Police Ask For Public’s Help In Finding Double Shooting Suspect

October 14, 2009

Atmore Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a man they say shot two people — including a juvenile shot in the back.

jonescharlesfranklin.jpgCharles Franklin Jones, 21, of Atmore, is wanted in connection with the shootings Saturday night. At 9:09 p.m. the Atmore Police Department received calls that shots had been fired on Jones Street in Atmore.

“The responding officer was one block away when he arrived at the scene where he found four males running south on Jones Street,” said Director of Public Safety Glenn Carlee. The approaching officer discovered that two of the four males had been shot.

James Hudson Jr., 20, suffered a gunshot wound to his upper leg. He was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital and then transferred by helicopter to the USA Medical Center in Mobile. The second victim, a juvenile, was shot in the back. He was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital and transferred by helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. Both victims were released the following day.

The four males were walking on Jones Street when Charles Jones approached Hudson. “Jones then allegedly shot Hudson in the upper leg, as the remaining individuals began to run, Jones then fired his weapon three more times striking the juvenile in the back,” Carlee said.

“Investigators have spoken with Charles Jones by telephone where he indicated that he would turn himself in to police, but has failed to do so,” Carlee said. An arrest warrant has been issued for Charles Jones for assault first degree.

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Jones or that has information on the incident is asked to call the Atmore Police Department at (251) 368-9141.

Most all of you are exactly right, WE all have become more accepting of behavior that would have never been tolerated by our parents or grandparents. The level of disrespect that is shown toward any kind of authority nowdays is due to the ACLU and organizations such as these taking the “TEETH” away from teachers, policemen, prosecutors, and the like.

If a Teacher was to spank a child for acting up, blame the teacher.

If a Policeman arrests little “junior”, (imagine bobbing head w/ hands on hips), “I know my baby didn’t do THAT!”

I have heard parents gripe and complain about this and that and say, “My kid won’t go to THIS school or play in THIS league or play THIS sport because THIS ethnic group has taken it over. Not so, enough parents not allowing their kids to go to THIS school, or play in THIS league, or play THIS sport and look what happens. WHO’s LEFT!

Quit giving your schools, leagues, sports, or whatever activity away, and become ACTIVE in PTO, Quarterback Clubs, Band Boosters, ect. Don’t sit on the sidelines and allow a lack of interest in the activities of your own children cause you to lose them to MTV, XBOX 360, and Wii, not to mention drugs or crime!

We are seeing the beginning of the collapse of OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE.

Let’s turn it around, one kid at a time. START WITH YOUR OWN!!! Aren’t they worth it?

    MINE ARE!!!

I think some of this is a lot of disrespect too by todays youth. I HATE when I see kids wearing their pants UNDER their rear ends. They have to tighten their belts really tight to keep their pants where they are. I was out in a store the other day and a boy in front of me had his whole rear sticking out only covered by his shirt. If he had of bent down, i would have seen his underwear…now, who wants to see that? It’s not cute, in fashion, or anything else, it’s disrespectful to others, especially when your out in public, but they don’t care, some rap star started this and the kids think it’s cool. If a girl went out like that, she’d probab;y be arrested for indecent exposure. Respect also starts at home. I have heard young kids be so disrespectful to their teachers and parents and grandparents, it’s awful what these kids today pick up on.IF they are taught manners and respect at home, we may have a better society today, but in Atmore and surrounding areas, a lot of kids are being raised by their grands….and kids certainly don’t have any respect for them, so they run over them and do what they want. sorry to rant!

