Police Chase Ends With Flipped Jeep, Suspect Jailed

September 9, 2009

An early morning sheriff’s department pursuit landed a Century man in jail on multiple charges.

phiferchrisopher.jpgChristopher Angelo Phifer, 38, of Field Road Century, was charged with DUI, fleeing/eluding a law enforcement officer, registration/tag expired more than six months, driving while license suspended/revoked, threatening a public servant, two counts of resisting arrest, possession of weapon by a convicted felon and violation of probation He was booked into the Escambia County Jail on $17,750 bond.

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department report, Deputy James Gilman spotted a Jeep Cherokee occupied by Phifer at McMurray Park in Century at 12:20 am Sunday morning. When Gilman ordered Phifer to exit the vehicle, Phifer took off in the Jeep, according to the report.

Deputy Gilman gave chase, using his lights and siren as he pursued Phifer down Pond Street, onto Jefferson Street and onto Salters Lake Road. On Salters Lake Road, Phifer hit a washed out area in the road, according to the report, causing his vehicle to roll over. Phifer fled into a wooded area on foot, with Gilman giving chase, also on foot. Gilman tackled Phifer, the report says, and arrested Phifer with the help of deputies Jason Land and Scott Rivkin.

About 10 minutes after Phifer was placed in the back of Gilman’s patrol car, he told deputies he had pain in his arm. Atmore Ambulance was called to the scene, and Phifer was transported to Baptist Hospital where he was treated and released.

A search of Phifer’s Jeep turned up a .22 long rifle cartridge on the driver’s side floorboard.

At the hospital, Phifer told the deputy “Gilman I’m going to kill your a** and you know I have guns,” according to the ECSO report on the incident, and  that he intended to kill or put a hit out on Gilman.

Great job Deputy Gilman! It’s great what you’re doing in Century! But a little advise from someone who knows…maybe you should put your running shoes on and run down to Byrneville and catch all those thugs out there.

I pray that the threat on the officer’s life was taken very seriously!!!!!!!

I agree with wiser than u r only the part about how quickly these criminals are back out on the street. I wonder how many of you really know how messed up the system is I know for a fact a repeated offender for meth gets caught with materials to cook the crap and the state offers him a plea and so he takes it by the way it was only probation I cannot count the times he has been on probation just to continue to mess up his life and his kids life . and then I have seen first time offenders go to prison whats up with that ???

    Wiser than U,

I know that it’s their job to put those committing crimes in jail, but instead of bashing them that way, you should be realizing that they could always NOT be doing that. That’s the situation we had before, remember? If they are actually doing what they’re supposed to be doing instead of sitting around twiddling their thumbs, they DO deserve to be praised. They could have done just as little as the others and we’d be fussing about that. Instead they do their jobs and do them well and you still wanna fuss. Some people can’t be satisfied.

The problem is that they can only keep him so long. Sentences expire and criminals are released. Add those to the population of up and coming gangsta wannabes and it’s the same situation all over again.

It’s not the cops that let them go, it is the Judges.

It’s a good thing He (Phifer) ran in Century and not in Atmore! Over there He might have ended up with a bullet to the back of His head!!

  9. WISER THAN U R!!! on September 9th, 2009 6:30 pm

BORING…1 down, how many to go? It’s all the same as the previous arrests. The cops need something to do; so he’ll be released soon and arrested in a few more weeks, it’s just something the cops need to do to keep themselves busy on this end cause CENTURY IS A GHOST TOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look at all the people who were busted in MAY, most of them bonded out the next day and picked up again with NEW charges before they could even go to court for the charges they got in MAY… Think about it people the police are doing whatever’s possible to keep their paychecks coming..IF NO ONES COMMITTING CRIMES THEY’RE OUT OF A JOB.. STOP PRAISING THEM FOR GETTING DRUG DEALERS OFF THE STREET FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME…When the drug dealer goes to prison then and only then do they deserve their props..Give credit where credit is due and in this case it’s NOT….LMFAO!!!!!!!

Thank God-another THUG off the streets!!!

Amen to that Note!! If you have the money for drugs, alcohol and various other vices, you are not really broke!! Even if you are do not have two pennies to rub together, you have no excuses for bad behavior.

  12. Note on September 9th, 2009 12:40 pm

Thinker, apparently he had enough income to buy booze–or drugs–in order for one of the charges to be DUI. Low income or bad economy does not neccesitate criminal behavior.

  13. Thinker on September 9th, 2009 12:04 pm

This made me think about all those low income people, some without jobs at all right now, who won’t be able to afford to register their vehicles with the huge mark up. Look for more trouble regarding unregistered vehicles because in our world you HAVE TO drive to survive. But all that aside, good job Deputy Gilman, this one seems like an “insurgent” with his threats and attitude. What was he up to in that park while DUI?

  14. good job on September 9th, 2009 11:45 am

lets sing a version of that everly brothers song “Bye Bye Love” execpt this one is “Bye Bye Con” no more happiness, hello lonelyness, You are where you deserve to be!
good job deputies, one less on the street now, thanks for keeping us safe!!!

  15. John on September 9th, 2009 11:44 am

I’m not sure where to start with Mr.Phifer….
He needs to fire both his barber and his tailor.
That look he is sportin sure aint working.

Hat tip to the deputies for getting this guy off the streets.

  16. Century resident on September 9th, 2009 8:21 am

Deputy Gilman is one of the department’s finest. He’s is like an old bloodhound (even though he’s not that old). He would chase a guy to the ends of the earth to bust them. And everything is by the book.

Thugs everywhere have learned that Get-You-Gilman will put you in jail.

  17. citizen on September 9th, 2009 8:17 am

Deputy Gilman is one of the good ones on the force . A lot of times I am talking about the dirty cops and investagators with the sherrifs office and when I do know that Dep. Gilman is not included among that list he is what gives someone like me hope for our system..

  18. Molino Mom on September 9th, 2009 7:39 am

Bad boy, bad boys, what you gonna do when Gilman comes for you?

  19. Century girl on September 9th, 2009 7:28 am

Good job Deputy Gilman and to your backup deputies as well! Looks like we had atlleast three deputies on in our area last night…50 percent increase more than before Sheriff Morgan. Keep up the good work!

  20. Susan on September 9th, 2009 6:20 am

And you still want that tag renewed in Century?
