April Students of the Month have been named at North Escambia schools.The monthly recognition is presented to two students from each participating school by the Escambia Association for Administrators in Education

The following students of the month were named from North Escambia schools:

Ernest Ward Middle Needs Items For Super Yard Sale

Ernest Ward Middle School is accepting items for a “Super Yard Sale” to be held on Saturday, May 9.

Donated items for the yard sale will be accepted from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 until 5:00 p.m. Persons donating items should check in at the front office.

Some of the items needed for the yard sale include:

  • baby clothes
  • baby furniture
  • children and adult clothes
  • lawn equipment
  • lawn furniture
  • electronics
  • small appliances
  • furniture
  • plants
  • toys
  • sporting goods
  • tools
  • books
  • kitchen items
  • antiques
  • small housewares

Items donated should be in a good condition.

The Super Yard Sale at Ernest Ward Middle School will be held on Saturday, May 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Reconciled In Molino

The group Reconciled from Olive Baptist Church will be in concert tonight in Molino.

The free concert will take place at Highland Baptist Church on Highway 95A at 6:00 tonight. Admission is free.

Miss Blueberry Pageant: Now Is Time To Register

bbjam.gifApplications are being accepted until Saturday from girls that wish to complete in the first Miss Blueberry Pageant on June 12 at the county’s Blueberry Jamboree in Barrineau Park.

A Miss Blueberry Blossom will be named from girls in the sixth to eighth grade, and Miss Blueberry will be named from competitors in grades 9 to 12. Girls must be residents of Escambia County.

Applications and non-refundable $30 entry fees must be submitted in person on Saturday, May 2 between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the Barrineau Park Community Center at 6055 Barrineau Park School Road at which time applicants will receive information packages. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Escambia County Recreation. Event coordinators will explain judging procedures, rules and regulations, and answer questions at 9 a.m. Alternative arrangements are available for applicants who cannot attend registration by calling pageant coordinators prior to May 2.

Miss Blueberry is expected to participate in the Blueberry and Bluegrass Jamboree festivities on Saturday, June 13. She must also attend the 2010 Miss Blueberry crowning and will be asked to attend several other local community events. Miss Blueberry Blossom is exempt from mandatory attendance at community events.

The Blueberry and Bluegrass Jamboree is sponsored in part by Escambia County Neighborhoods and Community Services Bureau, University of Florida IFAS Extension Services and NorthEscambia.com.

EREC Holds 70th Annual Meeting Saturday, Elects Trustees

Escambia River Electric Cooperative’s 70th Annual Meeting  was held Saturday at Jay High School.

James Earl Hall and Ernie Hester were elected as cooperative trustees from Escambia County and Ed Kelly was elected as a Santa Rosa County trustee.

Mr. and Mrs. Jeremy Edlen Posey Garrett are proud to announce the birth of their son Jesse Mason Garrett. Grandparents are Lynn Jesse and Joyce Garrett of Barrineau Park, and Diana and Jim Smith of Racine, Ohio. Great-grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Cleavy Edward Posey, Sr. of Crestview. Jesse Mason is named after his Granddaddy Lynn Jesse, Sr. and his Uncle Lynn Jesse Garrett, Jr. and also his Granddaddy Jim Mason and Uncle Josh Mason of Ohio.

Century Holds Relay For Life

century-relay067.jpgCommunities from across the area joined together Saturday and early Sunday morning for Century’s Relay for Life.

The event, which benefits the America Cancer Society, was held from noon Saturday 6:00 Sunday morning at Kayo Stanton Stadium at the Old Century High School on Hecker Road.

Participants, sponsors and entertainers from Century, McDavid, Walnut Hill, Flomaton, Pensacola, Milton and Atmore are taking part in the Century Relay for Life. NorthEscambia.com will have a complete photo gallery Sunday morning with dozens of Relay photos.

“It is a community joining together for a common goal — celebrating life, remembering those lost to cancer and fighting back against the disease” Paula Jernigan, Century’s Relay chairperson, said.

A presentation was made during the opening ceremony at noon to honor Kayo Stanton, the man for which the old Century High School stadium is named. After a NorthEscambia.com about Mr. Stanton (click here for the story), Relay organizers decided to honor his memory.

As of “bank night’ last Tuesday, Century’s Relay had raised about $14,000 in donations for the American Cancer Society. To make a last minute donation to today’s Century Relay for Life  make your donation online.

Participating teams will include the Alger-Sullivan Historical Society, Bryneville Elementary, Carver/Century K-8, Century Branch Library, Century Correctional Institute, Century Pharmacy, Critter Caregivers, Ray’s Chapel Baptist Church, Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department and NorthEscambia.com.

Barrineau Park Gets Clean And Green

A small army of volunteers headed out from the Barrineau Park Community Center Saturday morning on a Clean and Green Community Cleanup.

The volunteers fanned out across the community, trash bags in hand, to clean up the roadsides around Barrineau Park.

Free t-shirts and “green” reusable shopping bags were provided to participants.

This was the fourth annual Barrineau Park Community Cleanup Event.

Sponsors include the Honeysuckle Garden Club, the Barrineau Park Historical Society and Fran’s Diner.

The Third Annual Ernest Ward Middle School Sports Banquet was held Friday night.

Students were honored for their participation in football, cheerleading, volleyball, track, basketball and swimming.
