(Updated 12:45 p.m.) The Escambia County Sheriff’s Department has arrested two men in connection with a shooting Wednesday night in Molino after one of the men was sold fake crack cocaine.

Deputies say Robert Grant Piehl, 41, and  Harry L. Nowlin, 42, were arrested in connection with incident that occurred on Barth Lane about 6:40 p.m.

Piehl reportedly bought what he thought was crack cocaine for $40 earlier in the day on Wednesday on Barth Lane.. But he discovered the crack was fake and returned to confront the alleged dealer with a .22 caliber rifle Wednesday evening, according to Lt. Tony Jordan with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department. Piehl pointed the rifle at several people and fired into two houses, Jordan said.

Piehl approached Louise Sampson, 88, and asked about the alleged drug dealer, according to the sheriff’s department. Sampson denied knowing the man, prompting Piehl to fire the rifle through the elderly woman’s door.

There were no injuries.

Deputies responding to the 911 call about the incident found Piehl and Nowlin as they were leaving, stopped their vehicle and arrested them on Highway 29. The rifle allegedly used in the incident was still in the truck, Jordan said. They were booked into the Escambia County Jail on multiple charges.

Robert Grant Piehl, 41, was charged with aggravated assault, having a weapon during the commission of a crime, shooting into a dwelling, criminal mischief and robbery. He is being held in the Escambia County Jail on $165,000 bond.

Harry L. Nowlin, 42, was charged with aggravated assault and robbery. He is being held in the Escambia County Jail on $105,000 bond.

The incident is still under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department.

Yes these 2 men did wrong in every sense and nothing can be said or done to undo what they have done, BUT I am here to tell you that if it takes every day for the rest of my life I will see to it that the “FAKE CRACK DEALERS” become inmates too.
You know it bugs me to NO end that the worst of all criminals (DRUG DEALERS & CHILD MOLESTERS) pay LESS consequences than a “Bad Check Charge”
You write a bad check and spend 18 months in jail, you sell drugs or molest a child and you get to wear the electronic jewlery, BUT thats Florida for you.

SINCE WHEN R U ALLOWED TO WRITE SOME OF THIS B/S ON THIS SITE? WHY R PEOPLE EVEN DISCUSING THE THINGS THAT DON’T MATTER. THESE MEN HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND NEED HELP, NOT ALL THE HARSH WORDS. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN ANYONE, AND SOMEONE CLOSE TO YOU. WOULD YOU TALK DOWN ABOUT THEM OR WOULD YOU HELP THEM. EVERYONE HAS THIER OWN DEMONS AND DEAL WITH THEM VERY DIFFERENTLY. I THINK IF YOU DON’T HAVE SOMETHING ENCOURAGING TO SAY OR IDEAS ON HOW TO HELP THE COMMUNITY AND A FRIENDS, EVEN IF THEY’RE STRANGERS, YOU SHOULDN’T EVEN OPEN YOUR MOUTH. NEGATIVE JUST BRINGS MORE NEGATIVE. NO WONDER PEOPLE MAKE WRONG CHOICES SOMETIMES, THEY DON’T HAVE SOMETHING OR SOMEONE POSITIVE IN THEIR LIFE. I WAS RAISED AROUND BOTH THESE GUYS AND THEY WERE FAMILY TO ME, HANG IN THERE, SOMETHING WILL TOUCH YA’LL AND HOPEFULLY TURN THINGS AROUND IN YOUR LIFE AND WHEN IT DOES WE CAN ALL WRITE THE BEST SONG EVER WRITTEN, ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE, THAT MAY TOUCH SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE BEFORE THEY GO TOO FAR!!!!

The system sucks, the cops aren’t doing their job,and jail doesn’t help anyone. The only good thing out of this, is, the crack dealers are probably scared to death now. They won’t mess with anymore Redneck boys.
A GOOD FRIEND WILL BAIL YOU OUT OF JAIL, BUT A REAL FRIEND WILL BE SITTING NEXT TO YOU SAYING,” WE REALLY SCREWED UP THIS TIME!! ”

I do believe that Teen Challenge has a program for men now. A good while back I heard they had about an 85% success rate. They have one for women too. I’ve met folks from both. I believe it is worth looking into.

    Me the people,

I think you should continue to post as long as you believe you have something constructive to say. I do not believe any of the posters own the comments section. Just because someone disagrees with what you say, does not mean you are wrong. Dare to stand alone, if you have to. I agree with the things you’ve said.

