A driver that hit a power pole on Rockaway Creek Road near Atmore fled into Florida Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses described the vehicle as being a gold or tan Pontiac Grand Am or Grand Prix. The female driver hit the utility pole about 4:20 p.m. just north of the Alabama-Florida line on Rockaway Creek Road and continued south into Florida. Power lines were reported to be downed across Rockaway Creek Road, leaving an unknown number of residents in the area without power.

Officers from the Atmore Police Department and the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Department reportedly located the vehicle behind a residence on Circle Drive off Rockaway Creek Road in Florida. Florida authorities did not respond to the scene on the Florida side of the state line because they were never notified by Alabama of the incident.

Anyone with information about the accident should contact their local law enforcement agency.

Once again, as stated before, the story said that Atmore PD DID NOT CONTACT Florida authorities. That means Florida’s lack of Response was ATMORE PD’s fault, not Florida’s. That is, IF all the details are accurate, at least.

Rockaway Creek Rd is a known route for the youngsters that want to elude police from either state. Four wheelers, intoxicated teens, speed demons and all other houligans use this road at will to evade anyone that might try to invade their privacy. A stepped up patrol from Atmore and ECSO would be more than appreciated.

Jack I read the story and all that responded where the Atmore P.O. and the Escambia County Sheriff’s office of ALA. None of the ESCO of FL. where notified.

FL authorities did not respond??? Why???? Isn’t that still considered hit & run???? I have had someone do property damage when they crashed through our fence, only they were stuck and couldn’t leave. The individual who was on something tried to get us to help un stick her, but we knew better. No matter the situation, you should be responsible for your actions no matter how big or small. That certainly could have had a much worse outcome on Rockaway Creek Rd.
