Accused Donkey Killer Surrenders At Escambia County Jail

May 7, 2009

The teen accused of shooting a donkey over the weekend near Jacks Branch Road turned himself in at the Escambia County Jail just after 9:00 Wednesday.

Kyle Mason Driver, 17, was accompanied by his mother and an attorney when he surrendered at the jail, according to Sgt. Kevin Vickrey with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department.

driver10.jpgDriver’s arrest came about two hours after NorthEscambia.com published his photo and a plea for the public’s help in locating him from the Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies said Driver has confessed to deputies that he shot a donkey on River Annex Road near Jacks Branch Road late Saturday night. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Department says that he will be charged with felony cruelty to animals causing death, using a weapon during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a person under 18.

The shooting happened within minutes of the birth J.B., a white donkey that has become a local media celebrity of sorts.

One day I was 17 years old, the next day I was 18 years old, I had five days to go sign up to go to Vietnam or go to prison. I was just as much an adult the days before I turned 18 as I was on that day.

This is sad… I can’t say I would throw all the blame on his parents, some kids could care less what their parents think and do the complete opposite of what they were taught. I really hope he learns his lesson, it was a very stupid action. I hope he gets the right punishment….

I HOPE JB is still doing good.

  8. curious on May 8th, 2009 9:20 pm

No one has yet to mention if he did this on purpose, although I will agree that it was wrong.

  9. Fed up on May 8th, 2009 8:01 pm

Yes human life is of more value than an animal however that does not make it right. I have to assume that if this had been your animal that had been murdered you would want some one to pay. Society does put too much concern in areas that aren’t worthy when they should others. If this particular mother had not continued to keep bailing her sons out of trouble and made them take responsibility for their actions this would not even be an issue right now. What are we teaching our kids?

What a senseless act of cruelty. What is next for this upstanding young man? Will he shoot at his neighbors? Shoot at his family? Shoot at my family? Shoot at your family? Neither he nor his family should be allowed to forget this travesty. Huge fines, punishments, and a lot of hard labor and counseling should follow this very cruel and senseless act.

I am so sure that all of you on here blaming the “mom” have perfect kids. So “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”
Kids make mistakes, adults make mistakes, so all of you who want to condemn this boy to life in prison “hell”, make sure that you are without sin.

awwww poor baby…. this charge of using a firearm to commit a felony is going to follow him the rest of his life? bless his little heart, he didn’t mean any harm – in all of his video games the dead guys get up and come back for another go.

Get real – 17 years old he knew what he was doing and what the consequences would be if / when he was caught but he still made the decision to shoot a defenseless animal in the middle of the night.

I hope he gets everything the law that HE broke allows

    your exactly right Bob

  15. Bob on May 8th, 2009 9:12 am

Let’s put this in perspective. Children are turned loose every night of the week to harass and have fun. Parents know not where they might be. Same goes for A T Vs they destroy and run over property with no respect for the landowner. Put 90% of the blame on the parents. These same children would not work if you offered them a job nor do the parents want them to work. Until parents take a stronger stand, random acts of a violent nature will continue to go forthwith. So don’t always put the blame on the kids, put the blame on the parents where it rightfully belongs.

Jay & Put it in perspective… I completely agree with ya’ll.

This kid having a felony that i’m sure is not going to drop off record at 18 will have that haunt him the rest of his life.

  17. DJ Sheffield on May 7th, 2009 10:07 pm

JAY……..GOD also created animals, not just humans my friend. But I do see your point and it was made extremely well! As far as EMD…..those eyes aren’t sad, it got caught after trying to run. We as a community can only hope that he can and will find JESUS CHRIST before it’s to late. As I stated before I hope justice is served. Kyle needs some jail time and then some mental help. Then again mental help will not help someone that isn’t willing to help theirself.

  18. Common sense on May 7th, 2009 9:31 pm

Yes, it should be a HUGE deal to kill a child. There is no arguing that. However, you need to understand that nearly every single serial killer, psycho whatever in the world started out………………..by cruelty to animals. We need to be punishing it THEN before it progresses to hurting people.

  19. curious on May 7th, 2009 5:23 pm

Jay- Don’t give him any ideas.

