Garbage Bills To Increase

November 6, 2008

If you live in the Town of Century, your trash bill is headed up beginning next month.

Allied Waste, which picks up trash in Century under contract with the town, has informed the town that rates will go up 91 cents per residential customer. That will increase the month rate for residential trash service from $14.13 per month to $15.04 per month. It will be the first trash rate increase in about three years.

“They are not asking us; they are telling us,” Century Mayor Freddie McCall said, adding that the town’s franchise agreement with Allied Waste does allow for the increase without the town’s approval.

I say that the town sould bust the franchise agreement with Allied Waste and get out of the garbage collection business an turn it over to private enterprisers and the peoples garbage service charges will come down because of the competition.
Come on Town of Century – if you want to help the people, Do this. We may get a seperate bill each month or quarterly but it will probably be about 40% less than we are paying now. I know several towns that the monthly fee is less than $10.00 per month and they are more rural than Century. Also Century is over employed and over equipped. It seems that every employee has a truck or van to drive around and burning up a lot of expensive gas. The town even has a Office automobile sitting under a cover. Whats wrong with giving the Mayor a few dollars to buy gas when he has to attend a meeting somewhere. Century is just getting too big for its pants and not enough happens with the employees and equipment we have.
