Exclusive: A Look At Project Green Leaf’s Electric Car That Might Be Produced In Century
October 17, 2008
As an electric car company looks to possibly bring 1,100 jobs to Century over the next five years, NorthEscambia.com has learned more about what the vehicle may possibly be like.
Here’s what NorthEscambia.com has learned so far about the car:
- It looks similar to a Willys Jeep (think MASH tv show or any World War II movie jeep)
- A single charge is good for about 60 miles
- Top speed is around 50 mph
- It’s four wheel drive; each wheel has its own independent electric motor
- Air conditioning is an available option
- Its batteries would charge by plugging into a charging unit
- Parts would be made in France and assembled in Century
- Similar vehicles in France sell for $13,500 to $20,000 (U.S. dollars)
- The French version is built with a stainless steel frame and aluminum body
- The lead acid batteries can be charged in three to six hours, depending on configuration
Here’s what we know about the company behind “Project Green Leaf” that plans to produce the vehicle:
- Principal owners are Nash and Jay Patel.
- The Patels own LHS Companies in Pensacola. The company operates several hotels in Pensacola and Gulf Shores, including a Howard Johnson, Days Inn, Ramada, Travel Lodge and Comfort Inn.
- “LHS Companies also owns LHS EZ-Concept, which is trading goods and services within the Hospitality Industry. Their additional companies known as LHS EV (Europe and USA) are involved in the infrastructure of EV Plugs across the US and are the manufacturers for the Electric cars,” according to the Asian American Hotel Owners Association.
- LHS EZ-Concept is also involved in the trade of LCD televisions for unsold hotel rooms across the country, according to the company’s web site.

Pictured above and left: While we can’t be exactly sure what the electric car that might be produced in Century will look like, this is a similar model currently being produced in France that our sources tell us is very much like the car planned by Project Green Leaf. If this electric vehicle (EV) passes federal crash testing, it should sell. About 30 other companies will be selling battery EVs by the time that it hits the market, however; if it’s priced below $20,000, it may sell well against more-powerful but higher-priced EVs equipped with nickel metal hydride or lithium batteries.
As an EV builder, daily driver for 12 yrs, this EV may sell some but not as many as they think.
At 55mph the aero is so bad range will probably be well under 25 miles.
It’s going to have to pass Fed DOT which for 4 wheels over 500 units costs about $10m just for lawyers/paperwork. I don’t think it can pass as it is.
A better, faster, longer range, safer one can be done in composites for less money to build while getting a good price and cost much less to start up.
I’m working on a 2 seat 3wh sport wagon with the 2 wheels in the front with 100+ mile range on lead batteries and a 80mph top speed sportscar. Such an EV will sell much more units with it’s enclosed body than an open jeep type could. Easily 50k/.yr for commuters, retirees, ect. At the cost equivilent of 400mpg vs the jeeps 100mpg at 55mph, short range because of it’s bad aero. As a MC, it easily passes FedDOT.
EV’s are the future but better designs will be needed than the jeep style.
Li-ion is still not ready for prime time but will be ready in a yr or 2. at a reasonable price. 100 mile range in my EV is about $7500 now vs in the jeep style, about $20-30k. But by the time your first lead pack dies in 4-7 yrs, li-ion will be about the same cost as lead.
Yahoo EV Clubs, EVDL Photo Album, EV racing, Plasmaboyracing, Killacycle for good info and links from those who actually drive EV’s every day.

I’m surprised that at that price, they aren’t going to be using a more powerful battery, like NiMH, lithium ion, or lithium iron phosphate. It would add a couple of thousand to the price, but greatly extend the range and reduce weight.
What’s the target market? This vehicle does not look like it could be registered for highway use. Yes, it’s electric, but efficient – hardly.
What is the grille for? Luckily they knew better than to make it 7 slots or Jeep (or now Hummer?) might have gone after this Jeep clone for copyright infringement. It sounds like it is in the range and capacity of current electric car technology, which unfortunately, limits its usefulness. No one in Century will drive to downtown Pensacola and back, not with the top speed or the range. It would have been more interesting if the manufacturer had chosen to do an exterior design that reflects its mode of power instead of mimicking a traditional gas powered vehicle.
Design criticism aside, hopefully it’ll make it to market, for these initial production models are more test vehicles for what the market will accept and how well they will do in reliability and operation.
Looks great, but what happens when it rains?
looks great! Put some larger wheels on it for better off road traction…maybe a great sell to the beach crowd or the police for beach patrol…Need to clean it up so it looks more finished for road use.
Sounds like a great opportunity for the Town of Century!