  8. kgar79 on April 19th, 2009 10:50 pm

Ok, Calm, Peace, Grant is not mentally disabled or have FAS. Thats a lousy picture of Grant. He has a drug problem, he’s been fighting it for a long time. He needs help, Pathway For Change, for instance might be a suitable option, maybe psychiatric help. Definitely doesn’t need prison time.
    Thats all……

  9. me the people on April 19th, 2009 9:42 pm

My intention is not offend. To clarify, Fetal Alchohol Syndrome and some genetic mutations manifest themselves with the same physical features. I have family member with similar features. I’m not accusing the mother of anything, just stating a fact. Google Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and you’ll see many illustrations of the physical affects.

By the way … I know many people with a variety of disabiliites who are talented, loving people. I also know that if this man is mentally disabled, then he needs a different path than state prison.

I will not post again on this matter.

  10. E.M.D. on April 19th, 2009 8:58 pm

    kgar79 ,

Whoa. Please slow down for a moment. In my opinion, “me the people” made the same observation that I had made. He/she ??saw the same thing I did, and I truly believe was trying to be helpful. The condition I believe I am finally seeing has a name. It is called “fetal alcohol syndrome.” And I am also qualified to make that observation. Sometimes a thing has to be named before help can be sought for it. I did not say anything, as I was debating whether or not I should do so in this forum. I hesitated because I did not want to chance hurting someone who may not understand. But, I must come to the defense of this other unknown voice.(“me the people”) I think you are being way too harsh kgar79. Sometimes, the truth can be painful, but perhaps help cannot be sought, unless one knows what to help. My thought has been, for years, that there was something just slightly amiss, but could not put my finger on it. Yes, I have heard that Grant is a good musician. And, I have never thought of him as violent. I believe we are onto something here. This could be a discovery that could be of great help to Grant. It is not a put down. I have big flat feet and slight dyslexia. That does not make me a bad person. I think the days are long gone where handicaps were hidden, and the person treated in a way that was below the dignity of everyone else. All of us have something to overcome, and are a sum total of the genetic influences and prenatal events that color our entrance into this world. I think you, and “me the people” and myself, and others, all care about, not only these men, but the people they put in harm’s way. Can’t we all have some civil input here, and try to think the best of one another?

    Feedback, anyone???

  11. kgar79 on April 19th, 2009 5:59 pm

    hey “me the people”
So much for your ability to stereotype people based on their physical appearance. Grant Piehl is a very gifted musician, and before he became disabled (on the job) he was a foreman with most of the companies he worked with. He is a very long ways from being mentally handicaped. And how dare you suggest that his mother, whom I know personally, was abusing alcohol. The very idea is ludicrous. If your research leads you to believe this sort of thing I have to tell you , you are sadly mistaken. It would also suggest that your skills as a worker in your stated field were questionable at the very best. But as usual this is the sort of thinking that makes our system of doing things to take care of each person according to their needs as faulty as we all see clearly that it is. Maybe you need a refresher course, most certainly you are in need of some humility and a healthy dose of compassion. Doctors, lawyers, nurses, and school teachers in this county have drug problems and this is just another couple of good guys gone wrong, with a drug problem.
I would like for you to think about how his mother would feel if she sees this , which by the way she will, not one of her children are illiterate or incapable of using a computer to access these posts on this site. In fact I would like to thank each and everyone here who have posted their intent here to give prayers and support to Grant , Dale and their families. I happen to know that she does read these posts or have reports of them from one of her children and she is grateful for your prayers and support. I have never known Grant to do any violence to anyone or anything. Maybe you should stop and think about where your breaking point is and what you might do if pushed hard enough. Please keep your lowbrow statements to yourself, point to consider, given that you make these statements, I could probably lay the span of three fingers between your eyes!

  12. me the people on April 19th, 2009 8:06 am

Piehl has the look of a person with mental handicaps. I work with persons with disabilities so I’m not hurling an insult — this is research from reliable sources. Piehl has low set ears, wide set eyes and a very thin upper lip. These physical traits could indicate that his mother was abusing drugs or alcohol while she was pregnant. (I don’t know him personally so this is all from looking at his photo and reading the information provided here.)

If this is the case, then Piehl needs to evaluated and entered into a program for disabled adults. Putting him in jail for a few years will do nothing to correct his behavior. He’ll probably be brutalized or worse. I don’t think it’s right that he’s doing drugs, buying drugs or chasing down drug dealers who cheated him. I would (if he is MH) think he should be housed in a facility for violent, mentally handicapped adults.

