Local Student One Of 100 To Take Part In Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend

An eighth grade Carver/Century K-8 School student is one of just 100 young men selected to take part in the Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend this June in Dallas.
Arkelle Elliott was selected based upon a father-figure essay he wrote to take part in the program with comedian, actor and radio personality Steve Harvey. Elliot will attend the mentoring weekend June 18-21.
“Mrs. Harris encouraged me a lot,” Elliot said of his teacher Detria Harris. “I wrote an essay about what it was like to have a father figure.”
“He told me from the day he turned it in that he was going to pack because he was going to win,” Harris said.
The event includes a weekend of seminars and team building activities. The program is led by Harvey and is designed to build a foundation for young men, according to the program’s web site.
The Steve Harvey (pictured left) program “will expose young males to business professionals, athletes, celebrities and ministers that will assist them in focusing their hopes into dreams and transforming their dreams into reality,” the web site says.
The program is for young men from a family with a single female head of household.
Elliot and the other 99 program participants will take part in sessions to include “Tool Time”, “Style is Success”, “Handling Your Money”, “What It Takes To Get Into and Stay In College” and “New Ideas To Make Money”.

Sad to see them closing Carver/Century, especially knowing many of those kids will be transferred to Bratt. At least they can’t blame the kids from C/C for their current status:
At Bratt Elementary, the number of third grade students scoring at grade level on the reading portion of the FCAT dropped from 83 percent last year to 78 percent this year. In math, Bratt also declined, from 86 percent at grade level last year to 81 percent this year.

im very happy for you that you get this experience of a life time to give you the opptunity to be around young men and older is a blessing to have a man to be apart of your life is beautiful . im a single parent of a young man who i adopted and if i would have found out about this in time i no he would have summited a essay and hopefully he would have got picked for the mentor program its hard being a single parent raisung a young man out here but when i here that someone is taking an interest in a childs life i no its agod above and it is someone who cares so i no your essay was good and im gladf that you have amentor like steve harvey in your life and any other male role model that you will see so take what ever experience they give you abd knowledge and make something out of your life im proud of you enjoy your seld you are blesses
