And They’re Off: Evers Leads Senate Race Dollars

October 14, 2009

With the Florida Senate District 2 election 10 months away, the campaign coffers of the three candidates continue to grow. The candidates have also begin to spend money on advertising, sponsorships and supplies. And one candidate has spent over $3,000 on food, travel and hotel rooms at places like the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota.

Two House members are hoping to move up the Senate chambers and seat being vacated by Rep. Durell Peaden. With 10 years in the Senate, Peaden is not running again due to term limits.

Republican Reps. Greg Evers and Dave Murzin are in the race, as is  Walter “Mike” Hill, a Pensacola insurance agent. There could more candidates in the race by election day; qualifying does not end for several more months.

district2map.jpgCampaign finance reports due Tuesday show that Evers is leading the fund-raising race by large margin. As of September 30, Evers reported that he had raised  $162,220.63. Murzin reported $46,279.01, and Hill had raised $28,095.

By September 30, Murzin had spent the most money — $16,217.52 — in the bid for the District 2 seat that includes all of two counties and most of five others, including the northern three-quarters of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Most of Murzin’s expenditures were for advertising, sponsorships and office related expenses. His largest expense to date was $1,100 for “video production”.

Evers spent $13,977.87 by the end of September, mostly on sponsorships, advertising and supplies. His largest expenses were $2,000 to sponsor rodeos in Baker and at Tate High School. He paid $2,000 for a web site and purchased $7,500 worth of campaign cards.

Hill spent  $6,917.01 during the same period.  The majority of Hill’s expenses were for airfare, hotel rooms and travel. His campaign finance reports show $3,129.68 in food and travel expenses. Hill spent the money on airfare to and hotel rooms in Georgia, Sarasota, Tallahassee and Destin. While in Sarasota, Hill paid $641.93 for a room and food over a three day period at the Ritz Carlton. Other travel and food expenses included $591.25 for catering from Nancy’s Haute Affairs in Pensacola and $552.40 to Delta Airlines.

    REGARDING:
“Just because you are against something, you are willing and anxious to deny the rest of us an opportunity to vote?”

While I personally don’t care about these efforts to do away with historic Pensacola and just turning it all into Escambia County Municipality or whatever they want to name it, the fact remains that the concept has been voted on over and over and turned down over and over. Perhaps it should just be on every ballot until it somehow passes and then kept locked in since some seem to reject the Will of the People.

Repeat: It has been voted on and rejected already–several times.

    AND

“Aren’t anarchists ones who try to run things without voting! Are you really anarchists? Or do you know what the word means? ”

Actually, NO, anarchists are people who believe in NO government of ANY kind. That is what the word means. Those who reject a vote are antidemocratic, they don’t accept the vote of the people, thinking them superior to the “great unwashed” as they sometimes call us.

monarchy is rule by one person, can be good or bad, good if it is me, bad if it is someone else

aristocracy is rule by an elite group, such as old white male billionaires if they wasted their time ruling, in the south at one time it was plantation owners, in the north it was the company bosses

theocracy is rule by god, although usually by someone who claims to speak for him rather than the real thing

oligarchy is rule by a small group, often called junta or good ole boys network, depending on your location and language

ochlocracy or mobocracy is rule by a mob, also known as pure democracy, it is most famous for being the form in which the people of Athes told Socrates to drink hemlock because he bugged them. The next week they changed their minds but it was a day late and a dollar short, so they executed the ones who brought up the matter in the first place.

kleptocracy is rule by thieves, no comment implied although it is quite common and–in fact–leads to the bumper sticker:
AREN’T YOU DON’T GET ALL THE GOVERNMENT YOU PAY FOR?

There’s lots more and some of them are kinda fun, but anyway, voting and not wanting to have your vote ignored and told to vote over until you vote in a manner acceptable to the “powers that be” is not anarchy, it is simple desire for respect as a human

    David for clarity and respect

I think the ones who are against Greg Evers simply because he sponsored a bill to look into the consolidation issue are missing the point. Just because you are against something, you are willing and anxious to deny the rest of us an opportunity to vote?