Dear Dale, My Brother and My FRIEND,
I’m having a hard time NOT thinking about you. Mostly about how close you were getting to being FREE of some of those devils plaguing you. You were trying hard and I saw that. We had fun having you so near and your help with the daily chores. Keeping busy was our best “medicine” I could tell by your pictures how disappointed in yourself you are. I know what’s inevidably going to transpire and I think you’ve already resolved to that fact and I’m glad! We both know finding drug dealers in jail isn’t hard to do. But that will only make the stay longer and I know you don’t want to miss out on D’s learning to drive. So, I’m confident this is the first day of the rest of your new life!
TODAY is the first day of the rest of your life! I hope and pray the time you are away will be your salvation. My hopes for you are high! We will not give up on you EVER! It was a beautiful day today so I decided to see this “neighborhood” you were in. The few people I saw outdoors “looked innocent enough.” The other human beings I saw were indeed drug dealers. How do I know? Because they tried to stop me and asked if I came to get “something” or did I need a menu? I saw it with my own eyes. All I could do was laugh and drive away. Was the “Law” in the area? I didn’t see any while I was there nor did I see any coming or going on Hwy. 29. Big suprise! I guess technically I was tresspassing by sightseeing in the neighborhood. But I saw and experienced exactly what I expected to and this was just one neighborhood. Needless to say I won’t be back there on purpose! Please, enroll in any and every program available to you while you are there. Use your time wiser than ever before. My heart tells me you will! Arthur is fine and will get lots of loving you know that. I hate jail, but as soon as things are where we can see you, we will. because we love you! Please try to hang in there because lots of people STILL love you! And I miss you already! :O)

  14. E.M.D. on April 18th, 2009 10:19 pm

    Dear haterofdrugdealer,

You could be correct. However, I have a hunch that I know the dealer. The name is familiar. I am fairly confident that this is a house I had to visit at 3:00 in the morning, over 13 years ago. I was on call. The grandson was a patient, and the grandmother was one of the most beautiful spirited people I have ever met. I liked her instantly. Please be careful what you say about her. She is a child of God. A real one. The grandson was very likable, but he has problems, I am not at liberty to discuss. I could be wrong about knowing them, but I think not.

I can empathize with your anger, but please don’t say something you will be sorry for. I wish I could fix all the wrong I see. I can’t, but know The One who can. Very soon you will know who is really His, and who is not.

  15. haterofdrugdealer on April 18th, 2009 8:12 pm

I am almost willing to bet that the same “Dealers” who sold it to Grant have already returned to dealing with NOT a bit of fear, and the poor old “Granny” who was so shaken up is probably sitting in her rockin chair telling them they best be more careful next time. I don’t believe for a minute that she does NOT know what goes on in her own house. GIVE ME A BREAK GRANNY!!!!!!!

  16. kgar79 on April 18th, 2009 3:54 pm

I know Grant well enough to say there is no doubt in my mind that he is right with Jesus. Also let me reiterate I have spoken to him since he has gone to jail, he knows just how badly he has done. Just because one accepts the Lord into their heart does not mean that they are forever never going to make a mistake again. Thats why we have God watching over us. All this talk about God isn’t going to bring any action on the county’s part to do the right thing and shut down the dealers. What we NEED is enough people working together to let them know we have had ENOUGH! When the problem is so bad that some one gets so mad they go through the area with a gun , what part of that doesn’t anybody understand? Here’s your sign!!!, he had all he could stand. Now its up to us the community to make enough noise to get the powers that be up off their fat behinds and start cleaning up these rats nests. Who on here doesn’t have a friend or family member or know of someone fighting the same devils as Grant and Dale? How many more people have to suffer through this to get the police to do what we pay them for. I’m not arguing for Grant and Dales innocence. The blame is on everyone of us for allowing it to continue.

  17. Lil'mouse on April 18th, 2009 3:38 pm

Amen to EMD, paint, lil’stepchild, b.stepchild, kgar79 & to Caitlyn, the only thing about this that is stupid is why in the world our Sherrifs dept is stupid enough to allow crackhouses & dealers to keep dealing. I lived with my kids right down the road from these 2 houses for years & saw how many people were coming in & out every single day. Many other places around Pensacola are known for crack & the cops do nothing. I just cant believe that nothing can be done. If this fatal drug wasnt so accessible, maybe many people wouldnt become so strung out that they do such stupid things that destroy their lives & families. Both of these men have good hearts & families who care. They are victims among victims. The grandmother who lives in the house is obviously a victim of her own grandson who lives in the house with her as well. Like one said, they are inviting danger, guns, knives & who knows what else by choosing to sell crack, fake or whatever. They are putting their loved ones in danger as well. I hope & pray for all people involved in this whole ordeal of crack & violence that God can help us all overcome it. I pray that the county will FINALLY do something to help stop the source, drugs. I have gone to the substation in Cantonment personally myself years ago & asked them to do something about this in Barth to help my family.. Do more patrols, whatever it takes. Send in an undercover buyer..etc etc…to no avail. Nothing was ever done & now look, Barth is plagued as always and people are hurt. No bodily injuries but plenty of emotional ones. May God please protect them in jail, & yes this is where they both belong right now. WE Love you ALWAYS, Grant.

