There are only 4 variaties of harmful snakes in Florida: Rattlesnakes, coral snakes, water moccasins (cotton mouths), and Copperheads.

EMD, your snake story was soooo funny!! i could just picture it……my bro-in-law flies an ultralight…a one seater…can you imagine feeling a clammy snake slithering up your pant leg, while coasting high above walnut hill, just enjoying the scenery??…..petrified, he couldnt let go, couldnt move his legs, couldnt jump….what a feeling, huh?…..ill tell you, he didnt waste any time getting that thing landed……thankfully, they both lived…… but, it still cracks me up to this day! (it wasnt poisonous, but, he didnt know that)

Four of us were in the truck on Highway 164 last year, when just west of Lee bridge a coachwhip snake cross the road ahead of us. This snakes head was in the grass on the south side of the road, and his tail was still across the yellow line. I think the official record is 8.5 ft. for a coachwhip, this one was a 10 footer at least.

Does anybody else remember the story PNJ did probably 15 to 20 years ago about the man driving down Gulf Beach Hwy and saw a snake that was big enough to stretch ACROSS the whole road. So what did the man do, but back his stationwagon up to the snake and try to first PULL the snake in but once it started getting dark (it was at dusk) the back of the stationwagon looked close enough to a pit that the man could then PUSH the snake into his car. After he got the snake into his car the snake would then coil up at him at which point the man would slam on brakes to break the snakes coil. Then the man simply took the snake home with him. Rule of thumb…when I see a snake I’m going to run over and over and over it until it is dead, I WILL NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PUT IT IN THE AUTOMOBILE WITH ME!
    PS
Never assume you know what you are going to do if a snake ends up anywhere near you because you don’t, I always stated I would have a heartattack. Well a water moccasion ended up in a fishing boat with my husband and I and somehow neither of us had a heartattack or ended up in the river with snake after my husband tossed him over board.

I recently found a 7 1/2 ft. long, totally intact rat snake skin in my garage. I didn’t realize the skin they shed covers even their eyes. But the skin; mouth, eye bubbbles and all…. all the way to the end of the tail were there……..First time I have found a perfect one. I met this snake when he was about 4 1/2 ft. long. He is my free roaming rodent critter getter. The day I met him was a day when I raised my garage door from inside, not knowing he was up on top of the roller tract (I guess). He fell hard, landing on my right shoulder. I couldn’t even scream, and was way too close to see if he was poisonous. So, I instantly grabbed him with my left hand a flung him like a frisbee. He survived to startle me a few other times, but I’m kind of glad he’s here. I do not think he is dangerous as are rodents beneath or in the walls or attics of ones house.

I have two inside cats and we found a snake in our house so that really doesn’t matter. But we put out moth balls and no more snakes.

There was a HUGE python in a Miami Daycare reported on WEAR lastnight. My sister has killed 3 small, white and brown snakes in her home, one of which was in her washing machine in Cantonment. We’ve also encountered a nearly 6-feet black snake in our back yard when doing yardwork recently. It unusual how many there have been this year. Also, there was a small rattlesnake in an unnamed school in Cantonment this year as well. Health Department was called in and no other snakes were found on the premises. Do not remember any years before when they’ve been so prevalent!

I’ve run over 5 or 6 reddish/greyish snakes with a pattern on them with the lawn mower in the back yard. No clue what kind they are.
