“I can’t begin to describe how special it was for me tonight to be honored by a town that I love so much. This award came from the heart and that is what makes it so special,” an emotional Evers told the crowd at the Jay Community Center.

The special event was an opportunity for the community to honor Representative Evers and show their appreciation for his many legislative accomplishments. Excessive Heat Advisory In Effect

June 28, 2009

The National Weather Service in Mobile has issued an excessive heat advisory through Sunday evening.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a situation in which heat stress illnesses are possible. Heat indices this high can cause even the most physically fit to succumb to heat exhaustion or, even worse, deadly heat stroke.

Persons planning on being outdoors for an extended time are urged to consume plenty of liquids — especially water, wear light colored and loose fitting clothing, and to take frequent breaks from the heat in an air-conditioned room.

The best time to perform outdoor activities is during the early morning before 10 a.m. or during the early evening after 6:00 . Restrict Intake of alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.

Children playing outdoors should be watched for signs of heat exhaustion. Check on relatives and neighbors especially the elderly. Pets should be provided plenty of fresh water and shade and monitored frequently.

Have An Extra $389? That’s Your Share Of Escambia’s Debt

June 27, 2009

If you are citizen of Escambia County, Fla., your share of the county’s debt is $389. If the county were to ask you to pay your fair share of total county operations, you would need to write a $520 check.

Those numbers are based upon data in the Escambia County Comprehensive Annual Finance Report  released recently by the Clerk and Comptroller’s Finance Department for the last fiscal year that ended on September 30, 2008.

cafr.jpgDuring the fiscal year, government revenues dropped $14 million, property tax increased about $5 million, sales tax revenue decreased $3 million, other tax revenues were down $2.5 million, road transportation projects were  down $4.3 million and interest income decreased $5 million.

The county’s total bonded debt was $115,210, which is $389.23 per person. The bonds are secured by toll bridge revenues, tourist development taxes and half-cent sales tax money. There is no general obligation debt, meaning property tax revenue is not pledged to any of the outstanding bonds.

The total expenditures per person in the county equate  to $520.

Some other interesting facts from the Escambia County Comprehensive Annual Finance Report:

  • The Escambia County general fund had a 10 month operating reserve in an unrestricted fund balance.
  • The ratio of current assets to current liabilities in the governmental activities is 5.91
  • Approximately 16% of all the governmental revenue is received through grants
  • Property Tax revenue is approximately 72 percent of the general fund’s total revenue

Approaching Front Could Mean Rain

June 27, 2009

An approaching weak cold front could mean some relief from the heat and some much needed rain for North Escambia by Monday.

There is a slight 20 percent chance of rain today through Sunday, but that rain chance jumps to 60 percent by Monday as that weak cold front approaches the coast. The front will bring just a little relief to our oppressive heat and humidity, with daytime highs by Tuesday and Wednesday returning to a more seasonable 93 with slightly drier air.

Before the front arrives, expect highs around 98 on Saturday and Sunday.

Cantonment Man Enters Not Guilty Plea On Child Porn Charges

June 27, 2009

A Cantonment man who was arrested earlier this month on charges of possessing and promoting child pornography — including images with children as young as two — has entered a not guilty plea in Escambia County Circuit Court.

Michael James Whaley of Trailwood Drive in Cantonment was taken into custody by law enforcement officers with the Attorney General’s CyberCrime Unit and the U.S. Marshall Service’s Fugitive Task Force on June 3. He remains free on $12,000 bond set by Circuit Court Judge Joel Boles.

Whaley has entered the not guilty plea and waived arraignment. He is scheduled to appear in court again in September for a jury trial.

A tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Cyber TipLine indicated Whaley, 34, had placed images of child pornography on a photo-sharing website. Investigators executed a search warrant at Whaley’s home in May and seized four computers as well as over 200 CDs and DVDs. Whaley admitted to possessing and uploading the images found on the photo-sharing site, some of which were of children no older than two years of age, according to the AG’s office. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the execution of the search warrant.