  18. E.M.D. on April 18th, 2009 2:26 pm

Of course the dealers, phony or otherwise, need to be investigated and locked up too. However, that does not excuse what these two men did. They made a choice THEY NEED to own. One cannot be delivered from a problem they do not own up to. A person may be able to hide from the law, but not from The Law. He sees/hears/knows everything. They both need to turn themselves in to The One Who Is: Law, Justice, Mercy, Grace, Counselor, Love, and so much more. So do the dealers. So do we all, if we haven’t already done so. He is THE Solution.

IT BOTHERS ME TO READ SOME OF THESE COMMENTS FOLKS HAVE WRIITTEN. MAKING FUN OF THESE GUYS, WHO ARE HUMANS, SOMEONES FATHER, LOTS OF PEOPLES FRIENDS, THEY HAVE BEEN OVERTAKEN BY THE POWER OF DRUGS. THEY NEED HELP NOT OUR JUDGMENT. ITS EASY TO COME ON HERE AND WRITE NEGATIVE THINGS, OR WRITE STUFF JUST BECAUSE, BUT IF WE WOULD SIT AND REALLY THINK ABOUT THE PROBLEM MAYBE ONE DAY IT COULD BE RESOLVED. LIKE: THE DEALERS, NOT ONE WORD IN THE NEWS ABOUT THEM. THAT LOCATION IS FULL OF THEM, ITS A KNOWN FACT. ANYWAYS ALL I’M SAYING IS BEFORE EVERYONE STARTS THOWING STONES, HOW ABOUT FIRST, PICK THEM UP AND START REBUILDING A COMMUNITY W/O THE MAIN PROBLEM, DRUGS & VIOLENCE.

  21. B.Stepchild on April 18th, 2009 9:16 am

“Its Just a Silent War”, Its not so silent no more. EMD Grant wrote a song about you called, “The Day the Preacherman Came”, thats what he needs right now. Both Dale and Grant are suffering, I know that they are remorseful, I have spoken to Grant. He is definitely singing the blues now. Everyone is putting the shame on Grant and Dale right now, but the shame needs to be on the system and the police for allowing this problem to continue like it has for the last twenty years in Barth. They never bust Barth. Maybe its time to open everyones eyes to the big problem. So far its been a “Silent War”.

  22. kgar79 on April 18th, 2009 8:34 am

The police should be taken to task for this event. I know both those guys, they ARE good people in their hearts. They both have problems, I have watched both of them pray for relief and struggle with it. Everyone can and will reach a breaking point if they are pushed to far. The police know about the dealers in Barth and other places up here. They do NOTHING, everytime something like this happens its more money for the county, does anyone know how much the state pays the county for each incarcerated individual? Has anyone any idea or even thought about why the police don’t do anything? Are they making money off of letting these situations continue? You bet your butt. If they bust the dealer thats one person in jail, but if they just bust buyers then there is a constant supply of victims for the jail/court system to suck money from. Its outrageous that this has continued for so long. The womans who’s house got shot into, she more than likely has a drug dealer for a son or grandson, belive me she’s not innocent either. They didnt randomly shoot at her house. They knew precisely where they bought the drugs, fake or real. Both those men need help, but all of us need help, we need to demand that the police start doing something about these dealers instead of worrying about the aftermath and repercussions of their inept handling of the problem.

  23. E.M.D. on April 18th, 2009 12:50 am

Of course. They both should serve time for this. Who said they should not? Who said, “He was a good kid, he just needs guidance?” I didn’t say that. I said I cared about him. I also care about you, even when you call this man a scumbag. I think we all have some scum in our bags. I try to remember that everyone is the sum total of their genetic make up, their environment and their experiences. I could be in his shoes. So could you. I do not think that the things I have said previously in any way excuse this radical, very bad behavior. How did I dumb myself down? How did the others? I can assure you that I am very awake to what is going on around us in 2009. I, in NO WAY, excuse this behaviour. I am horrified that there was an elderly person (or any person) in the house that was fired on. This behaviour, from the purchase of what he thought was crack to the shooting incident, was all very wrong. Name calling helps no one. It is a waste of time. Sometimes I waste my time like that too, alone on the road. But, those times are going to become fewer, I hope. I keep hearing folks say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and hoping for different results. I think it is time for all men to read their Maker’s Manual, and find out what we are doing wrong, and how to stop doing it. Many hear about what’s in the manual and follow other’s instructions as to what it says. If everyone read it for themselves, and asked The Author about the parts they don’t understand, believe His answers, and follow His instructions, this would be a perfect world again. Sadly, only a few will do that. I understand your anger at this and all the other crime that goes on. It angers me too. But, this man and his friend are human beings. They are men that Jesus died for, just as He did for us. Jesus said, ” They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

I have asked Him to help the other man too. The trials in this world can be overwhelming. But, God is greater than all trials. I am counting on Him to help these two men, and Grant”s old friend to see this.