If the bill is as rotten as we think it will be, then it will fail miserably.

Aren’t anarchists ones who try to run things without voting! Are you really anarchists? Or do you know what the word means? Am I missing the point?

Lots of fodder for you to feed on. Go for it.

    Billy Boy is right…
Evers sold us “North enders” out to the downtown crowd for nothing more than re-election dollars! By sponsoring “All for One’s” consolidation commission, Evers created a monster for us; one that we have to deal with, and it’s one that should have never been started to begin with, especially by him since he is our representative (or is he really representing downtown). With the consolidation move, Evers has earned my NO VOTE!

As I was once told, “the world is run by those who show up”. If we do not get the common person off their butooties and get involved everthing our parents and grandparents have sacrificed is going down the drain. There is still hope, but it is fading fast.

Everyone needs to get their neighbors and everyone they know registered to vote and stay on top of the issues! Which ever side they fall on!

So hopefully there are enough members on the committee that will try their best to establish a rational procedure if the consolidation goes through. I along with you Billy Bob, do not want this, but if it does I want to know that we had a hand in establishing it. A voice at the table I guess you would say.

  5. Billy Boy on October 14th, 2009 8:07 am

Ok you are right J. He did not sponsor a bill for consolidation. He sponsored the bill for the political action committee All for One to create a study commission to present a plan for consolidation. Had no one sponsored the bill for the special interests of the political action committee, there would be no chance we would vote on it. But good ole Evers did the dirty work for the PAC.

Farmers are GOOD PEOPLE. No arguing that. But they are a very small number of our senate district — another small special interest group funding Evers pockets.

We need someone that will represent tens of thousands of district residents, not someone aligned with the farmers that number just a few hundred. I have nothing against farmers, and I am certainly for protecting our rural lifestyle. But Milton, Pace and Crestview are not rural. They are i nthe district also. Who represents them?

My thougths against Evers are not an endorsement for either of the other candidates. I knew Murzin sponsored some internet bills that were good, and Hill stays at the Ritz Carlton and flies around on Delta with campaign money. That’s about all I know.

I hear ya J. The laws of common Sense has been long gone in local politics in these parts. From County to City. I agree we need someone in office that understands what we need here in the Northend of the County. We haven’t seen it and it is in need. A long time comming…………..Now that the City has fumble this up in Pensacola and never view us at anything. Now all of a sudden they wants or{Need} US( meaning northend ) to become part of them. Something about this Deal STINKS or smells fishy.LOL They want the County to Bail them out. So I want to see what these guys are proposing on how to handle this situation.

  7. J on October 14th, 2009 7:02 am

Please get your facts straigt Billy Boy, Evers DID NOT sponsor a bill for gov consolidation. HE DID SPONSOR A BILL THAT SET UP THE STUDY COMMISSION on consoidation. Big differnce there. Hoping full well that it cannot pass. I can assure you he is against as much as we are.

And hopefully a North Escambia FARMER will run for the office, someone with common sense like Greg has. Someone who appreaciates and respects our rural way of life. OR should it be someone who has moved into the area from afar and knows everything about our local politics, NOT!!

Im all for a new political party, No more democrats or republicans. I am for the party of COMMON SENSE. Because it sure has been lost in all our political endeavors over last 20 years.

  8. Billy Boy on October 14th, 2009 6:48 am

Remember Evers is the one that sponsored the bill for government consolidation where we will all live in Pensacola.

All he cares about is consolidation and farmers. Has anyone EVER seen EVERS around north Escambia County or Century except for an even with farmers? He must stay in Baker and work on condolidating us into the downtown Pensacola crowd.

I must admit while I don’t know if I will vote for Hill or Murzin, I know I won’t vote for Evers. Maybe a good north Escambia County guy will run an we’ll vote for him.

    Hey William….why don’t you run?
