Playground Equipment Being Installed At New Bratt Park
August 27, 2009
Installation of the playground is underway at the new Bratt Community Park on West Highway 4. The playground and swings are not yet open to the public.
County employees are currently working to install the 8-foot wide, eight-tenths of a mile walking track around the perimeter of the 13-acre park, according to Joy Jones, director of Escambia County’s Parks and Recreation Department.
“We are just getting started, but we are going to keep it going,” Jones said recently of work on the park. The county is still waiting on one permit to be issued, she said, and then the work on other park features like the picnic pavilion will begin.
The park will also include two softball fields, a full basketball court and exercise and rest stations positioned along the track. The softball fields will not be lit for night play; in fact, the park’s hours will follow that of other county parks — sunrise to sunset.
The park is being funded with $200,000 in LOST (local option sales tax) monies set aside for the park’s construction.
Jones expects that park will be completed within six months.

We live on Ashcraft, which joins Bratt Road. We are very excited about the new park! Wonder if the county will ever pave these roads. It sure would make it a lot smoother ride!
That is wonderful to see! I’d imagine there will be insurance/liability issues to be worked out with the county, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the playground didn’t officially open until all of the other construction is complete. I do hope it opens soon, though. My kids will love this!
Heather — I’m not sure when the playground will be fully installed. It’s being installed by the playground company, I believe. The concrete was still wet yesterday when I took the photos. They will have to finish the install, let the concrete cure, get an inspection and all that kind of stuff. Then they will have to put in the wood chips or sand or whatever bouncy surface under it.
There’s not even an adequate driveway into the park yet; with a car, you’ll have to park on Bratt Road and walk into the park.
I’ll post another story when they take the caution tape off the playground equipment.
The park is expected to be complete with everything by early next year.
We are so excited to see this park being put in!! We couldn’t be more pleased! Now how about some sidewalks to and from the schools! That would be a great idea!!!
when can we start taking our kids to the playground area?
NIce. One piece of advice: use it as much as possible. In urban areas we push for parks near residential areas for if it goes unused for long periods of time it will become a problem. The more the activity the better. In fact if this park ended up with a small community of houses around it to reinforce its use the better.