  20. Catherine on May 7th, 2009 4:20 pm

No one sees the connection between animal cruelty and then violence against humans? Look it up. Once shooting animals become a bore they usually go on to more interesting things like shooting YOU or your loved one. No pity here!!!!!

  21. Put it in perspective on May 7th, 2009 3:03 pm

First I would like to make it clear that i think that what this kid did was very wrong and he should be punished for it, and i hope he learns his lesson, and like E.M.D. said, i hope he finds Jesus, but….. why is everyone so worried about a dead donkey. Yes, it was wrong and cruel to shoot a donkey with a .22, but it almost seems as if people (america and the world in general) value an animal’s life more than a human’s. “Im not anti-animal im pro-human. I think it’s wonderful that peole care about animals… What bothers me is the people that think animals and humans are equal!” -Brad Stein People are getting way to worried about animals. If you kill an animal “ooohhhhh you should go to jail for the rest of your LIFE”, but kill an unborn baby and its your right. We (america) should wake up, smell the coffee, and WORRY ABOUT MORE IMPORTANT THINGS! If you want to listen to the skit i quoted from, copy and paste http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfXu9V9ggoU into your browser and watch the first few minutes… its funny and hits the nail on the head. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfXu9V9ggoU

  22. Jay on May 7th, 2009 2:37 pm

Maybe he should have killed a baby or a human so he would have a lesser of a charge. I wish people would care as much for the life of each other as they have cherished the life of this donkey. Humans were created in the image of God doesn’t that make us more valuable than the animals we are so fond of.

  23. mommyof2beautifulgirls on May 7th, 2009 12:39 pm

this young man is going to pay for this for the rest of his life, and it consciousness will be forever haunting as he get’s older.i do think that he did this as a random act of being a teenager and showing off in front of his friends..but he’s the one that’s getting punished and he gets to live with it.as for his parents i have to say it takes the public and a picture of their son out in the opened to reveal the damage..way 2 go..that’s shame enough on her part.i think this young man should help in taking care of the donkey..and do some major community service too in punishment to what he has done.that make him realize what he’s done.

  24. me on May 7th, 2009 12:25 pm

Believe me when I say this. He WILL pay for this for the rest of his life, whether he goes to jail or not. People don’t forget stuff like this, they might forgive him, but they will never forget. When you do something like this, that has gotten this much attention, he won’t ever be able to live this down. He does look like a sad person. He was probably trying to show off for some of his friends or something like that. He is just a teenager, and we all know that teenagers don’t think about stuff before they do it. I truly hope that he is punished by the courts for what he has done, and maybe this can set an example for ALL teens.

  25. annoyed on May 7th, 2009 6:44 am

I’m so glad that he turned himself in. What he did was inexcusable. I hope that he goes to prison for a very long time. Anyone that kills animals for fun should go to prison for LIFE…I hate people who do that.

  26. E.M.D. on May 7th, 2009 2:22 am

What this young man did made me heart sick. I was angry and perplexed. I feel so sorry for the momma he shot, and for that poor little donkey. But now that I can see the offender, I feel even more heart sick. He has two of the saddest eyes I have ever seen. He has the countenance of a wounded soul, and of a sinful and lost young man that Jesus died for. If you read this, Kyle, you need to know Jesus Christ. He is Love, and He loved you enough to suffer hell for the punishment we all deserve for our disobedience His Word. Do not judge Him by anyone but Himself. Learn of Him for yourself. You need Him. Do not wait until you are good enough. None of us are good enough. He can and will change your life and your heart, if you will let him. By tomorrow there will be about a hundred people (includint myself) around the world praying for you. Turn around. Go the other way. It is a narrow road, but the broad one is a dead end, and that is the one most are on. Dare to be different.

  27. DJ Sheffield on May 7th, 2009 12:32 am

It sure is ashame that it took the public talking out over the radio stations to get his mother to do what was right…………Guess she is trying to make herself look good now. NOT! Now we can only hope & pray that “THE DONKEY MURDER” doesn’t get Judge Linda Nobles for she isn’t capable of handing down justice. There are many of us that reside in this community and will make sure that everyone knows who he is, who his parents are, and so on. Make this idiot do some time in prison and be tried as an ADULT. Apparently teen court last year did no good for opening his eyes.