It seems everyone is so ready to place the blame on police and elected officials when crime rates soar. They want to know why police don’t stop people hanging out on the street corners late at night; it’s because when they do the public cries “racial profiling”, and accuse the police of harassing certain people and even try to sue the police departments. They want to know why the cities don’t increase patrol; it’s because when they do the public starts complaining that the police are being too aggressive, writing too many tickets, too “gung-ho”, etc. They want police protection, but when the police arrest their babies and grandbabies that are committing the crime, suddenly the police are the bad people because, Lord knows, “MY baby don’t do no wrong”. People want to increase the size of the police departments, but few are willing to pay the increase in taxes to finance it. People are quick to call police when their husband is beating the crap ut of them, but suddenly change their mind when they drag his sorry butt off to jail. It’s true that many (most, I’m sure) people arrested are “repeat offenders”. Judges are releasing them early, or are reluctant to incarcerate them because of prison overcrowding; are we willing to pay more taxes to build more prisons? Citizens, like you and I, are called to serve on juries and grand juries. But most are reluctant to indict or convict people unless the police have CSI-Miami like overwhelming evidence, which is virtually non-existant here in the real world. On TV, crimes are solved in one hour. Here in the real world, it can take days, weeks, months, or even years (see the Bruce Day story on this site) to solve. Most people are not willing to give the police time to solve cases. I know police officers are human and they screw up at times, and we are more than ready to crucify them when they do, but most are doing the best they can do with what we are willing to give them. The court system has severely tied their hands, they face public scrutiny on EVERYTHING they do, the public generally is reluctant to help them or give them information (which is the real way crimes are solved) because they “don’t want to get involved”. Even when they defend themselves as in the Danny Williams incident, the media and public are ready to pounce on them. The bottom line is that we, as a society, have created this monster of a crime problem, and it is we who must live with it. It is we who have tied the hands of our law enforcement, and it is we who must deal with the consequences.

    to muns///

Read the Atmore Advance fron page.People are now going to counsil meeting about crime and violence.People here are settled and dont want to move. Its not easy to pick up and just leave when you have family, jobs, home etc here. Why not fix the problem so we can live peacefully.Gas stations in the past have been robbed, people purse have been snatched at grocery stores, and now wild bullets are going threw innocent people homes.I dont know where you live but ATMORE has gotten to be dangerous and the paper proves it.

  6. muns1992 on October 15th, 2009 12:30 am

My gosh!! If all you people think this is such a dangerous place to be why don’ t you move . I work in Atmore, drive home late at night, and I have never in ten years been afraid. I have stopped at every gas station that is open at that time of night and never felt threatened. Before Winn-Dixie started closing at ten p.m.,I did all my grocery shopping at night to keep from having to come to town before work, and wouldn’t hesitate to do so again.

Hey Billy Boy! I live in Brewton and I take offense to you calling this town “dangerous”. I will be the first to admit that there are crazy people in Brewton but by no means is it a dangerous place to live. I in the Sowell Rd vacinity and I am just as comfortable there as I would be in the richer neighborhoods.

CURFEW IS NEEDED IN ATMORE.IN THE ATMORE ADVANCE MAYOR SHELL SAID THEY HAVE UP THE POLICE OFFICERS WELL THEY NEED TO STOP THIS KIDS/GROWN PEOPLE FROM STANDING UNDER LIGHT POLES AT NIGHT FOR NOTHING,HANGING AT CORNERS FOR NOTHING.ITS OKAY IF YOU WANT TO SIT IN YOUR YARD OR ON THE POARCH BUT A GANG OF PEOPLE AT A STREET CORNER IS NOTHING BUT TROUBLE.ENFORCE THE RULES,GET SOME OF THESE PARENTS INVOLVED,MAKE THE PROBATION OFFICERS DUE THIER JOB AND GET THESE CRIMINALS OFF THE STREETS OR GET THEM SOME HELP.WHEN I WAS GROWING UP WE COULDNT WALK THE STREETS LIKE THESE KIDS DO.I SEE CHILDREN 10 AND UNDER WALKING THE STREETS IN THE DAY AND THE NIGHT.WHERE ARE THE PARENTS.I KNOW WE AS PARENTS HAVE TO WORK AND CANNOT KEEP UP WITH THESE KIDS EVERY MOVE BUT GO BACK TO GIVING THEM SOME RESPONSIBILITIES AFTER SCHOOL,YARD CLEANING HOUSE CLEANING,HOME WORK,CHURCH,HELP OLD IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.INSTEAD OF DOING SOMETHING POSITIVE THESE KIDS ARE BEOMING YOUNG PARENTS,USING AND SELLING DRUGS,DPOPPING OUT OF SCHOOL,STEALING AND FIGHTING,DRINKING AND DRIVING,CARING GUNS AND KNIVES,IN GANGS AND MAKING OTHER PEOPLE SUFFER.WE AS PARENTS,FRIENDS,FAMILY,NEIGHBORS,OFFICERS,PRINCIPLES,TEACHERS,ETC NEED TO TAKE ENFORCE THE RULES,STICK BY THEM, AND SOME OF THE VIOLENCE WILL STOP EVERY WHERE

