A 21-year old Walnut Hill man was critically injured in a single vehicle accident Thanksgiving night.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Jarod Evan Jones, 21, was ejected from his GMC Sierra pickup on Highway 97A near Walnut Hill about 9:00 Thursday night.

The pickup left Highway 97A, hit a culvert at Corley Road and rolled multiple times over a distance of almost a tenth of a mile in the ditch alongside Highway 97A. Speed was an apparent factor in the accident.

Jones was transported by LifeFlight to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola in critical condition.

The accident is still under investigation by the FHP. The Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Atmore Fire Department and Atmore Ambulance responded to the call.

    Hi,
i hope that Jarod is alright. my sister Brittany Tutton was the first one on the scene of the accident. she checked his pulse to see if he was was still breathing!
when she and her friend Clint got there the truck was still smoking and Jarod was in the ditch knocked out. soon after she got there Jarod stopped breathing. as soon as she knew that he stopped breathing James Hare a volunteer fire fighter showed up with his tool kit and him and Brittany got Jarod breathing again! then life flight landed and took him away. My sister is in the Bright orange shirt in the 4th picture…. also my sister and him were close friends all throughout school her Jarod and Cord Cook were inseperable.
thanks and i have prayed for all of jarods family and jarod since it happed i hope that he is okay

Has anybody heard how Jarod is doing? I pray for him every day even though I don’t know the man. We live close to the scene of the accident and saw the events unfold.

    KJ—

The story does not say that he died. It says he was critically injured. That means very seriously injured. The person “PK” that commented made that mistake, but the story does not say that he died. I hope your cousin is doing as well as possible.

I have worked many accident scenes in my carrer and can easily see when powers much higher than humans have a hand in someones survival. This is such an accident. I have known this young man for a long time and have watched him grow up with my children. My prayers go out to him and his family. God Bless you all !!

The article states that speed was an “apparent” factor , lets not jump to conclusions on this young man’s driving habits until all the facts are out. To his family, I hope he comes out of this OK.

Until drivers begin to assume responsibilities for their own safety behind the wheel, there will continue to be drivers who drive and act reckless, putting innocent people at risk.
We (the government) cannot continue to try to protect us from ourselves. It is plain and simple SPEED KILLS.There are not enough law enforcement to monitor every reckless driver or dangerous highway. When we get a driver’s license we assume that responsibility(or at least that is the way it is supposed to be).
Sadly it sometimes takes something like this accident as a wake up call to those who think they are invincible.
Maybe that is an answer…have the survivor of an accident caused by reckless driving to go to the schools to do a program on responsibility to the young people before they start driving
The good part? the driver was not killed and neither was anyone else.
The bad part? rehab will be long lasting and a very slow progress. Financially it will cost the driver quite a bit.

He was CRITICALLY injured. He was not killed.

What could possibly be done to stop this until people decide to stop being stupid and obey driving rules. WE all should have learned not to pass on solid lines and that we should abide by speed limits. Its sad that people go crazy on that road and many others. My deepest sympathy to the family of the young man that lost his life.

How many more before something is done, Hwy 97 is a death trap, I live on 97 in there is not a day that goes by I see cars passing on double lines, speeding around cars or school buses doing the speed limit, or passing on hills. I hope that when driving you see this, that you pull over and call 911 to report the speeder. This could prevent someone you know or love from getting hurt if not killed by a speeder on Hwy 97. I feel for this driver and his family and pray he is healed.

Hwy. 97 is becoming a death trap for area drivers. There has not been a time I have been on 97 when a driver is not only impatient but driving over the speed limit.; putting themselves and other law abiding citizens at a high risk. Luckly, the last two accidents didn’t involve any other car… how long is the luck going to hold? Something needs to be done but what?
