Widened Highway 113 Opens, Joint Alabama And Florida Project
November 12, 2008
The ribbon was cut this morning to open the newly widen Highway 113 from Flomaton to I-65.
Alabama Gov. Bob Riley and a host of dignitaries from both Alabama and Florida were on hand for the ceremony this morning.
Riley said the widened highway will provide not only only a hurricane evacuation route, but also a shot in the arm for economic development for communities on both sides of the Alabama-Florida border.
NorthEscambia.com will have complete coverage Thursday morning, with comments from state and local leaders, and a complete photo gallery.
The four lanes on Alabama Highway 113 from Flomaton, Alabama, to I-65 provides a four lane hurricane evacuation route from Highway 29 in Pensacola and North Escambia all the way to the interstate.
The 14 mile widening project broke ground on September 11, 2007. Escambia County, Florida, contributed $4 million to the project. Flomaton and Escambia County, Alabama, each contributed $500,000 with the state of Alabama and the federal government picking up of the rest of the nearly $23 million tab.

I sure hope the economic shot in the arm comes shortly.I can’t remember when sales have been so slow in my shop.I am not too sure I will be able to hold out for very much longer. People are hesitant to spend money and those that have some to spend are running to the Walmarts and malls to get the same old stuff.I am proud that the highway is finished and in a timely manner and I certainly hope our area will see some growth in something besides drugs.
