Slow Down: Alabama And Florida Troopers Start Major Blitz Monday

July 26, 2009

Beginning Monday, the Florida Highway Patrol will team with the Alabama Department of Public Safety and the Georgia State Patrol for a joint initiative to reduce traffic fatalities while increasing safety.

fhp.gifDuring the week of July 27 through July 31, the FHP will increase patrols on the roads throughout this region as a part of the multi-state safety campaign called “Take Back Our Highways”. The campaign includes Alabama and her border states of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, and will result in an increased number of law enforcement officers on the road.

“The goal of this effort is to save lives by targeting aggressive and dangerous drivers throughout the region,” Director of FHP, Col. John Czernis said. “If you are breaking any of our traffic laws, you can expect to meet a state trooper.”

During the week-long enforcement period, FHP will use all available personnel, including members of its Aviation Section, Contraband Interdiction teams and Special Programs, as well as Auxiliary and Reserve troopers to focus on aggressive drivers, impaired drivers, speeders, and drivers who fail to buckle up.

“Every time you get behind the wheel, you have a responsibility that must be taken seriously. All drivers and passengers should buckle up, pay attention to speed limits and avoid distractions to drive safely,” adds Chief Grady Carrick, Commander of the Northern Region. “This multi-state campaign yields results, and we are proud to join Alabama and her border states in this partnership.”

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles provides highway safety and security through excellence in service, education and enforcement. The Department is leading the way to a safer Florida through the efficient and professional execution of its core mission: the issuance of driver licenses, vehicle tags and titles and operation of the Florida Highway Patrol. I would like to see some extra attention paid by the DOT officers on the stretch of HWY 29 between Interstate 10 and the paper mill. Log trucks, cement trucks and dump trucks have little or no consideration for other drivers on this stretch of road. I witness them everyday driving side by side blocking both lanes of traffic like they are in some sort of NASCAR race. Mark my word, someone is going to die due to these driver’s negligence if something isn’t done soon. There are very few circumstances when these drivers should be driving in the left lane, much less right next to another big truck. DOT do something soon, our lives depend on it.

Probably not a bad idea, but i would also like to see our sheriff’s deputies be a little more careful…i was headed south on hwy 97 a couple weeks ago and i was nearly hit head-on by a deputy who was passing ON A DOUBLE YELLOW LINE, ON A CURVE!!! I don’t know if he was responding to a call or not, but he didn’t have his lights. I had my mother and my two little boys in the car with me. It was a disappointing incident to me because I believe that our law enforcement should be saving lives, not endangering lives.

If you think its bad here try Atlanta and the I-285 Speedway. Its got a 55mph Speed Limit but it seems everybody does 70-85mph on average. Its a nightmare.

On the other hand, I’ve got to drive home from Louisania on Wednesday. I guess I can slow down for a change.

Am very glad to hear this– should be done more often. I came close to getting killed on Hwy.59 in Foley one day by a little sports car that thought he was on the Indy 500.! This speeding is getting out of control , especially on Interstate 65! Thanks!