Someone once told me, “You cannot be mad at a blind man because he is blind.”
There are many blind men. And, the rest have blind spots.

My spirit just remembered that Jesus once touched a blind man, and the man said, “I see men as trees, walking.” Jesus touched him again, and the man said, “I see all men clearly.”

We all need that second touch.

  37. E.M.D. on April 16th, 2009 8:46 pm

    Yes, Mr. Mike,

It does sound like he was trying to turn around at one point. I was not around him much, but what time I was, I liked him. To my knowledge, he has never been in real bad trouble. I still do not think he is a hardened criminal. Looks like he only had traffic citations before this. And I am disappointed, and said so. I did not say I was disappointed in him. I just said I was disappointed. It wasn’t a real long time ago, that I was very disappointed in myself, however. I suddenly realized I had unwittingly gotten myself hooked on prescription drugs. I did not realize this until I tried to taper off of them, and went into withdrawal. It was a nightmare. I never want to go through anything like that again. So yes, I am human too, as are these men. I am glad that you called me down on how I presented my appeal. I just wanted so bad for him and one of his old friends (who is very dear to my heart, and far away from the God he knows exists) to really get into the things God has for them that they are missing out on. They have no idea what they are missing. I do not even know anyone who is perfect yet, and it seems to me that the majority of church goers are luke warm. I did not mean to sound like I was putting anyone down. I genuinely care what happens to these men. I pray God reaches them now, where they are. He loves them very much. What I wrote before could sound other than the way it was intended. Thanks for pointing that out. Perhaps someone will see that these men get this message also. Grant, if you see this, I want you to know that I am not disappointed in you, I am just disappointed for you. If I am disappointed in you, then I would have to also be disappointed in myself as well. I am, and others are, praying for you. Please don’t give up. God forgives us quicker than people do……..on the whole. I know that drugs are not the answer. How can I help you?

    Thanks, Mr. Mike.

Sounds like he was trying to turn around at one point. He’s not the first person in the world to try to break a bad habit or lifestyle… and eventually fall back into temptation. I myself have never done drugs and don’t understand why anyone would. But these guys need our prayers…not our lectures. If Grant said he was trying to be a better person, then he obviously WANTS TO. I personally hope he doesn’t see how dissapointed you are in him. It’s just gonna make him feel terrible which I’m sure he already does. There’s no excuse for this kind of behavior. It blows my mind. but Just pray for him. And pray for the others involved.

    Grant,
I am so disappointed. What I recently heard from you had boosted my hope that others would soon follow your example. This is yet another of the many cases of “I got saved,” gone awry from one or more of many reasons. A few are; no true repentance, wanting to use Jesus only as a fire escape, no study of The Word for yourself, no fellowship with true believers, judging God!!! because of what some folks do that claim to serve Him, “the feeling went away.” The Word speaks to all of these and more. I pray you will try again, and this time, do it right. I hope you remember our brief encounter, after all these years. You didn’t recognize me at first, nor I, you. You are not the only one who has had much disillusionment, stress, anxiety and disappointment. It is coming to us all. You do not have to let these things be a stumbling block. You can use them as stepping stones to raise yourself up higher, and become a light. We already have enough darkness in this world. I hope and pray you will do Romans 12:1 and become part of the solution. I pray you will consider your choices. The ones you have been making are not getting the results you desire. Turn around, Grant. The hour is late. You cannot say no one cares. God cares and He is using me right now, to tell you it is not too late yet. The invitation still stands. I hope you remember where I referred you for fellowship, prayer and help. We are still on the hill. I am praying for you, and soon there will be a team of around a hundred around the country and at least one or two in other countries praying for you. We need you on God’s turf, helping us pray for your old friend. I pray my tears are not in vain. But, my tears are nothing compared to the pain, agony, humiliation, nakedness, shed tears and death, born for you by Jesus. He didn’t do all this for you because he felt like it. He did it because He loves you like no one else can. Please don’t let it be in vain on your behalf.