  10. GR8DAD on October 14th, 2009 3:58 pm

What is happening all over is that WE, as a society have become SCARED and COMPLACENT. We live in a kinder, gentler world of political correctness and “I don’t want to get involved!” We take the paddles away from teachers in the schools, WE disagree with prayer in schools, WE take GOD’s name out of the “Pledge of Allegiance” and off of OUR money and WE expect OUR offspring to be respectful, law abiding citizens through OUR example. Look at OUR movies, entertainment, and the like, and the next time WE see our kids acting like, dressing like, or listening to something that says it’s COOL to live the “THUG LIFE” …cut it off, throw it out and here’s an idea… BE A PARENT!

You can turn alot of this around by changing the attitude of one kid at a time and alot of US need to start in OUR OWN HOUSE!

  11. an observer on October 14th, 2009 2:12 pm

they could have parents walk their own neighborhoods at night, ARMED of course……but who on their right minds wants to walk the streets of atmore at night???? Guess we will have to go back to vigilante days to show these thugs who is in charge

Hello! has no one else noticed that the picture is from 2007. Maybe if he was punished the first time he would not be a repeat offender.

  13. atmore on October 14th, 2009 11:49 am

I AGREE WITH YOU LAINE.IF HE WAS RUNNING WITH NO WEAPON,WHY WAS HE CHARGED WITH ASSAULT.They get off free, that is why the keep repeating the same crime and more.

  14. Laine on October 14th, 2009 11:24 am

An arrest warrant has been issued for Charles Jones for assault first degree?? Why not attempted murder? He shot one in the back.

What in the world is happening around here lately? And why did the APD wait so long to put this information out to the public? I just don’t understand.

  15. atmore on October 14th, 2009 10:34 am

Atmore has gotten to be a bad place to live.I am 32 years old and i remember my grandparent being able to leave the doors unlock and windows up while they go the the grocery store or to the doctors office. Now you have to pay for alarm systems, dont sleep at night, sit with a loaded gun or a knife beside your bed bc you are afraid that a young child or drug addict is going to break into your home.now people are so bold they break in on you while you are home, taking a risk that no one ever thought of before. Some of this is some of the parents fault. Most parents when the police come out they lie and say that they were at home or that they didnt do it,knowing they did.Im not saying that parents are to be blamed for what thier kids do, but some of us need to be responsible for our kids actions and show some tough love.I rather see my child locked up or on probation learning a life lesson rather than to be visiting a grave site.People are affraid for their life and they are taken every measure to protect themselves.A neighbor’s kid broke into our home years ago, and a friend of his told on him.Me and the police went to his home and got 2 of things that were stolen and the police did nothing, his family knew he had broken into our home and others, for years but no one push the issue..Finally,he took drug to the prison and got caught, did a year, got out, broke into some one else home, got caught with drugs on him and now he is locked up again. When does it stop!!!We as a community should come together and try to stop the violence so we can live peacefully again. No one wants to see thier kids locked up or dead, but what do you think is going to happen if they keep doing things like this. You can run but the sad part is you cannot hide for ever.Parents if you know your kids stole something, take it back to the owner, the police station, make your child pay for it themselves. If they were involved in a shooting, robbery, drugs etc, get them some help, turn them in what ever it takes. To Mr Jones, turn yourself in,accept the charges,do the time and think about what you have done DO BETTER.

Billy Boy: I’m am already a member of the NRA & I know how to use a gun.

  18. Billy Boy on October 14th, 2009 6:44 am

Escambia County Alabama, Atmore, Brewton and Pensacola are dangerous places. How much violent crime death and murder do we hear about in those places now? In north Escambia and Santa Rosa Countys we are in the middle where it is kinda quiet. Time for all of us to join the NRA, arm ourselves and defend our land against outsiders.

Grandpa from Brewton that shot the guy in his house will be doing shootin’ classes down at the community center next Saturday.
