Century Man Arrested For Failure To Appear In Bad Check Case

May 11, 2009

A Century man was arrested Saturday for failing to appear in court on a case involving 11 bad check charges dating back nearly two years.

ewingsamueldonald10.jpgSamuel Donald Ewing, 50, was arrested on 11 counts of failure of a defendant on bail to appear and booked into the Escambia County Jail. Ewing remained in the jail Monday morning without bond.

Ewing was originally arrested  May 15, 2007, for 11 bad checks totaling $324.01 written to Piggly Wiggly. The checks ranged from $24.99 to $41.03 each. He was found guilty on all bad check charges and ordered to pay restitution to Piggly Wiggly plus $200 in court courts.

Ewing failed to pay the court costs and restitution. He was sentenced to 60 days and assigned to the work release program, but he failed to comply with that order.

If Florida processed these checks the same way you scanned a debit card you most definitely would’nt have to worry about a bad check . It would let you know up front if the check was any good !

If Florida processed bad checks the way Alabama does,we wouldn’t have things like this happening.Taking two years for a store to collect their monies? Even a store as big as Piggly Wiggly suffers when this happens.Take a small Mom and Pop store ,amounts like this can be disasterous. In Florida,if the checks are still outstanding after 7 years, they are wrote off the books leaving thousands of dollars owed to merchants and thousands of goods basically stolen.Who pays in the end? Comsumers! The criminals know how to work the system too. They write bad checks knowing that they will never be served a warrent for them unless they are stopped for some traffic violation….only then will the warrents for worthless checks be served…Think of the huindreds of criminals who never get stopped and get away scott free……
