Blog: Why We Did Not Cover Obama. Or McCain

November 16, 2008

“Why didn’t you cover Obama winning?” It’s a question, that frankly, I’m tired of hearing. It wasn’t local, plain and simple. Our email has been hit hard with that question for the past 12 days, and I’ve even had someone literally get up in my face with the question.

The answer is simple…it was not local news that Obama won. If McCain had won, we would not have had any coverage either. I will point out that we did have live election coverage on election night, and we did post a story with county numbers from all the races, including president.

“But you cover Jeff Miller, and he’s a U.S. senator” I’ve heard that one too this week. Sure, we cover Jeff Miller, our representative. Mr. Miller may be a federal official, but he does local things and appears locally in North Escambia. He reads this website for a feel of what is happening in his part of the district. He stands here in Escambia County and does things. He’ll return my call, and he’s likely to return your call if you have a real issue.

President-elect Obama and McCain are not likely to return my call, nor is it likely that they are like to return the call of NorthEscambia.com readers. They don’t set foot in Escambia County and do local things. If either candidate had visited this county, or even Escambia, Alabama, or Santa Rosa, we would have covered it here on NorthEscambia.com. Then it would have been a local story.

When Sarah Palin visited Escambia County, we had coverage. Click here to read that story from October 11. When Michelle Obama visited Escambia County, we had coverage. Click here to read that story from October 22.

We are a local news outlet; we are the most read news source in North Escambia. It’s an honor that we’ve earned from our readers by covering local news. From local schools to local government, we cover local things. Look at the top of every page on this site notice what it says at the top of the page: “Local News for Molino, Bratt,  McDavid, Century & Walnut Hill”. Those are the larger of the many communities in North Escambia. We off course cover things in Bogia, Barrineau Park, Oak Grove, Davisville, Gandyville and a long list of other communities in North Escambia too. We just could not fit all the community names at the top of the page.

Obama did nothing locally. McCain did nothing locally. As soon as one of them makes an appearance in this county or returns my call, we’ll cover it. Until then, they are not local news.

Keep up the good work. I check the local newa almost every day. I was born and raised in Molino, and like to keep up with what is going on. I now live in Conyer, Ga. Agin, keep up the good work…..

This is the BEST -==LOCAL==- news source around. I appreciate it and am glad that only local news and events are included in the content. It’s nice and refreshing not to have to wade through a ton of news I’m not particularly interested in at the moment.

Keep up the good work William! And THANK YOU!

(lol) You have got to be kidden me!

We have heard so much news, practically shoved down our throats, concerning the elections (Clinton, Obama and McCain) everywhere we turned around, that I could’ve pulled my hair out.
I agree with many others, it was refreshing to be able to come to this site to read about our local news, without having to scroll over any election news. Would’ve been a waste of space and time as far as I’m concerned!

To the people that got in William’s face over this issue…Shame on you and GET A LIFE!

do your home work, Obama has and continues to support banning the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic firearms, while he alone can not change or repeal the 2nd amendment to the Constitution he can impose a 500% tax on ammo, this has been reported by the Washington post as well as several other reliable national sources. find out for yourself, if you are reading this you know how to use a computer. do your home work, do not take my word, look it up. watch youtube videos of campaign speeches and his gun ban proposals, once again don’t take my word, listen to him. I would recommend you buy now in order to save yourself later. We have no idea what the next 4 years will bring. I hope for the best but expect the worst.
“You can do more with a kind word and a gun than with just a kind word” Al Capone
    need I say more?

I agree 100% on going out and purchasing your guns & ammo. That is definately not a statement to be calling anyone dumb over. The constitution of the USA says that we have the right to bare arms. That includes rednecks & city slickers just not crime commiters. Osama, i mean obama, has already said in numerous occasions his negative point of view on Amendment 2. I have the N.R.A. Magazine in the bathroom to prove all his points. If a president is willing to go against the constitution that our country was built on then maybe you should beware of what else he is capable of doing.

    ps…

Thank you north escambia for not covering the election. i love true local news.

Thank you for NOT covering the election. I am very sure that if anyone has’nt heard, Obama won, and open any newspaper, turn on any radio and you will get an minute by minute replay of any and every thing he has done.
Enough! Thank you, again for NOT covering the election. Just stand still and pray for each other.
    Your doing a great job..

    GET A GRIP PEOPLE!

I agree. I like this site for the local and I might add, unbiased news. Thanks to this site, I found out about the book sale in McDavid and purchased a lot of new reading material. I don’t subscribe to the P’cola paper, because most of it doesn’t interest me or let me know what is going on locally. The “local” TV channels don’t provide this service, either. Thanks, William for your dedication to North Escambia county and continue the good work.

  13. T on November 16th, 2008 3:09 pm

Go buy guns?? Are you kidding me. That’s the biggest worry that we should have, that we will not be able to buy guns. That’s why people think that we are dumb on the end of the county because people like that open up their mouths and prove them right.

  14. Al on November 16th, 2008 12:35 pm

I want to gag everytime somebody mentiones EITHER of the presidential candidates, or the previous campaigns. We drown in presidential murk…. thank you for news relevant to North Escambia and surrounding areas. I come to your site for straightforward news…. the other sites for fluff and entertainment and nausea.

  15. JF on November 16th, 2008 9:37 am

Not sure that Mr. Miller has reached senatorial status yet, although he would make good one compared to the two we have now.

  16. EDDIE on November 16th, 2008 9:21 am

    Amen

  17. Cindy on November 16th, 2008 8:33 am

I come to this site every morning for LOCAL news. I have no problem hearing about McCain, Obama and other state and national news on every channel on tv and reading about them in every other newspaper, most of it biased. While I do care about the rest of the news, this is the ONLY place I can find out what is going on right outside MY frontdoor. If people want to read about Obama and McCain they can pick-up a news-journal and get all of it they can stand. I love this site just the way it is. You do a wonderful job of reporting what is happening in the community….keep it up!

  18. AMEN!!! on November 16th, 2008 7:40 am

    AMEN!!! :0)

  19. C on November 16th, 2008 7:36 am

    I agree!

  20. Lawson on November 16th, 2008 6:32 am

We’ll just have to get used to criticism for not doing everything we can to promote “The Annointed One”. You would think now that folks would get over the “victim” mentality. Sad.

  21. Medicine Man on November 16th, 2008 1:18 am

This area didn’t vote for Osama Obama anyway, so who cared if he won, except the liberals who are still trying to shove him down our throats. It is worrisome to know we have people living in our area who actually believe this guy. He has already issued several disclaimers to his campaign promises already. There is just no way to be everything to everybody. My recommendation to everyone is to go and buy your guns and ammo now, before he has the chance to enact his new policies to eihter take away our guns all together, or tax them so much that we can’t afford them. Remember he still has to fund Universal Health Care.
