 2009 11:05 am

It’s very simple. Lights and signs are some of the most basic and straightforward things that you learn as you start driving…Yet people will still disobey them, and when people do that, others get hurt or killed. Until cars and trucks automatically stop on their own at flashign red lights, red lights, stop signs and yield signs, people will continue to run them.

You can put up a strobe light, flashing red light, stop sign, and officer in a police car with his hand in the HALT position, and it wont do a bit of good if the person is texting, talking on the phone, intoxicated, or otherwise distracted from the basic task of driving.

  23. whitepunknotondope on November 18th, 2009 10:18 am

“I say it’s time our whole community comes together and does whatever it takes to get this red light we need so desperately. ”

Red lights and stop signs don’t do any good when people like Archer blatantly disregard them.

King and Walnut Hill Resident, I totally agree! My teen started driving on Monday. I came up on this accident just as the crashed cars came to a rest. As I sat there waiting for them to clear a way for me to move, I was wondering how I could convince my daughter to never use that intersection. Way too many accidents and close calls.

  27. sad on November 18th, 2009 2:49 am

Well its like bluff springs crossroads they lowered the speed and put flashing lights up there and people still fly through there my husband almost lost his life there in 03 and we went to school with a girl who did I’m with the red light there should be one in molino and bluff springs and for the ones who text and drive look up on you tube texting while driving bet you won’t do it again it is a reenactment and it really happened

  28. payattention on November 17th, 2009 10:57 pm

I saw the accident at Molino Road and Hwy 29 and hoping that both individuals will be O.K. Everyone says that we need a traffic light at that intersection, but my question is what wrong with the flashing lights they do work. All of us living in Molino knows that’s a bad intersection therefore everyone needs to pay attention to the rules of the highway and there would not be accidents like this. In other words quite talking on cell phones and texting when behind the wheel of a vehicle. I do not know the cause of this accident other than one thing was for sure the person that ran the stop sign did not have there mind on where they where going or where they were at.

  29. Walnut Hill Resident on November 17th, 2009 10:39 pm

This is a very very bad intersection on Hwy 29. My wife was involved in and accident there over 20 years ago. Same thing happened to her someone ran the stop sign and she hit the other car. I hope that the people that were in the wreck will be ok. The State can put a stoplight in Cantonement so the trucks can get out on 29 and not have to wait at the mill. It is about time they put one at this intersection to try and save lives and injury to the people of this end of Escambia County. We need to ask a few questions of our Leaders on what is more important lives or trucks not having to wait to get on 29. I for one will be calling some of our leaders again tomorrow to find out what is wrong with putting a light there. I use to travel this road everyday going to work and it is the most dangerous intersection on that stretch of highway. I have had to slam on my brakes a few times there myself. No signal lights north of Cantonement until you get into Century. They made turn lanes for the mill north of Cantonement so the trucks could get in and out better BUT They CAN’T PUT A LIGHT AT THIS DANGEROUS INTERSECTION. I don’t have any problem with the mill or the truck drivers getting the lights or the turn lanes they were needed. If you feel there should be a light at this intersection make the call and express your concern. We talk about it on here and to each other but, until we pick up the phone or send an e-mail to the right people nothing will get done. I hope you are your someone you know will not be the next person hurt or killed at this intersection. Let you voice be heard LOUD and CLEAR in our State Capitol.

  30. Ashley on November 17th, 2009 9:34 pm

I hope all involved recover well! I had just came through this intersection turning on molino rd around the same time as the wreck. I will keep all in my prayers!

  31. KLKing on November 17th, 2009 9:32 pm

I have lived in Molino for 38 years, and have seen alot of lives lost at this intersection. It is such a shame that you have to wonder how many more innocent lives have to be lost before they will finally grab a clue and put up a red light there. I am a mom of 2 teen drivers, and one soon to be teen driver, and I worry myself sick about my teens driving in this intersection. I’m sure there are alot of parents out there that feel exactly the same way I do. The Highway 29 & Molino Rd. crossing has took the lives of so many experienced drivers much less our inexperienced ones. I say it’s time our whole community comes together and does whatever it takes to get this red light we need so desperately. Wether it be getting up a petition and everyone signing it or I would even go as far to say if that didn’t work, maybe we could get the community together and raise the money ourselves. What do ya’ll think? The safety of my teens and loved ones are worth it!! How about yours? My prayers go out to those involved and their families.

  32. Kevin B. on November 17th, 2009 9:15 pm

There have been so many accidents at this intersection, I really wish that the state would put a signal light there. I hope every one involved has a full and speedy recovery.
