Deputy, Prisoner Suffer Minor Injuries In Collision With Cow; Second Cow Accident Hours Later

An Escambia County Deputy and a prisoner suffered minor injuries in a collision with a cow about 8:30 Tuesday night in Molino. About 12:30 Wednesday morning, another accident with a cow injured a woman a few feet away.
Deputy Steve Kay was southbound on Highway 29 when he struck the black cow in front of Aldersgate Methodist Church, just south of the Highway 97 intersection. Kay was transporting Brenton Kelley, 45, of Bogia to the Escambia County Jail at the time of the accident.
About 12:30 Wednesday morning, a woman who was identified as being about 60 years old suffered a head injury when she struck a cow near Highway 29 and Bet Raines Road. She was transported to the hospital by ambulance. LifeFlight was originally called to the scene, but the helicopter was canceled.
In the first crash, Deputy Kay suffered minor cuts as a result of his airbag deploying. He was not transported to the hospital.
Kelley, who was in the backseat caged area of the cruiser, complained of minor injuries and was transported to a Baptist Hospital in Pensacola by Escambia County EMS. Kelley (pictured left in his booking photo) was treated and released before being booked into the county jail. The cow did not survive the collision with the marked cruiser.
Kelley was arrested earlier in the evening at a home in the 500 block of Bogia Road after he allegedly threatened to kill his wife with a loaded shotgun. He was taken into custody without incident.
Sgt. Steve Smith said Kelley was charged with domestic violence related battery and three counts of aggravated assault in the connection with the altercation on Bogia Road. Smith said Kay was transporting Kelley to the jail to book him on the charges at the time of the accident.
A crime scene unit from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department was called to the scene to photograph the car and cow, a common practice when a county owned vehicle is damaged.
The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. The Molino Station of Escambia County Fire Rescue also responded to the call.

Well….George Bush, you really made a very good point. I know I will not be leaving any rude comments for the family to read. I hope things get better for the family and he gets the help that he needs.
This is really sad that people have nothing better to do with their time than to get on a website and rejoice in the fact that another family is in pain. His daughter, who is a victim as well, should not feel like she has to get on here and speak up for her dad, that had to be hard for her. Thank you people…for making a 19 year old girl go through even more Hell, you should be so happy with yourself…..NOT. It’s sick that people are happy and making jokes about someone’s father being in jail on Christmas. Oh, and NEWS FLASH………….he’s not going to read this, you know who does read this though? His kids, his family, his 70 year old parents……that’s who you’re hurting, not him. So, if hurting elderly people and kids makes you feel satisfied with your life and makes you sleep good at night then I think that’s saying something about the kind of person you are, you’re no better than him.

So maybe all of this will stop. I am the daughter in this family. We told who needed to know and who we wanted to know. If we wanted everybody to know then thats what would have been done. If it bothers you all this bad about it being posted and put out in the public then you need a life or help yourself. That, to me, is just wanting to be nosey. We all have our on opinions and it not being known to the entire public is one of ours. But now theres nothing we can do about it so just go on with your own lives and let us and the ones like my aunt Beverly do what we know has to be done…My daddy was like my best friend. It hurts knowing that this is happening. In a way Im is denial but I have to realize reality. To me, my daddy is dead and this is just some man that really needs help. I will never hate him or deny him as my daddy. If it wasnt for him and my mom I wouldnt be who I am today. I love you daddy! and Im so glad to still have you mama:)
i am the family and this is not a secret to anyone who knows us. It just isn’t the business of people who don’t know us.
I’ve been a victim myself of domestic violence and kept it a big secret from everyone until it got so big I couldn’t keep the secret any longer because my daughter told others about it.
The fear of telling someone what was going on in the home made me fearful of even more problems at home once the authorities intervened therefore I kept quiet and put up with the physical damage done only to me, not my child, but I can tell you from my personal experience that having someone intervene and help me get away from it was one of the biggest blessings I’ve ever received in my life.
Domestic violence leads to many murders in this nation every year, and perhaps some of them could have been prevented if the person the violent acts were being committed upon would have the courage to stand up and have the abuser arrested.
My heart goes out to the Kelley family, but it goes out to them not because everyone now knows “the secret”, but rather because of everything they have gone through.
Beverly , I know this family and have know them for a very long time but i also know a family that had to lay their daughter and my best friend to rest because of a “Domestic Violence Incident”. It should be made public ! I feel for the families of all involved . But keeping it quite only makes it worse ! Maybe Mr. Kelley will read this and realize what he has done to ALL his family and finally get the help he really needs !!!!

to sonia and any other commenters on this particular domestic violence incident. just because there is freedom of the press does not mean everything is everybody’s right to know or to be involved. if any of you feel it is your business to continue commenting then you should take the time to get to know this family and offer them words of encouragement and compassion. your insensitive comments make you an abuser of this family as much as the abuser himself. take some time to consider your words today and decide if you are helping or hurting others. consider if you would like your life or the life of your family to be made public. go find someone in need and use your energy on helping them instead of offering your ignorant and inconsiderate opinions on this website.
I dont believe the last name of who you are will omit the crime that was commited here. Domestic violence is a terrible thing and anyone that has commited such a crime, no matter who you are, should not have the luxury to hide. But, my heart does go out to the family that this happened to, especially during the holiday season.
Sarah, as far as this not being anyone’s business and the news should not be made public it is time that DOMESTIC VIOLENCE STOP BEING THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. When everyone keeps it a secret and pretends it isn’t happening you are enabling the abuser and also putting those who are being abused in harms way. No man, woman, or child should tolerate domestic violence, or violence toward themselves of any sort. I for one am glad the newspaper has printed this, as perhaps now that everyone knows something will be done for I assure you that this was not an isolated incident. There is a shelter for women who are afraid for their lives and need assistance in getting away from an abuser. There was a time when the woman was always blamed for whatever happened, but thankfully that time no longer exists. We’ve come a long way in this area, but obviously need to come even further when you are of the belief it should be kept quiet. Mental illness is the same way, and if you ask me a normaly healthy mentally balanced individual does not abuse others.

I think that this story needs to be taken off for the Kelley family. Not only is it their business and no one else, but if they wanted someone to know, they would say. I understand about the cow getting hit and being ‘news’, but the rest is private. I’m sure if you were in their situation, you would feel the same way, especially around this time of year and all the stress. Please pray for the family that things can get better.

OMG..this is so sad, (about the cow) but more sad about the Kelley incident, especially this time of year. I am hoping and praying that things get better for you all. I know these people and this is so sad.
